hornetblastoff

Hello everyone!

Less than two weeks ago, I reached out to the gaming community to help me prove that the PC game wasn’t dead. That there was still an audience for the kind of games I created with Wing Commander and Freelancer. To prove that Space Combat wasn’t finished as a genre

I hoped that the answer would be yes, that the demand would be there and that it would come together in a way that would ultimately let me build the world I have been dreaming about for many years.

What I didn’t expect was how quickly it all happened.

Last night, just four and half days after our Kickstarter campaign launched, we passed the $500,000 mark, making it successfully funded, and another Kickstarter success story.

As I write this we are less than $50,000 from reaching the RSI goal of $2 million in overall pledges that makes Star Citizen a “go”. It’s unbelievable.

I’m proud to represent this cause and I’m tremendously humbled by the incredible community that has rallied to my side. Not just the donations–which have been astounding –but also the stories and the creativity I’ve encountered interacting with you in the comments and on the message boards and elsewhere. Like me, you have all seen Star Citizen, no matter what you may have called it, in your head for many years… and thanks to your collected efforts; I’m going to build it for you.

I have two pieces of information to share with you tonight. The first is the long-awaited design document about Star Citizens five pledge ships. Time and time again you’ve asked what an Aurora or a Hornet or a Constellation is. I’m happy now to be able to share our design concepts. These are the specifications we’re building on as we create the game world and they’re the descriptions I have sent to the artists who are putting together the ship models. Normally you wouldn’t see this kind of inside information, especially not this early, but I hope you will find it interesting and get a kick out of getting an insider’s view of how game development works.

The second piece of news is the news that you can finally upgrade your pledges at RobertsSpaceIndustries.com. If you’ve decided you would like to upgrade to a higher tier of ship or if you would like to increase your support for the project for any other reason, you now have that option. In addition we have heard you loud and clear on the Forums, on Kickstarter, Facebook and on the recent poll. You want the ability to add additional ships to your base package. So we’ve given you that option too. I hope you’ll enjoy seeing our plans for these ships and then choosing the one that best fits how you want to play the game.

Tomorrow, we’re going to be adding additional information about stretch goals… more specific levels and in-game rewards that you can achieve. In the near future we will have the upgraded forums online and we will start opening additional content at the RSI website. There’s a lot to look forward to!

So, pilots: we’ve won our first furball! But, there’s plenty more work to do. Let’s knock out the $2M in overall pledges that green lights Star Citizen, then set our sights on the stretch goals. The more of these we can hit, the richer and more varied the game I can deliver. We’re less than half way through the campaign, so I know we can go much further. If you’ve already backed, spread the word. If you’re still waiting to, then please join the cause.

Thank you, truly, for your unbelievable support. We have $45,840 to go! We can get there by MORNING!

Chris Roberts

Thanks of the ship stats and additional information. 1 question on pledge ships though. The $35 and $40 pledge packs are exactly the same… is there a difference on the default ship loadout. If so I assume since one is a scout title and the other a merc title then it is a weapon difference or something?

    • Avatar of OneShot OneShot says:

I believe the reason there are multiple tiers of pledges with the same items is to reward those who backed the project earlier. Early bird gets the worm sort of deal.

      • OneShot is correct. See the $30 level Sold Out? That $35 will sell out too, leaving just the $40. Those that have backed the $40 already simply wanted to throw a little more money into the pot of Star Citizen being a reality.

        • Avatar of Mcy D Mcy D says:

That could be, but the $30 and $35 have the same title: Scout, whereas the $40 gives you a different title:Merc. Was figuring it was a differnt loadout on the ship. However, the naming of the tiers does support the difference. Also I noticed that the $30 tier is no longer sold out, 1 left, I wonder if when you upgrade a pledge to a higher one, it releases the old one.

  16. Hoooraaay!!

    ПОЕХАЛИ! (c) Juri Gagarin

I backed 250 now i’m gonna do that again splitted by 125 – wanna ALL those ships lol

  17. Also – thank you so much Chris for sharing actual concept-building information with the community!

That’s the exceptional and very appreciated

Frankly speaking, all devs should have this trust in the fans

    Thank you for this

  18. What an awesome update, thanks Chris! The new ship info you posted gives us plenty to dream about while we wait to get some seat time in these beasts!
One suggestion: since there seems to be a bit of confusion in the forums, you may want to post some simple information on how the upgrade system works so you can alleviate any concerns people might have about being billed more than they bargained for.

“Anyone can tell you which their favorite gun loadout in Wing Commander I or II was (and it will be different for each person) whereas few can tell you which guns the ships in Wing Commander III forward even had.”

oh, ho, HO. Is that a *challenge*? ;)

    • Avatar of Jumper Jumper says:

The white lasers on the Excalibur were my favorite. I just wish I could remember what the name of the guns were. Meanwhile, I can tell you that the laser cannons and neutron guns of the Rapier were probably my favorite load out due to their versatility, followed closely by the Raptor’s Mass Drivers and Neutron guns for their close range stomping ability.
At least in my case, he’s correct. You’ve put a lot of thought into this, Mr. Roberts. You have made this one cynical, slightly bitter gamer very excited, and I thank you very much for that.

      • Avatar of Toast Toast says:

The Excal’s white cannons are Tachyon guns :) The other two are Reaper cannons – very good stats, but when you have 4 Tachs, not much else matters.

        Raptor’s gun suite: Legendary

      • Avatar of Toast Toast says:

WC4 onward, the Excel loses its Reapers and gets regular Ion Cannons instead.

Very good news, Thanks a lot Chris.

The “Work in Progress”-Status is self-explanatory. I think, it would be a very hard work for a good balancing of all ships (incl. all upgrade-possibilities). I know the problem for Flightsims ala IL2 Sturmovik and others and you have no real existing datas from aircrafts like Spitfire, Hurricane or Messerschmitt. I dont’t know … perhaps its a advantage or disadvantage.

    Sorry for may bad english.

Here’s to one of the largest teams EVER! Here here and cheers! Heck, no matter what happens, these last few weeks were awesome already! Thanks everyone!

Chris & Team, thank you for working so hard to pull together the preliminary ship information! You did a great job.

Even though these early specifications may change due to balancing, the realities of the development process, etc., I found the information very useful in better understanding the relative differences in the ships and their intended roles & capabilities. What you’ve provided has a lot more detail & depth than I was expecting, and it was a pleasure to read through it.

Armed with the new information, it was only a matter of minutes before I made use of the upgrade feature on the RSI site to bump up my original pledge and to pledge for a second package (an incremental $250 in total).

Thanks for your continued efforts and commitment to providing a steady stream of information about the project. It’s much appreciated.

  35. hello. i pledged 3 times. 35$/60$/35$ is it possible to merge those 3 together to one?

  36. Avatar of Net Net says:

I am quite curious what additional contribution “$-140″ means…
I wanted to upgrade Come Fly With Me with Freelancer add-on ship but I have this “Payment Error Invalid amount. Amount must be a positive integer in cents.”
I know that 110-250=-140. But I do not want to “downgrade” to only one ship. I want the game as well.

  37. Avatar of Whiskerz Whiskerz says:

Thanks for that update, was really looking forward to it :-)

  38. Avatar of Spiro Spiro says:

Net: You cant upgrade to an extra ship. To get an extra ship you have to do that with the Beam me up button

  39. Avatar of MattiasS MattiasS says:

I went crazy and upgraded my pledge to come fly with me. Gotta have that ship :) Ive never spent this much on one game so it better be worth it.

  40. Avatar of Tiger Tiger says:

I think the upgrade system is somewhat strange.
I have actual the “come fly with me package” (250 $).
If I want to add the Hornet I have to add 110 $.

But If I instead pledge additional 125 $ an add the “wingnut” tier to my exisiting “come fly with me package” I pay only 15 $ more but I additional receive:
    - additional copy of the game
    - Squadron 42 Manual.

    My proposal:
    - The cost for adding another ship should be loss OR
    - at least the hardback bound manual of the respective ship package should be included If I spend so much money
Example: If I pay additional 110$ to get the Hornet I receive in addition the Squadron 42 Manual

    • Avatar of Tiger Tiger says:

      amendment:
A option to buy the different manuals (squadron 42, making of, mooding) would be nice. ;)

    • Avatar of Grayzzur Grayzzur says:

I agree. It seems a bit high for the ship add-ons.

It looks like you’re valuing the digital Hornet in-game ship at 110, while the rest of the package… the game itself, 5,000 credits, the USB key, the CD, the map, the book and the citizenship card is all only worth 15. I understand that buying something a la carte is a little more than getting it in a package, but this is quite lopsided.

I’m a little disappointed. I’d love to add the Hornet to sit next to my Freelancer in the hangar, but at that price point it’s most likely not happening.

      Still can’t wait!

  41. Avatar of Epistolarius Epistolarius says:

Oh my… please Chris, tell us that the Origin 300i ‘silver killer’ can be chrome-plated like the J-327! (You said something about custom skins, right?)
I’m really looking forward to this game – please make it happen, that we can fully customize our ships! That would be so awesome! \(^_^)/

    • Avatar of Stehlik Stehlik says:

Just thinking here… But once the game gets up and going, I’d imagine the popular (and successful) ‘go to’ game economy, is Team Fortress 2… Its not pay to win, but small transactions to personalize the game (but not alter balance) make the money…. TF2 players are extremely happy with it, and have a long time dedicated following.
Point is, the customization would be possible in game at no cost, but much more easier to achieve by a small purchase…
It benefits RSI to make this possible for you…

  47. Avatar of RedTom RedTom says:

After reading the specs of ship i have to say i don’t know which ship i really want :D , which is great. I want to play a mix, exploration (oh yeah!), a little smuggling, little dogfighting, little trading, but i don’t want a ship that’s to big and to heavy (i also play mainly solo – so no constelation). So i don’t think i want a hornet – it’s straight out of the box killer machine with little cargo. I just hope that Freelancer can be upgraded so it can hold it’s own in a dogfight with bloody pirates ;-) .

It also means that the concept behing ships is well thought through – there isn’t one THE best for everything ship, which is great!
Every has it’s pros and cons and with a well made upgrade system people will make ships that suit their style.

So to begin – for now i will probably up my pledge to origin 300i (a see what comes later in the game)

Well made Chris! Happy to be a part of this game!

    • Avatar of RedTom RedTom says:

I just read the ship design documents and found that freelancer have 4x class 2(” they allow guns to rotate on an arc rather than fire point blank”) hardpoints, and hornet 2xclass1(shoting just straight) and 2xclass2, which means the lancer don’t have to be so agile to score a hit ;-) . For me that makes him better and better.

  48. Avatar of Hood Hood says:

You should really link the ships specs page more promenently.
It should be right at the top of the Kickstarter text (as an Update) and a link to the corresponding description of the ship in the different pledge levels.
This would help people to find the documents so that they don’t have to ask.

  49. Avatar of Sepgod Sepgod says:

this is realy the type of game i am hungering for since i played Wing commander Privateer…. and Freelancer!

    thank you for Building this!!!!

  50. Well, I haven’t pledged yet … simply because of one reason: I’m waiting for the end of the month when I’ll receive my wage. And as soon as I’ve got it, I’ll be going on quite a shopping tour in the shipyard.

I believe a lot of people out there are waiting for their wages as well, so I assume we’ll see quite a boost in pledges around the end of the month … which is even better for the developement of the game :-)

Thank you Chris and team for making this happen.

  53. Avatar of gorg_graggel gorg_graggel says:

Awesome! Just upgraded my pledge to Lancer.
I now have spent 125$ on rsi, 5$ on kickstarter and will have to pay 15$ for shipping. That’s 145$…Never have spent so much for single game. You made me do it! And it doesn’t even hurt to have done so… :D

Chris, you shall have my money at the end of the month but you already have my eternal gratitude for bringing my favourite genre back to life.

  64. The next 2 years are going to be a long wait… So annoying.

  65. Avatar of Retro Nick Retro Nick says:

My little Aurora is likened to a Y-Wing? SWEEEEEEEEET.

    • Keep in mind that it >>>likened<<< to be a Y-Wing! This means by it's speed, behavior, handling etc. The looks of the ship are propably totally different than a Y-Wing. I don't believe Chris wants to get into an intellectual property dispute with George Lucas ;-)

      • Avatar of Retro Nick Retro Nick says:

I mean the the word “likened” the same way you do. I don’t expect to look like a Y-Wing at all, but close in specs. I have logged tons of flight time in Y-Wing while playing the X-Wing series, so I am quite aware of what they can do. They get the job done. ;)

      • Personally, I was hoping for some idea as to the ship looks with this released information.

I am grateful for the amount of information contained in this update, I’ll take the time to read it fully later. I still don’t think I’ll be able to pick a ship with just this information… I’m very aesthetically focused, I tend to not like to use ‘stuff’ I don’t care for the looks of.

I do believe it’s been stated we’ll be able to upgrade our pledges at a later time, will that still be an option after the crowdfunding period has ended, so that I can pledge small now and upgrade to a ship after I’ve gotten to see how they look visually?

    • Avatar of Wh1pL@sh Wh1pL@sh says:

If SW: Ep IV is anything to go by, the Y-wing handles like a brick… But so does the tarsus, so maybe the comparison is accurate. :-)

      • Avatar of Retro Nick Retro Nick says:

They do handle like a brick, but I like them overall, within the context of the X-Wing series at least. (Sorry Chris Roberts, I’ll try to not talk too much about your biggest competition from the 90’s! But the Star Wars reference was generated from your end, so……..) I was not familiar with the other craft mentioned (I’ve only played Wing Commander 1-4, Yes I’m an older gamer), so I looked them up. The only one that worries me a bit is the Straith. It doesn’t sound too impressive.

  66. only waiting for my paycheck. let us reach the 3 mill mark.
thank you so much for the information and ship specs. you and your team have done very good job. hope much more people will hear of this project, so we reach the 5mill mark and much more at the end.

You are so right about having it the vision of this game in my head. I was really amazed at your presentation when almost everything i fantasized about how a wing commander reboot was in it. But you are even doing it all at once! I envisioned it as a Squadron 42 first to test out the audience and get a basic engine going and later having a Star Citizen MMO use it.

Okay, its not Wing Commander, but its all Chris Roberts! And it will look and feel the way it should, i am still all amazed that this finally happend. Thank you so much Chris!!!

Very impressive on the specs sheet. I love the upgrade options for the ships. I was a little worried about the Hornet as I’m most familiar with the WC1 version of it, but the specs on put those concerns to ease. That looks like one solid fighter.

Almost at the 2 mil mark? Congratulations to all of us! We did it!

  75. Very cool…The thing I picked up on the most in reading the ship specs is you have thought out how the persestant world is going to work.I was starting to get the feeling that it was just a byproduct of what might happen, but now I feel you guys have really planned out this world…..should have kept the faith :)

Fantastic writeup! I enjoyed reading the ship details, it got that “Privateer” feel to it.

  78. Avatar of Nicholas Nicholas says:

Talking about memorable guns, I really remember ripping apart pretty much any cats I came across in a WC2 Ferret. Something about the maneuverability of that little thing mixed with the punch of the mass drivers. Also, for whatever reason, you could rapid-fire them and unload your entire gun bank in about a second. That sudden burst of firepower was more than most kilrathi fighters could handle. And the gun bank recharged quickly, so by the time I had drawn a bead on the next Sartha or Jalkehi, I was ready with another knockout punch. A Grikath might keep me off of his tail, but that ship was so fast, no Kilrathi could lay their gunsights on me (as long as I was paying attention).

I was really glad that in the Unknown Enemy fanmod, that dynamic didn’t change. The Ferret was still as quick and deadly as ever.

I guessed more ppl will pledge now coz they dont have to fear a fail so much anymore. I wanted the normal white Citizen Card. So i went to the pledge area, everything was ok, i checked the other pledges wich i could do if i should pledge some more or not, decided to do my normal pledge for the white card, updated the page, white card plede sold out…..

I’ll wait now to pledge and hope there come some new cards to get.

Lets give ourselves a bit of credit – WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS! OF THE WOOOOORLD! *Queen*

  83. If, at any point, I had any doubts about the Constellation, this document put them to rest. That ship is going to be beefy and awesome. I’ll be able to trade -and- bounty hunt with it so well. I am so blipping excited to get my hands on it and start flying.

Chris, you and your team are epic, you have a real keeper in Ben Lesnick whom is doing a phenomenal job on the forums, and the future looks bright. Thank you for coming back to us.

I continue to trumpet the cause on Twitter and G+, I want to see how far we can go in the remaining days!

Anyone that says the PC is a dead/dying gaming platform should stick to console-pulp. They have dumbed down gaming so much to make it work on consoles true PC Gamers can’t stand to play most of the crap. They just don’t get why we don’t want to buy their lousy ports. PC Gamers have had and still expect better than that there are still a lot of insanely successful PC games they just don’t work on consoles. Hopefully this will be the next one.

  87. Mr. Roberts, after I’ve played Freelancer for quite a while I started to look for some new game to play (as FL was a little old back then, let alone now). I was disappointed to see there’s actually nothing like FL to play! Surely there were few titles created more or less at the same time but there was absolutely nothing to follow FL footprints.

For a while, there was the Jumpgate: Evolution which has been cancelled and so the hope to explore space died.

Now, for the first time in many years, my hopes to sit in a cockpit (and face the space and its vast sea of choices) are back!
My pay day is tomorrow so I can finally pledge and I don’t care RSI+KS have reached the goal – I want 2M to be reached here + 500k from KS :) And I’m sure I’m not the only one.

After seeing game’s details and community’s atmosphere, I can only quote:
“Shut up and take my money!”

Thank you for what you’ve done so far and for the possibility to be a part of new cosmic adventure!

Thanks Chris for coming back to gaming with your great vision and dream. It will show doubters their is life in the so called dead PC platform and space simulation. You are the Godfather of space simulation and created many extraordinary games in the past. Thanks for taking the torch for a games like Black Prophecy which just went down in flames. This game will triumph and be a masterpiece. Doubters of the PC platform and space sims genre will eat crow.

Well, what can I say? Mr Roberts, you are a testament to all those PC people like myself who year after year upgraded to the latest tech, in the hope that a project such as this would finally appear. Long have we waited for someone who not only understands what a PC Gamer is but where they came from. The platform has always pushed to the very boundaries of next gen technology but the software has not kept pace, often defaulting to primitive hardware in an effort to reach the masses. Let me be one of many when I congratulate you on your crowdfunding achievements but also salute you for what is (for me) a dream being made reality.

Quick question, if you donate on kickstarter does it link to your account on RSI for the option to upgrade ships as well? I went all the way through the kickstarter donate process till I had to pay and it never asked for any account info from RSI.

    • Avatar of Ironheart Ironheart says:

In the account page it says “- Your Kickstarter pledges will be linked to your RSI account when the Kickstarter drive is ended.” but I doubt that we can upgrade your pledge/ship after this entire event is over with.
