Metal Upgrades
We’ve had several requests in recent days to upgrade the bronze and silver level cards from plastic to metal. We’ve investigated this and it is possible for a limited fee - only if there is enough interest for a full production run and to cover manual labor cost of fulfillment. This would also create a delay in delivery date. As such, we’ve decided to poll the community. If you are expecting a bronze or silver card or you would upgrade for this, please fill in the poll. It does not matter if you have filled in the shipping form already or not.

I was also going to upgrade to gold just for metal, but decided to wait and see if silver was made metal first. Silver looks badass.

Actually I really really liked the green one, because it says Bounty Hunter and I think that’s the coolest title of them all. However my pledges gave me a gold one… A bit sad, but metal is nice too, so Vice Admiral it is… but Bounty Hunter would have been better :p

i spent a bit of money to get to the metal tier, but w/e its not something that would really bother me if CIG offered an upgrade to metal for a fee… more money towards the game in the end. and if its something ppl will pay for specifically instead of it being a small perk to a level then let them have it.

IMO this is probably not taking the devs away from the game the ppl that were able to be hired because of the subscribers could be handling this, as the sub money is paying for a much broader community involvement and insight.
All the more reason to subscribe!! If more people want this kind of stuff, then imagine what the customer support would be if everyone subscribed!
Yeah, it’s that doing its best all the time that worries me; sometimes the best course of action is actually to say “no”. I can’t help but think of the horribly skewed results some of the polls have resulted in (to the point of being statistically useless) and then CIG trying to make a decision based on just a few days of polling here. Hopefully, whoever is looking at the results of the poll knows how to correlate that data against the number of people who voted and other data sets on the backers, or this could end up rather messy.
Notably the recent on about the death system. Ambiguous poll question is… ambiguous. So many different meanings could be attributed to it, and the lack of a non-committal option leaves those who compulsively vote on polls left to skew the results. :/
hopefully for us, the subsciber money is used for serving this kind of stuff and not the pledge money.
not to mention you complaining about other people complaining is counterproductive, and divides the community. I am pretty sure that when Chris decided to make this game he knew he was going to have a lot of people whine about anything he does so if he can put up with it than so can everyone else. (Kind of like a silent support sort of thing).
I don’t see the problem either. Sure it’s annoying when people complain, but if it results in more funding for the game (I don’t mind paying a bit extra for something durable) then I don’t see how it adversely affects anyone.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video game company who has been so concerned with customer satisfaction. I can name a few that wouldn’t even bother. Serious bravo, CIG!

Thank you guys so much for this!!! I don’t think it was about people complaining about not getting it. Most of the threads that I saw asked if it would be possible for the opportunity to do so. They could have easily have said unfortunately no its not feasible. The fact that they are trying hard really shows how dedicated they are to the fans and that they really are listening to what we are saying.

not everyone could afford the metal one´s for some people the bronze or silver one were already as high as they could afford and so it is a nice offering to get a bit more

I’ll be fine with whatever they choose, but I upgraded from silver to gold (that’s an addition $250) so I could have a metal card. Under normal circumstances, this kind of thing would upset me, but I sincerely believe the extra $250 is supporting a good cause, regardless.
and by this kind of thing, I mean suddenly being told I could have potentially had a metal card if I stayed at silver all along. If I’m making a purchase, I like all the details to be out there so you can make an educated decision. As of now, any future purchases, I’m not really sure what is what as anything could change well after you have purchased it. Can we at least get a guarantee that CIG will not change purchase details after purchasing in future transactions?
You have a gold card, isnt that more worth than wether its plastic or metal? Besides, youve also got other stuff for your money, i dont know what youve spent your money for but usually you receive something for it (a ship, a tshirt, whatever). My name will be ingame because ive spent 120$ for a centurion annual. Besides i also get a gold metal card, thats nice and it also reminds me of what ive got for my money and how i supported the game.

Your insults aside, yes, I paid for it because I wanted a metal card. Chris Roberts is a childhood hero of mine that inspired me in many ways. I jumped at the opportunity to be able to support a modern game he is developing. I also really wanted to have a really cool memento, as well, so a metal card is indeed why I upgraded from Silver to Gold. Now, they might be possibly changing all of this. However, the other reason for me pledging so much STILL remains, in which it’s supporting Chris Roberts, so I will not be asking for a refund, but it does upset me a bit that I’m not able to trust future purchase decisions as I have learned that post-purchase, they can change everything. However, as I said, the extra money is for a good cause so I’ll retain my gold status. I believe in Chris Roberts.
At your Gold Level you are still getting everything you have pledged for.
I’m at Silver level, as $250 was really all I could afford & CiG has offered me and the Bronze level guys a little extra if we would like to opt in.

If the Dev was saying sorry, all those Gold metal cards will now be plastic I could understand being upset, but they haven’t, all they have done is offer a little extra for a big chunk of the SC population (Bronze & Silver).
If I had bought the GOLD level and my fellow Star Citizens were offered a little extra memento then I would say “Great, they’ll enjoy that, Nice, well done CIG for looking after your fans”.
I really hope that you didn’t double your pledge simple because you wanted metal instead of plastic. If that was truly the single deciding factor did you not ask the question before through the help button or the forums? a 250$ upgrade from plastic to metal seems a little intense, though if you have that kind of cash more power to you! I want this game to succeed just as much as the next citizen and every dollar counts.
There was no question to ask. It was stated that only gold and above would have metal. I took CIG’s word for it. They are now changing their word. Not much that I could do on my end to have avoided this. However, as I said, the other reason for bumping $250 is because I really do believe in this project, so my gold level shall remain true.

I don’t recall where I read it but it was from an official response. Also, I didn’t upgrade to gold until after the pledge drive. I was holding into silver for some time until I decided I’d really like a metal card to keep as a memento.
it was said before the ending of the crownfounding campaign. it was said that only high tier pledge will be metal. (titanium, black and platinium) later…gold is passed Metal becasue of hellp of some members of community who help to make it possible (they don’t whine or make pool to claim it)

The thing that bugs me is, if i understand well, everyone will have to wait his card longer to make this happen, so everyone is “paying” that little annoyance so the bronze-silver backers can get something they asked for precisely at the end of the card campaign. Sure it’s not a big deal, but the least we can say is that their timing could have been better.
I really hope CIG will make a good amount of money out of this so everyone can benefits from it in the end.

But once Final Deadline was announced a new bunch of folks (+some old ones maybe) made loud noises.
CIG try perhaps too hard to listen to us all and keep everyone happy, but here we are now.

I for one, along with several others i’m sure, asked the devs for the ability to upgrade to a metal card as soon as they posted that gold+ citizen cards would be metal.
I personally would have preferred if everyone got the option, but ideally if someone only spent $30 or $60 on the game, they would probably be less likely to want to spend more money on add-ons (although obviously people would be more inclined, since this is a physical reward rather than something like a skin)
Many didn’t know about the differences between cards. (most do not read the forum on a regular basis and depend on the updates for news)
And the first update mentioning the diffences was the last, so the reaction at this time is just natural…
for sure all Bronze + Silver people will want a metal card, even if they need to spill another $10

CIG, you’re simply awesome. I’ve never seen a developer go to such extreme lengths to try and please their customers. As far as customer service goes, your company is #1 in my books.
I just wish you’d set the price to 15 or 20 dollars to make some money on top of the production costs. Guess I’ll have to buy a few skins to make up for it.

Setting it at something alittle higher, $20 say, would raise more cash for the game, and ‘might’ even appease a part of the whiner crowd.
Unsure of the logistics, but perhaps worthwhile delaying the upgraded “metal card” release if you do it (and actually take some profit from it) for a little while, so that more of the community can hear about it, and thus pledge for metal cards – and thus more cash to RSI!
I voted for the upgrade option and if it’s available I will use it, but I may be spending enough between now and the Alpha cutoff to have gotten the gold card in all likelihood. But for the current situation I agree with others that say “if the option is there, I’ll use it… if not, not a big thing”. I don’t think anyone has complained about not getting a metal card, just asked if it was possible for an additional fee. Another way to generate some additional cash. I think it’s wonderful that CIG is listening to the supporters and wants to show excellent customer service, it’s truly an unusual thing for many software companies not just game companies. Would be nice to give the subscribers this for free – seems that they fund a lot of extra content, that quickly passes to the wider community, perhaps this is a tangible return? Someone at CIG must possess Long Range Telepathic Abilities..It wasn’t more than 5 minutes that passed filling the Ctzn Card shipping form & while i was doing that i said to my self on the inside,for a brief moment,”it would be awesome to have a Bronze metal card..after all Bronze & Silver are 2/3 possible medals an athlete can earn in the Olympics,besides Gold…shouldn’t all 3 be made out of metal instead of plastic..?Ahh well plastic isn’t so bad..I will adapt”

This is so incredibly fun! …and I only qualify for the Green bounty hunter card; So it doesn’t affect me directly, but it’s just very exciting being part of this entire thing. Whether or not they can make these changes, CIG is doing an absolutely fantastic job! If I wasn’t talking so much, I’d be speachless.

i think it’s quite fair for Bronze and up. thinking about it, $125 is about as much as you should pay for any normal collectors edition, and $250 definitely deserves the choice for the upgrade. Metal cards just make sense.

Oh wait 9500$… Ok so i want the model for the production cost only, they are going to be produced anyways and are not even personalised…. Well, wanting an upgraded model ship is sort of a different story. It’s more of a little milestone keepsake for the progressively higher ranks. As much as i’m going to love having a mini-constellation on my desk, i’m going to be much happier with my citizen card. The colour is a much more important milestone for your level of support to this project, and being able to make it metal gives it that extra edge of specialness.
When you’ve been playing Star Citizen for 2 years, and you’ve seen more battles than you can count, amassed a fortune and learned some amazing skills, you won’t be looking at your model ship and thinking “Man, that 6 inch model is so much better than a 3″, you’ll be looking at your card and thinking “Wow, that $250 i spent supporting this game was really worthwhile”, and the metal card will be all that much nicer than a plastic one

I don’t think it is in theory, they’re both an indicator of your pledge levels and a keepsake.

If you’re going to offer the upgrade to the metal cards for an additional fee, then it should have been stated up front. Sure would have saved me a lot of money.

Options are always good…but concentrating your pledge for a metal card…well…that’s not very effective considering the cost. Pledges are to support the development of the game, everything else is gravy. Lucky for you they are pouring it on thick and aren’t skimping on seconds.

On a side note: It is now apparent the poll is flawed. People that don’t even have bronze or silver cards are trying to suppress change for the sake of keeping their ego on high. The metal cards were a unique bonus for those that pledged more. If you paid more (because you obviously want this game made) to acquire this over the regular kind, you’d be a little upset to learn that anyone can get it for way cheaper than you got it.
I like the CIG is being so great about making everyone happy, but this just makes things way more complicated. Things should be locked in as they were, and like it was stated, that metal cards start at gold level and go up.
Dude, we are all in this to get a great game made. It’s a nice bonus but come on, people need to get their priorities straight. Firstly, you pledge to help CIG financially so they can make the game and secondly, you pledge to buy your favorite ship. Your last priority should be what kind of goodies there are in the package so you can wave them around showing everyone how generous you were and how you are better than everyone… Because that’s the wrong kind of mindset.

Dude by your argumentation everybody shout get the same goodies except the VIRTUAL ships…. YOU need to get your arguments straight that is, otherwise ppl have all right to start asking for the bigger and painted ship models, the blueprints and so forth….
I agree with Maus. When you think about it, the pledge tiers after 250 aren’t that different. Each pledge before that gives a new ship, but upgrading an EXTRA $250 only gives you +5000 credits, a golden card and an extra inch on your ship model. Spending an extra $500 to get to the $1000 mark only gives you +5000 credits more, a platinum card, an extra 2 inches of model size and a half hour chat with CR.
They aren’t ‘goodies’ that you’re paying for, they’re options for wealthier people to show their support. People shouldn’t think that getting a golden card is worth $250, because they could buy an entire other pledge for that and be much better ‘value for money’
TL;DR, Maus is right, we’re paying what money we can to get the game going. The perks are just small ‘thank you’s’

I didnt pay the extra for the bibs and bobs or even for a nice ship with life time insurance, I paid $250 because that is honestly as much money as I could throw at CR & CIG before the bank took back my house, thats how much I want this game made. If CIG want to offer me a Silver Metal Citizen card then great, a nice little thank you for pledging every spare cent I had for a game I really want made. I didn’t pay $250 to buy a Constellation & blueprints and citizen card etc, it was for CR & CIG to get this game off the ground. I think some people have the cart before the horse. I would say that this is just my 2 cents worth, but I’m broke so I might have to put this post on the Credit Card
People still have their exclusivity, if that is what matters to them.
The $10 upgrade gets a plastic bronze or silver card upgraded to a metal version of the same colour and design; it’ll just be a higher quality product. The people who paid the extra $250 to go from silver to gold get a different coloured card which fewer people will have and the knowledge that they went that little bit further to support the game.
Other than the fact that this is going to require some extra work and cause more delays (for everyone, or just the bronze/silver card recipients?), there really ought not to be an issue over this.
Flawed polls are a fact of life on this site, especially so in the forums where margins of error are often demonstrably high enough to render the “results” meaningless. As someone who has to work with statistics as part of $dayjob I despair at how ill thought out some of them are in terms of wording and options, especially given the heavily skewed readership of the site towards the more dedicated backers and hardcore fans.
Polling flaws cause you despair? Really? Hang in there dude. Maybe modern civilization will crumble over the next 10 years and you can spend your time scavenging the countryside for your next meal instead of being mercilessly ravaged by these first-world polling flaw atrocities. you’re being really nice to us… too nice! I mean, sure I’d like a fancy metal card rather than my plastic one, and I’d happily spend $10 more on it.
But on the other hand, I feel like the conditions should be settled, and everyone should just get what they signed up for — nothing more, nothing less. Sure there will always be whiners and complainers who want EVERYTHING because they don’t understand the point of a graduated reward system, and being a nice and customer-oriented company you want to appease everyone, but please just forget about that, it’s impossible.
With that said, I did vote “yes” because the poll was just asking for personal interest… but on a higher level, “morally” if you will, I’d kind of prefer you to just keep doing your own thing, follow your master plan, without getting distracted too much by every whim of the community.
Because in the end, the only thing that truly matters is that you’ll deliver a great game.

Not a lot of people voted so far around 800 people voted…. only like 8000 USD worth of pledge. Assuming that a metal card is worth let’s say 4 USD, that’s 4000 profit MINUS a lot of people’s time. I think it should be upped 20 USD at least.
I aggree with this complety it also feels like it underminds the higher teir cards bringing it in at such a low cost. I mean I paid $250 extra to get a metal card and now you can grab them for $10 bucks.
If CIG wan’t to do this then please up the price at least this way I can have some comfort in the fact that the extra funds received go towards making a better game which we all get to enjoy.
you shouldn’t have thought of it as paying $250 just for a card, it should be the other things you want to get as well, with the card as a bonus.
That said, I’m ok with it being upped to be more fair. They might just have to, to make sure the extra production costs are covered.
Also remember, $125 and especially $250 is a lot for a regular person to pay on a game that isn’t coming out for a while, and might not be what they expected. I think it’s pretty fair for Bronze and at absolute least Silver. Particularly if we have to pay a bit extra for it.
Those extra $250 also give you quite a range of additional ships to pick from. That is if you want to trade them in. The metal card really pales in comparison to that. Frankly speaking, I’d take a Constellation or two other mid range ships over that shiny metal in a heartbeat. I’m just saying =)

I think brozen is need to stay in plastic. and silver to become metal. I’m either get silver by ordering additional t-shirt of changing my pledge tier.
I seem to have totally forgotten the info only the “gold” cards and above where metal. I did not complain my silver card would be plastic. However, when given the chance to turn it into a metal one, even if I have to add some extra money to my pledge would be extremely nice. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to at least vote for that option, CIG!
I really like the fact that the developers listened to the community and responded so quickly. It gives me a lot of faith in the team and their principles knowing that they keep so close to the community.
I also think that the option of metal cards should stop at Silver. It seems to me that a lot of people upgraded their donations by quite a large amount (I for example went from $125 to $250) to make sure that their ‘founder’ card was metal. I dont think that everyone should be given the option for just $10. I am happy to have donated my $270 (so far) but do feel that it deserves some recognition and distinction from lower funders.
That all said, I think the development team are doing a superb job so far and it only makes me more excited for the game.
They could argue the exact same thing. Where to draw the line and why just at silver?
Silver is the first to get a connie so arguably it is a really good pledge level already and you have that distiction from the “lower” pledges.

All the people that are complaining about already having upgraded to a higher tier for the metal card, should understand that the choice was on them. The money spent was a pledge to the game’s development more than anything else. More rewards should just be considered a bonus, not the product of purchase.
That being said, I would LOVE a metal bronze card if possible. CIG is too considerate (and we should love them for it)
Firstly a big thank you to to RSI for even considering this for the community. A little goes a long way.
There seems to be a lot of “I pledged to X tier and only those on X tier or higher should get this”. What a disgusting attitude to have. One even had the hide to claim that “the value of the higher cards will be diminished as well because most cards will now be metal”. Placing a monetary value on these cards sickens me. As much as I am sure some of you would like them to be they are, a sign of support, not a penis extension you can flop out to show your imagined superiority to the rest of the community.
Don’t even get me started on the people who are upset because they pledged more just to upgrade the quality of their card. I can assure you, that you could downgrade your pledge level, and use that money to get a custom made card at whatever level and make it say whatever you wanted, for way less money than you pledged. If that is the only reason you pledged more to the game, then I wont be adding you to my list of preferred playmates, that’s for sure. In fact, you’ll be added to the opposite list.
Also if you aren’t of Bronze or Silver pledge level you really have no place voting in this poll. Don’t think for one minute that RSI is really that stupid as to think that some of you of higher levels aren’t voting no to protect your “precious”. Again poor form from supposed mature gamers.
Again I thank the Sandi and the RSI team for even thinking about giving us this option. I have always been planning to add more to my account, and I might even go above and beyond my plan if this level of customer service continues. I deeply appreciate what you are doing for us all.

I want this metal card for ME because for my personal “good feeling”. To give the game universe and maybe the community some additional subtle importance. To make sure it will be in good condition for many years. And to let it stand out of the dozen plastic cards in the wallet.
Why i havent pledged for gold card to have one? Primary reason: My wife would kill me (maybe not kill me but it would hurt).
She has much understanding for my hobbies but i dont want to explore the limits of it.
So o pledged for a Stella. Only for a stella and the gimmicks? Ha…. why should i pledge for a ship insurance if i dont know for sure i will love it in the game? For any other game i wouldnt spend so much money for this.
I pledged over 250 $ because i share the dream of such a space sim. Maybe not exactly like Chris but i am sure he will create a game nearly 90-95 % of my own dream. Stella is a nice bonus.

Anyone know if this metal will set off metal detectors? They usually make you empty your pockets in airports anyway, but it’d be good to know before hand.
To be honest, I don’t think it’s needed to add this in at all, people should be happy with what they already were getting – and further, to add something like this and not include all tiers, is something I’m a little surprised at.
To be clear, I don’t really care either way, and would have pledged higher if a metal card was what I wanted, but to give in to the people complaining, and only do so for a limited subset of pledgers (i.e. not including all pledge levels in this offer) – all that’s going to do is further divide people based on the amount of money they could pledge.
Having said that, if people want to pay extra for a metal card, then go for it…I just don’t see a reason to further divide people (just my opinion).
You’re welcome to your opinion, but I believe the overall content of the commentary here will show that the community is largely uniting over this and there are just a few loud voices who are crying dissent and entitlement.
And I’m not trying to give them a louder voice either – as you said (and I), just my opinion on the matter. I’m grateful for everything CIT has done so far, and if this yields a positive, then great, one more thing to be happy with them for.

I pledge for Freelancer but end up with Rear Admiral due to total pledge, I wish RSI can give us option if I we want a Bronze or Silver Card, if such thing happen.
I prefer a Freelancer rank and a bronze card look better than silver.
You can create secondary account and pledge some extras there…so you will get bronze card again…it is quite complicated but possible.
You can also contact [email protected] however I think they are very busy right now.
PS: You can also find someone who should get bronze card but wants silver card;)

Metal would be great! I was a bit down on the plastic, but wasn’t able to go gold. Not that I was complaining–any card is pretty cool. But metal would just make it that much sweeter.

I don’t believe this is the premise of this poll. It is just whether or not CIG will offer the option to upgrade the material of the cards. If you don’t want to pay to upgrade or if they decide there isn’t enough interest it won’t affect people who weren’t interested in this at all

To comment on the whole card deal : yes I think ppl from the higher pledges have been affecting the community voting, for metal instead of plastic cards for bronze and silver cards holders. I will recive a Gold and a Silver card and ofc I have voted for the possibility to get a metal silver card instead of a plastic one. But if the vote fails im also cool with that. I just wish ppl would remember it’s the whole game they are founding, and not a single metal card vs. a plastic card option.

It’s no way they can go ahead and print any of the cards below gold level now, before this poll and everything after that is dealed with. As for people purposely voting no. Why vote no? Because you upgraded just to get the metal card and they come out with this vote. Quit Crying. This game is getting funded because of the community as a whole. This is a nice perk and will bring in more funds which means more game content for us in the long run.
Heck I was a little bummed at my Silver being plastic too, but that’s no reason to down vote just because you upgraded to get a metal one and now feel cheated. It was your choice to upgrade in the first place. Nobody forced you to do it.
Heck I spent a week deciding if I wanted to upgrade my Silver pledge to get Gold not just for the metal card, but for the other stuff in the tiers too. Today I did upgrade to get Gold and that was before I saw this vote and guess what, I still voted yes because we as a community deserve it for what we all have accomplished (first and foremost getting the funding to start the making of this game) and what we will continue to accomplish. Remember we couldn’t have done this alone. So put your feelings aside and Vote YES.

So I just received an email saying Sandi does not yet have enough ‘yes’ votes to make the upgrades feasible. Uh, the number of votes for both bronze and silver upgrades are already greater than the number of kickstarter backers for each of those respective pledge levels. I know not everyone pledge via kickstarter but that seems kindof crazy to me. Just how many votes are required?

I’m sorry guys, but i’d vehemently oppose this.
Offering a “cheap” way of getting a metal card lessens the feeling of my (and others) donations at the respective levels. I realised I wasn’t going to get a metal one, so I added extra items to make the cut.
Personally i’d feel a little cheated that for only 10 bucks I could’ve had one of those cards.
Not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth, but should donaters of the gold or above levels perhaps get a “little extra” for their efforts if the vote succeeds?
To say it diminishes your contribution IMO is extremely negative. There is still a colour difference to distinguish you from the rest. The pledgers at lower levels will not be able to get the Golden or Platinum cards irrespective of metal or plastic.
I for one would love to be able to get the metal card to symbolise; my love for the genre, the durability of the game, and something i have been waiting 20 years for, a persistent world in the vein of Privateer created by none other than the man himself.
We all want metal.
It doesn’t cheapen or diminish your respective level. You still get all the exclusive stuff, plus you have the satisfaction of knowing you are really helping to fund this game. But more important CR knows.
