$4 Million! New System, New Ship, New Goals!

FOUR MILLION DOLLARS! We’ve DOUBLED the original goal and unlocked a LOT of stretch goals. Here’s what you just earned: increased community updates, professional mod tools FREE for players and monthly webcasts from the team. Squadron 42 will feature a richer storyline with 45 missions (more than Wing Commander I!) Star Citizen will feature a persistent universe on launch along with an additional flyable ship, the Drake Cutlass (detailed below.) The game will launch with FIFTY star systems and will feature ENHANCED boarding options (including melee weapons, upgradeable HUDs, zero-g external combat.)

Read on to see the details of our final $100K Challenge star system, Chronos… it’s an important one and you’ll be glad you unlocked it when you learn more about the Star Citizen universe! Our next target is $4.5 million, at which you will unlock 60 star systems and the largest playable ship will be massive armored cruisers! In addition, getting to $4.5 million combined will unlock all of the remaining Kickstarter goals.

If we can make it to $5 million, there’ll be a companion app, even more community updates and webcasts and a monthly town hall meeting with Chris Roberts! Squadron 42 will add celebrity voice actors and have a total of fifty missions… and Star Citizen will match the original Privateer and feature 70 star systems! Finally, a new base type will be added: alien derelicts.

UEE Strategic Value: Red

Site of the infamous Synthworld Project. Chosen because it’s a sparse, vast, empty system. The planets Chronos I & II are dead worlds on an orbit very close to their sun. An ELE destroyed the planets on the outer half of the system, offering the perfect opportunity to design the Synthworld’s distance and orbit from the sun for optimal planetary conditions.

When the project began, there was a lot of traffic in and out of the system, but now, money and enthusiasm has waned. Deemed by some as an embarrassment, a financial vampire by others, the Synthworld stands as a half-constructed monstrosity that most doubt will ever be completed. The government is still struggling to make the project a success.

Though its star has fallen, the SynthWorld Project is still an excellent place for traders to offload raw materials. With the proper bribes, contractors can bring in heavy metals, construction equipment and shipped labor to be sold at inflated government prices. Those who live outside the law should be wary: there may be no place in the galaxy worse for conducting illegal business. The UEE’s elite 18th Battle Fleet is on permanent station at Chronos and have spent years with little to do aside from practice their aim.

Drake Cutlass

Builder: Drake Interplanetary
Crew (max): 2
Mass (empty): 35,000 Kg
Focus: “System Defense” (Piracy)

Drake Interplanetary claims that the Cutlass is a low-cost, easy-to-maintain solution for local in-system militia units. The larger-than-average cargo hold, RIO seat and dedicated tractor mount are, the company literature insists, for facilitating search and rescue operations. While it’s true that Cutlasses are used throughout known space for such missions, their prime task and immediate association is with high space piracy. Cutlasses, often operating in groups, menace distant transit lanes to prey on hapless merchants. A single Cutlass can ravage a mid-sized transport and a pack operating as a clan can easily take down larger prey. STOL adaptations allow these interceptors to operate off of modified transports or pocket destroyers; the most common warships that make up pirate caravans.

Designer note: the idea is that Drake Interplanetary builds ships which are ostensibly for legal purposes (local militias, etc.) but are ‘obviously’ for pirates: so it has the appearance of a military fighter, but mated to an awkwardly larger hull for collecting loot; it should have visible forward-facing tractor beams and a seat for a second crewman even though there’s no turret (as you’ll need a second man to board an enemy ship.) It also has a cheaper build quality: if Anvil is building Jeeps and Origin is building BMWs, this is a Honda.

  35. Avatar of starduke starduke says:

Hmm, I kinda feel sorry for people who get this game when it comes out, and don’t get in on the crowd funding, and the alpha and beta. Since this game is skill based, there’s gonna be a lot of veteran Star Citizen players, who played the alpha and beta, when the game officially comes out. So, someone just starting out will probably have a hard time, unless there’s a skill matching feature. Yet another reason to get in on it now, I guess.

    • Avatar of reigner reigner says:

      think of it this way:
skilled players from the alpha/beta will inhabit the far reaches of space while new people stay in the more developed and safer areas until they feel comfortable (or daring) enough to venture out. those same players will follow the origin trail (see what i did there) and go to the places where the skilled players were, while the skilled players go further. the whole flow of the game will be like ripples in water. the first people are generally going to be further from the centre while new players will be closer until they skill up and venture outward. it sounds pretty good to me.

Incredible… Project Obsidian held the crowd funding record for like 10 days lol… this is a major major statement by PC gamers…. the so called ‘Platform of the Pirates’ has tens of thousands of players ready to pay for a product 2 years before they get it… Just a bit of mis-calculation huh big devs/pubs?

    Nice Job All!!!!!

  50. Avatar of Pesky Pesky says:

I bought my first PC, the 386 DX20, I got the 1Meg of ram instead of the 640K, and a 20Mb HD, plus a Sony 13″ SVGA. $5000 for the lot!
I walked into a software store (Egghead software, if I remember correctly) and asked what game would be worthy of my state of the art system. The clerk handed me Wing Commander! I had a tough time with it, and, unknowingly, went down a path of ‘no return’. I thought, crap! I can’t play this game – It’s way to hard for me.
I ditched the game for a while, then found a cheat. The cheat enabled me to finish that path and return me to the story. I immediately realized I had lost too many earlier battles, and, instead of trying again, continued down the (game) selected path.
I then ditched the cheat and started WC from the beginning. And that is when there was no turning back. It gave me endless hours of entertainment, and I bought all the others in the series, plus Privateer, which was the ultimate game for me. Never really reaching the same pleasure, I still played the sequels and, since I pledged, I am re-playing Freelancer, which, I must say, holds up really well!
So Chris, as a long time fan of your work, congratulations on this momentous achievement – $4,000,000!

  53. Avatar of Phekdra Phekdra says:

Please no celebrity voice actors – don’t just pour my money away.

  54. Avatar of Advil Advil says:

Gotta agree. Never thought we’d make it this far in funding.

I’d rather see another MAJOR piece of game mechanics to push the envelope than have celeb voice actors. Quality voice actors sure, but celebs only if they want in for a reasonable fee.

It’s icing on the cake, sure, but I don’t care who it is if the talent is there.

    Now lets get to 4.5!

  55. Avatar of Journeyman Journeyman says:

This ain’t over yet pilots! The world record is in sight; it isn’t enough to break it – we need to obliterate it! Let’s show them publishing pussycats what we can do! :-D

Congrats RSI team for the already more than successfull fundraising with exeptinoal coverage and update rate! In 59 hours and a half you will finally be able to go to sleep! But for now: go for 5 millions. In 11 hours, the reminder on kickstarter will go off. Ready to set the new “unreachable” record for crowdfunding in 30 days? Go for it guys!

Please, please, consider putting the whole site in read-only(frames from backup site) except for the pledging part, just so you can get as much as possible.

  58. Avatar of Goltha Goltha says:

Grats all on reaching this goal. I’ve been waiting for space sim resurrection for quite some time, and that hour has finally came. Fingers crossed for development to reach set goals.

The designer’s note on the ship design made me laugh really good.

  61. Avatar of Lukhar Lukhar says:

  65. Avatar of Frank Frank says:

Yeeeehaaa! 4 Million! Now it will be fully the game I was hoping for. The Track-IR at 4.5 Million would be nice because I built myself a Freetrack for Falcon BMS. But I wouldn’t mind if it would not be in there from the beginning. Or I buy a Oculus Rift ;D

  66. Avatar of Metzi1980 Metzi1980 says:

I’m just woked up and see that we’ve got the 4 million!
    Congratulation!
Lots of us played Wing Commander in their childhood and I’m one of them. Star Citizen is like a dream come true and it will be a great game. I thank you all for your support.

    Greetings from Germany

  67. Avatar of Xpo3 Xpo3 says:

Meh, the game probably won’t be that good anyway. Just kidding :-P . Im super excited, i’ve never been a part of a crowd funding project before but my love for space sims earlier on in my childhood couldn’t resist. Cool beans.

  68. Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

Yesterday evening we were near to USD 3.9 million. Today I have woken up and the first thing I have done is to check the figures: what the hell, exceeding USD 4.1 million. These last hours will be a hell!!! WERE ARE THOSE WINGMEN? We got to score al least the 4.5 USD million! :) 60.000 people cannot be wrong! A big kick ass to all those game companies ignoring PC gamers and specially space-sim fans! WE GOT WHAT WE WANT! :) I am starting to save for upgrading to a high-end PC, what the hell.

  69. Avatar of Mike-o2 Mike-o2 says:

Over 4M$! Now EA, Lucasarts, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Atari and others: PAY GODDAMN ATTENTION! This is how it’s done! Offer good Quality PC gaming and you shall receive.

  70. Avatar of Zmeils Zmeils says:

    Hey guys,

i’m so happy to see this project grow and all this damn hot features but i’m afraid if you try to deliver all this features and we need to play the first months a bugparty. I hope you take all the time you need to finish the game with all this cool stuff until it’s run great.

What a GREAT way to wake up!! MOD TOOLS!!

Thank you for reigniting my personal muse.

Now to buy that new tablet/pen for working up my modular ship class and vertical space parking lot and battlecruiser!

    Vertical ships, best ships.

  72. Avatar of rattpunk rattpunk says:

After reading about the last two ships, the M50 and Drake Cutlass, I really want a drake built Interceptor/Racer. It would be a fast ship, ostensibly for the budget racer, but would also make a great harassment fighter. Something to tear away at better ships to divert attention from the battle ships or haulers. A small group would be hell to fend off.

Must have pillion hard point for missiles.
and be quick, wicked quick :)

    oh, and Congrats!

  75. Avatar of Blues Blues says:

By my calculation if the pledges keep at the rate of the last 16 hours the total by the bell ring should be somewhere in around 5,005,000 and 5.010,000 not including a last 6 hour flurry.

  76. Avatar of Fosty99 Fosty99 says:

How much will celebrity voice actors cost?

  77. Avatar of DarkDissent DarkDissent says:

Quick Question on the Black Citizenship Card. Is Space Marshal a Military rank or Law Enforcement title? I think it would be cooler to be a law enforcement title as there are already plenty of military titles in the game. Space Marshals could be the analogues to the U.S. Marshals, agents of the Advocacy who hunt down the UEE’s most wanted criminals. This would be a natural evolution for the Bounty Hunter role and it makes sense to unveil it along with the cutlass as that is a common ship a Space Marshal would be tangling with. Any information on this would be appreciated.
