Draft FAQ

To say we’ve had a lot of questions in the past five days would be an understatement. We’re hard at work on an official RSI FAQ to supplement the great work being done by users at the forums. It will have its own place at the website soon, but we wanted to go ahead and share the work-in-progress here since many of you have questions you need answered now! Please post additional questions in the comments and we will do our best to keep this updated.

My community account is not showing my pledge!

We are currently working to sync our pledge database and our community database. Your pledge will show correctly soon and we will send out a message when this process is complete. If you pledged from a different e-mail than your RSI account, we will contact you after the database sync to incorporate your pledge manually.

Is my Golden Ticket gone?

No! We have a record of your Golden Ticket and it will be returned to your account in the near future. We won’t forget our earliest fans!

Is Star Citizen an MMO?

No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander series. The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content. Unlike many games, none of these aspects is an afterthought: they all combine to form the core of the Star Citizen experience.

What are the “Citizen Cards”?

Citizen Cards are physical props to prove that you have supported Star Citizen and will be one of the first pilots in space when the testing process starts. They will be wallet sized cards that you can carry with you anywhere you go. Citizen cards will also appear in the game itself, showing your character’s social standing, credit account and so on. We’re hoping to make them available to backers by Christmas 2012, so you can gift the game to friends and have something to show for it!

Can you tell me about the different ships?

We’re working on concept art right now that will show you the different levels of ships! For now, imagine the sort of ship advancement you encounered in Privateer or Freelancer, with the Aurora being the basic ship and others being improved or more specialized craft. The top-of-the-line ship in our pledge campaign is the RSI Constellation, which is a multi-person craft that includes a turret and a smaller fighter that can be manned by your friends!

How will modding work?

Players will be given full control of their game! When operating private servers, players will be able and encouraged to mod the game. It doesn’t stop there, though: we hope to institute a ‘mod approval’ process that will allow the best of the best player created ships and other additions to be integrated into the central persistent world as well.

Can I upgrade to a bigger ship?

Yes! You will always have your ‘pledge’ ship, but you can purchase and fly others to your heart’s content in the finished game. Star Citizen will feature plenty of other ships and we expect players will want to earn credits and figure out which suits their particular style of play best. You can also upgrade to a bigger ship during the crowdfunding phase by pledging additional money.

What platforms will Star Citizen be available on?

Star Citizen is a PC game through and through and could never be played on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or WiiU. We currently plan to support Windows and are examining our options regarding possible Linux and Macintosh releases. The Cloud Imperium team includes many Linux and Macintosh fans!

How can I work for Cloud Imperium Games?

Please e-mail [email protected] with your information.

Will Star Citizen only be in English?

No, we plan to support many languages. A huge percentage of space sim and PC gaming fans come from Europe and especially Germany, and we want to make sure Star Citizen is accessible to everyone. The game will initially be localized to French, German and Spanish with plans to handle other languages afterwards.

Can you explain the stretch goals?

The purpose of the higher stretch goals is to ensure that the game-as-described is finished in the two year time period. We intend to build the game that Chris Roberts described at GDC Online regardless, but without additional funding we are going to have to do it one piece at a time, starting with Squadron 42, rather than as a single larger production. With more funding we can include more ships, systems, unique locations, animations and cinematic sequences.

Why Direct And No Publisher?

Publishers are useful in the old physical distribution world, but the Internet is the great equalizer. Notch didn’t need a publisher to reach 20-million Minecraft fans. Riot games didn’t need a publisher to reach 30-million League of Legends players, and Wargaming.net didn’t need a publisher to reach 20-million World of Tanks gamers. If we were building a big “AAA” console game it would be crazy to try without a publisher. But we want to build a PC game and publishers increase costs because of their need to recoup their sizable overhead cost. We want to make sure all the money raised goes directly to the development of the game. So we’re throwing ourselves on the mercy of the PC gamers out there that share our vision and passion for the platform and the space combat genre to raise money outside of the “cartel” of traditional publishers. The game will cost less, be more creatively pure, and, most importantly, be built for the real “core” audience – not some corporate suit worried about including all the casual gamers.

Is Star Citizen “free to play”? A subscription game?

To play Star Citizen you need only to buy the initial game. There will never be a monthly charge for usage. Some in-game items may be available as microtransactions, but we will NEVER sell anything that can’t be acquired through honest (and fun!) gameplay.

What will the gameplay be like?

Star Citizen will feature gameplay similar to the original Wing Commander and Privateer, with a more realistic physics system. This means that it is NOT a ‘click to kill’ interface like most modern MMOs; your success in combat is going to depend as much on your skill with a space fighter as it will with your ship upgrades and your pocket book.

Why not Kickstarter?

We love Kickstarter. We’ve backed projects on their site, and believe everyone in the development community owes a debt to Kickstarter for putting crowd funding on the map, and making it legitimate. But for us the ultimate goal of crowd funding is about connecting the “crowd” directly with the creators with as little friction as possible. By building a crowd funding component directly into our site we can insure everyone who wants to back the game can – we provide multiple payment options to make sure that wherever in the world you are there is an option that can work for you. It means you just have one destination to support the project, read updates, and most importantly participate with other members of the community! All on a site that’s designed around the game universe being created, providing the least friction possible. Kickstarter, as great as it is, can’t deliver this experience, which is why we’ve decided to go it alone.

Can you estimate the system requirements for Star Citizen?

There will be a lot of optimization in the next 24-months, plus the usual fast pace of technology, so it is hard to say absolutely. At the moment you will be able to play it on a 4GB dual core PC with a GTX 460 or greater, but not with full fidelity. If you’re running an i7 2500, 2600, 2700 or better with a GTX 670 or greater you will get the full experience and we will only scale up from there. You will need a dedicated GPU. Since the game is built on CryEngine, their system requirements will stay roughly the same as ours.

    • Can you explain more detail on the physics system? Will there be visual (and mechanical) feedback based on damage such as blowing terminals, cracked windows leaking air etc. and what is the planned physics model (i.e newtonian etc)

Can you explain how the pvp system will work? How the players will join an “instance”?
Thanks for the update, I can’t wait for this game!

I’m also very interested in this topic for the opposite reason. I hate PvP but I loved Wing Commander and other space sims. Please tell me that we’ll be able to participate in the persistent world without having to endure PvP.

        • Avatar of Mark Mark says:

I read that article and I didn’t really see anything about PvP in it. I did however read an article at http://forums.starcitizenbase.com/topic/46-when-pvp-becomes-a-crutch/ which seemed to imply that you’ll be open for PvP any time, anywhere. I sure hope that’s not true because that would be the one thing that would cause me to reluctantly not pledge and not support this game. This would be a tragedy as Wing Commander is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s one of the games that I use to measure other games against. Unfortunately, I despise PvP and I simply cannot support a game that would force me to PvP in order to enjoy the game to its fullest.

          • Avatar of FeeKTesH FeeKTesH says:

How i understood the PVP aspect of the game was if you are playing the game on an online server; that’s where the PVP comes into it. Being offline you would just fight AI.

          • Avatar of Shade Shade says:

If you hate the PvP play in singleplayer mod (Squadron 42), to be able to choose if you want to participete or not takes all the suspens and fun away.

          • Avatar of Mark Mark says:

Unfortunately, if what everyone is saying is true, it looks like this is not the game for me.

There’s no point in spending money on this if all I can do is play offline or stay in safe zones. I like playing online co-op games but free-for-all PvP is not something I can tolerate. It’s a terrible shame because I really wanted to like this game.

          • Avatar of Damocles Damocles says:

Well, it would be a little dishonest for me to say i totally get where you are coming from since PvP is what kept me playing Freelancer for as long as i did, but i DO understand that there are players that do not share my love for that aspect of the game. But while PvP is AN aspect of the game, i have a feeling that with the size and scope of the world it seems like they are going for with Star Citizen, something tells me that if you didnt want to interact with other humans ever, you might just be able to find your own corner of the galaxy and play however you want to you hearts content. I mean, sure theres a chance that anyone you run into may open fire on you, most times they wont unless they have what passes for a “reason” to them. If they’re pirates, money talks. Sure there are guys out there who will always be bullies, but its the same in our own real life as well. Typically though if you find yourself being attacked repeatedly by the same guy/clan chances are they think you insulted their mothers. (my own clan wouldnt put persistant KOS’s on someone unless they DID insult our mothers, wives, team mates etc)
But, it can also add a layer to the game and how you play it, if youre running a freighter, dump as much money into upgrading its speed as you can then at the first sign of trouble go for a hard burn and unass the AO.

OR, i just happen to know a team of mercs who would be MORE than happy to turn those who might harass you into floating clouds of twisted metal and frozen goo. (For a very modest fee of course ;) )

But if its enough of a concern that you’d reconsider pledging now, at least wait until its out and give it a shot before you decide. You may change your feelings about PvP by then, you may decide that the rest of the games positives exceed the negatives of the PvP aspect, or 1000 other cliche’s. We’ve all bought games that we ended up not being entralled with, and no one says you have to pledge 10k right now before you make a long term decision, but it would be a shame for the Space Sim community to lose someone based on initial details of a game thats still 2 years from release.

          • Avatar of Mark Mark says:

Thank you Damocles. That was the most thoughtful reply I’ve ever gotten from someone who is a PvP advocate. It still doesn’t change my opinion of PvP as an option for me though. I love playing online with others but I prefer co-op. However, your advice about checking back at a later date to see how things are progressing is sound.

        • When you say PvP do you mean getting chased by pirates or legitimate war with 2 factions of players?

If you stay in safe systems then you won’t have to worry about privateering for example

    • Avatar of Vertigo1 Vertigo1 says:

I have this same question, but also, will there be any plans for organized pvp. By that I mean seting up events to spur conflict? Any thoughts on major league gaming in the future? I can just see teams going agaisnt each other; each with different ship types and loadouts. Plus you would see top ace pilots stand out for thier skill and we can finally experience a game that requires more than just button pushing to achieve victory! I know this is still early phase development but this game has a lot of potential!

  3. Avatar of Greaser Greaser says:

Thanks a lot for this overview… most of my questions are answered… but is a GTX 460 a must? Until now there are games with this engine where an 8800 GT is accectable…

    • Avatar of Tim Tim says:

Don’t forget the game won’t be out for another two years, so having a GTX 460 in two years time will be quite low-end, and current GTX 680 class cards will be middle-of-the-range.

To be honest I hope they don’t aim for lower spec’s, as that will lead to compromises in the fidelity of the graphics and physics, which after watching the trailer I don’t think any of us want!

      • Avatar of Greaser Greaser says:

Tim – i think your right – but I thougt about Alpha and Beta… fortunately my wife said to me: “Two years – than you will get another PC” :-)

        • Avatar of Timmy51m Timmy51m says:

I assume this will be dx11 only if the minimum is a 460. 8800gt is dx10. Your card will be 7 years old by the time this is out anyway so if you play a lot of games it will be a miracle if it’s not dead by then.

          • Hey guys – currently the prototype works in both DX9 and DX11. The full level of detail (LOD) system is not implemented yet (its a little more complicated for huge ships like the carrier than in a regular game using CryEngine or Unreal ) but when it is it should be able to scale down to the CryEngine base specs (at the time of release).

So it wont look quite the same, but should play fine!

One last disclaimer: While the game runs in both DX9 and DX11 today, I would recommend being on DX11 for the game as it will just look a lot better.

          • Avatar of Greaser Greaser says:

Thank you, Chris… but indeed – I’am willing to get a better PC until the release of Star Citizen… but must we calculate that there will be a DirectX 12 until than?

And by the way – thank you for making a dream come true… from a 53 years old fan, that plays Freelancer since the start in Europe (I had the pleasure to play it in US-Version as a tester for a paper) without longer brakes… It’s the third PC the game is running on…

  4. Avatar of Durallan Durallan says:

Very good to see and great to see that about ships! hopefully the pledges will be more fleshed out as you figure out how much money you get and what you can afford to give the fans!

  5. Avatar of SpaceRat SpaceRat says:

Can we play the “Privateer” part in a single player mode also? I love the idea to play the “Wing Commander” part in single player mode because I am not a big player and I can choose the difficulty level. I am also a big fan of the Elite concept: make some trade in different worlds, fight to save my cargo or enrol myself as a mercenary to protect the other traders cargo. Because I am not a hard core gamer I am afraid that only the privateer part will be online and that I will face too experienced gamers to have fun with the game. Can you give some information about the “privateer” part of the game?

    • Avatar of Tim Tim says:

At the very least you could host your own Privateer server and not allow anyone else in 8-)

      • Avatar of jammi jammi says:

Well, I seem to recall that the SP campaign (Squadron 42) would allow for a player to muster out after their tour of duty. I’m guessing that means the character could then explore the universe offline, or go online for the full interactive experience. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  6. Avatar of DbTkenny DbTkenny says:

By 4GB do you mean 4GB in memory?

  7. Avatar of Sendokami Sendokami says:

How will this be a “persistent world”? How will this work if it is not an MMO? You talked of players naming jump points if they found them first and the like, but how will it work unless all the players are on the same server and can be interacted with? The persistent world is the biggest selling point for me and I would like to know exactly how it will be implemented. I’m looking for a game with more then just 60 or so players playing and interacting.

    • Avatar of Tim Tim says:

I would guess RSI will host a “master server” that all clients will sync with prior to playing, so everyone will have an updated list of jump points and so on.

    • RSI is indeed going to host the master server, where i guess people are encouraged to go to if they want to play in a massive persistent universe, but people can also create their own private servers and mod them to their needs :)

    • I’m curious about this too, when I read about the game I thought it would be like an MMO, you sail your ship somewhere and you can encounter other players in the world and fly around with your friends etc. You could to decide to attack other ships as a pirate or defend other players with your own mercenary faction or something. Now it seems like this isn’t possible? Needs some clearing up I think.. Or maybe I’m just not getting it :P Anyone care to explain? :)

      • Definitely need clearing up. I watched the 1 hour Gamespot GDC online presentation and Star Citizen sure came across as an MMO to me. I pledged based on my perception that in the least, Star Citizen will have full multiplayer content.

        • its an SPAMMO-single player and massively multiplayer online, Chris Roberts is bridging the gap of space sim fans single player campaign and freerome AND private servers (like mine craft) AND a master RSI server for the MMO side of things for all the online side of things
this allows fans of SP space games and Eve fans to relate to this ambitious endeavor Chris has in mind

  8. Avatar of Chili Chili says:

Thanks for the update, btw you double posted regarding the system requirements!

  9. Avatar of Wheatkings Wheatkings says:

When we start to get into larger ships, carriers, cruisers excetera how will the ship be piloted, will the “captain” be able to man a “tactical” station and issue instructions to his weapons officer, helm, engineer among other posts as well as people playing in the fighters (sensors show a enemy squadron over there 2nd squad go check it out)? Something similar to the Commander role in Battlefield 2.

  10. Thank you, this was very helpful!

  11. Avatar of Harlock Harlock says:

It’s great to see those answers however I feel that the stretch goal thing should be explained in more detail, hopefully when the full FAQ goes live. What I’d like to know is if after the 30 day period, say we reach the 2m mark, investors are happy and they give the green light for funding Squadron 42, there will still be the chance to pledge to accelerate the development of Star Citizen in full or at that time everything will be set and we can only wait for the project to be done?

    • Avatar of Brenelael Brenelael says:

I took it as the amount of pledges will dictate what they can accomplish in the initial 2 year development cycle. This means that depending on the amount raised we may only see the Squadron 42 part at first(after 2 years) and the rest would be developed and added later. If they can raise a lot more however the amount they can accomplish in that same two years raises as well due to being able to hire a bigger team. So this means we will most probably only see a fraction of the game at launch and the rest will follow through updates after unless they reach the 3-5 million point during the crowd funding.

      • Avatar of JakeStoanes JakeStoanes says:

That is what I was lead to believe. I think that they plan to make the entire game as best they can before they are done, but the amount they raise through crowdfunding changes how much they will get done in their current time frame.

  12. Avatar of Rebuc Rebuc says:

Very helpful to see this all posted in one place :)

  13. Avatar of Xaris Xaris says:

    Thoughts:
-Emphasize that the whole persistent world vision is going to happen without the stretch goals (it will just take longer)! People aren’t wanting to pledge because they think the game is going to get trimmed down to just the campaign.

-Get that concept art out there well before the end of the crowd-funding campaign! And make a separate page for the pledge descriptions, maybe a video describing the rewards and showing them off, instead of just the expanding tabs. People are confused about them (like not realizing there are some that have the same reward and just let you pledge different amounts). Explain what we will start with if we don’t pledge (presumably you start with some clunker).

    Now for fanboyish excitement:

4 Gb RAM: Check! (8 Gb, 32 Gb capacity)
    i7 2600: Check!
Gtx 460 or greater: …well I’ve subscribed to the Newegg video card RSS to look for sales. Looks like ~$150 for the GTX 460 and $300-$400 for the 670, but they’ll presumably get cheaper in the next two years! I’d rather not spend ten times as much on hardware as I do on the game itself…

  14. Additional question about pledging:
Will it be possible to make 3 pledges with the same paypal account. Gift one to my bro. Keep 2 for myself and receive both those ships, accumulated credits amd irl goodies for my 2 pledges and pick the title of my lower value pledge?

    Additional question about titles:
Are these exclusive to pledges? Or will the same be obtainable in game? Will others be obtainable in game? Can I forever stay with Freelancer or will Certain things I do in game overwrite my current title?

    • Avatar of magistrar magistrar says:

      Seconding this question.

Do we need to create a different account that we intend to give to a friend and pledge under it, or should we buy an additional pledge, such as Mercenary, under our account and options will come later for gifting the game, privilege of alpha and beta access, the citizen card, and/or the galactic credits to a friend?

    • Avatar of K Z Ivan K Z Ivan says:

Also interested in multiple pledges already done so fer myself but looking at getting it for both my nephews and brother who were hooked on freelancer as hard as i was

  15. Avatar of Tony2438 Tony2438 says:

Thank you things seem to be more real now, I am so excited about this and should bring in a lot more pledges from people who have been waiting for more info and reach the magic figure

  16. I see they mention the i7 series of CPU which is Intel, but there is no mention of the AMD series.

So I’m curious as to how those translates to the AMD series.

My 1 year old rig runs with an AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3/3.7 GHz (6 core) and a GTX 560 Ti 2 GB.

Would I be able to run the game with full fidelity?
Or would I need to upgrade at some point?

    • Avatar of Attricus Attricus says:

This is using CryEngine. You have pc enough to handle Crysis2 right now. So you can play this easily.

      • I could run Crysis 2 on my old 2.93 GHz Dual Core CPU and GTX 465 1 GB GPU, With all settings maxed and still get run it smoothly.
So Crysis 2 is not much of a benchmark in my opinion.
And Crysis 2 was designed to run on consoles as well which uses at least 5 year old tech.

This game is going to run with far greater detail than Crysis 2 ever could.
I dont really expect to have to upgrade my CPU, it should hold for a good many years still.
I was thinking if I might have to upgrade my GPU and perhaps have to add some more RAM really.

  17. Avatar of Kallussed Kallussed says:

Will there be a high end digital only package? I’m interested in the Wingnut package, but I don’t want any of the physical junk. It’s a waste of resources to mail me all of that stuff to only have it end up in the garbage. Even the base package mails out a card that I have no interest in. I prefer that all of my game related swag be things like in game items and extras.

    • Avatar of AgentExeider AgentExeider says:

you don’t want a ship shaped USB drive, whats teh matter with you. schwag is awesome.

      • Avatar of Kallussed Kallussed says:

I travel a lot. No need for a package to sit on my front porch while I’m wandering around Costa Rica. I put my value in the game not some useless 8GB thumb drive that will sit in a drawer. Maps, books, CDs, all garbage to me. So why make me buy it when I just want the digial goodies? Sounds like a reasonable request.

        • Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

Did the sir ever heard about E-bay for reselling “garbage”? (LOL)

          • Avatar of Kallussed Kallussed says:

Why buy it only to resell it? That’s a lot of wasted effort on everyone’s part when I don’t want it in the first place.

          • Look at it this way. If this game dose come and I have no dought that it will come; Dose extra itums your talking about can be come calectords adishions and be wort a lot of money n a fuew years. So Idkeep them if I where you couse this game is going to make histroy;)

        • Avatar of capi3101a capi3101a says:

I’m kind of the same mind – the swag is nice and I’d use it, but is there a way to opt out of it?

Okay, really: my impetus here is to make a reasonable pledge without my wife knowing about it for a couple of years. The swag would be a bit of a giveaway…

          • Avatar of Kallussed Kallussed says:

Ha ha. Been there, done that. If it were an end table my wife would be happy. If it’s a video game then it’s a waste of money. I feel your pain.

      • Avatar of DarkPhantom DarkPhantom says:

Maybe in 2 years time they might offer package or download.
Most of the Games these days are using Steam download or server sights download. This would save alot of money through packaging, delivery cost etc… 24 months is a long way off yet things can change.

        • Avatar of Kallussed Kallussed says:

I assumed the game would be delivered digitally in the first place. That’s why they offer the “Spaceship shaped USB stick of game and all digital elements”. So it’s safe to say under $125 and you’ll get no physical media.

By the way, I’m not trying to come off as a prick calling the swag junk. I’m sure it will be high quality and many people will want it. I’m just not interested in it in the least. I would prefer not to pay for it when a digital only package minus the swag could be $99 instead of $125. Save some gas, a tree, landfill space, and me a few bucks by doing a digital only package.

    • Avatar of Solarokh Solarokh says:

Same here, I only need the digital content. Since I’m international, I do not feel like spending an additional $15 for the gear / card after I pledge.

    • Avatar of Kallussed Kallussed says:

I just backed the game on Kickstarter at the $30 level. I’ll upgrade my bid when you add a digital only package (I hope you do). Thanks!

      • Avatar of Kallussed Kallussed says:

I upgraded to the $60 Digital Bounty Hunter. Keep the high end digital only packages coming. Also take note that even at the same price digital only is far outselling physical goods. Probably the international peeps joining in.

  18. Avatar of AgentExeider AgentExeider says:

ok, yeah I am going to have to work on getting a better video card. However the description of the other specs, my rig already has better then that, so I still feel good about that.

I’m thinking of going full AM3 eventually but Am2+ has been pretty amazing so far.

  19. This is a nice start to a FAQ. We’ll hold up our end and keep asking questions

  20. Avatar of Biggles Biggles says:

One thing I am interested in being an SP player is the story line. Will it be continuous ie: updated from time to time with new campaigns quests etc so that I have something to play for once the main story line is completed? It would be nice if it weren’t locked up like Freelancer where the storyline continuation, Crossfire, is patchy and glitchy because the game was never built to have any more added on to it. Also is there a way I can get the screen colours changed here so I can read what I am typing? Right now it is the very lightest of blue on a white background and impossible to read .

    Cheers

    • Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

Crossfire is just one possible continuation. Personally, I prefer Discovery or Shattered Worlds. But it is a matter of choice :)

      • Avatar of Biggles Biggles says:

Crossfire is the only one that seemed to carry foward the story line mode for single player from what I read so that is why I used it. I haven’t tried either of those two so maybe I should back up my game and reload one of the others. Do they both carry foward a story line? I finished Crossfire quite a while ago so have just been idling. I mentioned it only for the reference to being able to continue with a story long after the game is out.

        • Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

Discovery introduces a new faction: GALLIA. And yes, it continues the story line. Shattered Worlds is very interesting too, although so much oriented to multi-player now (I am only interested in the SP by now). If you play Discovery 4.86, I hope you will really enjoy it (at least, as much as I do). That will mitigate the waiting till the 1st alpha of Star Citizen :)

    • The single player story side will have story / campaign updates. It’s designed in to the system from the start.

The concept is similar to the original Wing Commander mission packs. We’ll have to charge for these content updates (as it costs money to create them) but the plan is to keep them low like the original Wing Commander packs – say $15-20 depending on size.

We may also seed some smaller free ones in if things are going swimingly once we launch properly as a gift to the community.

Its all really a matter of being able to afford to create the content because as much as everyone working on this game is doing it for the love of creating an amazing universe they have bills to pay!

      Hope that helps!

      • Avatar of Biggles Biggles says:

Thanks, that sure does help. I don’t mind paying for more content as I too believe in Tanstaafl so I am glad to see the SP won’t end with Squadron 42.

Great news! Of course, helping you guys at GIG to pay your bills is a little reward for making real the illusions of the worldwide space sim gaming community :) For me, it will be a pleasure to see that an innovative and tallented start up company such as CIG grows and achieves succeess! Thanks for the updates. Really looking forward to this game :) Out of curiosity, will the Constellation have an AI option to control the turret/fighter if no RL friends are online? Will it be possible to put the ship on autopilot and fly the fighter yourself if so desired (or used as a lifeboat if the main ship gets disabled)? Thanks!

    • Yes!

The idea is that the AI can run the turrets (or even you main ship), but it would be much better with friends.

And we’ll allow you to be flying alone with AI and your friends can drop in / out as they chose / you allow. So maybe you’re doing a trade run and you are attacked – you should be able to message your friends, and those that are online and want to drop in can take over the AI roles and help you out.

      • oh.. friends can remote control parts of the ship even if they didn’t board the constellation? Now that is sweet! subspace intergallactical communications ftw! with our tech lag would suck bigtime ;-)

      • Avatar of Luke Luke says:

So, if I want to operate turrets AI will pilot the ship? That realy would be step forward from flying straight when in turret mode :-)
Will I be able to command AI what to do – like evasive maneuvering, hold on course, circles around target…?

It would be nice a “Freelancer” style for the SP experience once the SQ-42 campaign is finished… I mean, something like DO WHAT YOU LIKE AND GO FREE TO WHEREVER YOU MAY ROAM! Of course it will be planned for the MMO-side, but it will be amazing to have it also for the SP-side. Personally, I do not like to rely on the Internet for gaming (sure it is a consequence of having watched the “Zeitgeist” film hehehe). Anyway, thanks for this FAQ section!

  28. Avatar of Attricus Attricus says:

Thanks for the update and for the spanish translation :)

My doubt is… If you want to create the maximun pc experience with this game and you are using actual CryEngine. Won’t this game be old by launch time in two years?

Please do not be a new Duke Nukem.

    • No!

The prototype you saw is more advanced than CryEngine3. There’s been a lot of engineering done on top of it to handle the massive range of scale and huge poly counts.

But I picked CryEngine3 because of its scalability – especially on PC – as it was originally designed as a PC engine NOT a console one. So you should not be worried about the future.

You should also know that Crytek are constantly upgrading / improving the engine – its not a static thing. By the time the game goes live the engine will probably be called CryEngine4, but it will be an evolution of what we have now. We are working very closely with Crytek and are sharing code back and forth, so some of the features we build will become available in their SDK in the future and also we’re always receiving new features almost in real-time with what Crytek are putting into their own games.

Doing it this way allows us to spend our engineering resources on the features we need to realize the Star Citizen vision. It would be a waste of time to write our own rendering, sound, UI, input, or file streaming systems as we wouldn’t be able to do much better than Crytek or Epic have done with their next generation engine. Its much better to build on already engineered and proven system that can scale with a PC as processors and GPUs improve.

I wish I had this option when I built Freelancer – we invested well over two years into just the base tech working before we could really dig into the game aspects. Freelancer would have shipped in 2000 or 2001 instead of 2003 if we had followed the path we’re using for Star Citizen.

  29. Avatar of Zhaky Zhaky says:

Question: You mentioned players who succesfully jumped through a jump point as the first to do so, got to name the jump point. Will this mean we have to live with a jump point called “YourMom” for the rest of the game? I know you want to put lots of work into immersion, and this sort of stuff really breaks immersion, or at least that’s my opinion of it.

Can you give us some more details as to how this will work? Will the name-game eventually stop and will we have to accept the names the jump points have been given or will they change eventually? If so how would this work out?

    • Avatar of JakeStoanes JakeStoanes says:

I will admit I am a little concerned about this as well. Most games i’ve played have more than enough people that would use this as an excuse to leave their permanent “mark” in a negative sense.

    • As it’s a curated universe, players will not be able to name the system or jump point anything they want.

There will be some naming rules – the default would be the players name (not their handle / nick name). player’s can request a different name but it will have to follow the games’ naming rules (which we’ll publish when we get closer to this being something that can happen)

      Hope this makes sense!

  30. Avatar of JakeStoanes JakeStoanes says:

Out of curiousity, you say it won’t be an MMO, I am curious how many players will be able to interact with each other, and will their interactions be x person servers? Or is it a larger server with x person instances? I know the overall goal is to create a community, so i’m just wondering what the chances are of randomly running into other players in the vast universe is going to be, if it’s not an actual massive multiplayer online game, but is more split into different sections.

  31. Avatar of Modes Modes says:

My question is, will there be a physical copy avaible for people who made a pledge?

I love putting on display the games i bought.
This is a reason i NEVER bought a digital only game in my life and this is the only reason stoping me from making a pladge.
I’m willing to pledge now and later upgrade for physical copy if there will be such option, but i have to know that you at least considering such a option.

I REALLY don’t want to pay twice for a game (once for digital now and once for physical copy in 2 years) so if the only way for getting physical copy is to buy it in 2 years i will be forced to give my money to you then.

    • I for one have bought mostly digital downloads over the later years, except for a few select games I wanted a physical copy of.

For this game however I would love to have a physical box to put on display a shelf where others could see it.
I intend to make a pledge regardless, but I would still very much like to know if I could have a box to show off as well.

    • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

From a certain pledge level (125 USD) onwards you get an USB stick with the game (from the Wingnut level description: “Spaceship shaped USB stick of game and all digital elements“). There are additional physical goods like a CD with the soundtrack, a book, ship models, etc. which depend on your pledge level.

Can you explain the effect of “social status” in the game?

    Thanks,

    redmaw

  35. Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

A very important question (for two reasons): is Star Citizen going to be riddled by DRM (Digital Restriction Management)?

I hope not, as that would decrease the likelihood, that the game runs smooth (from an early stage on) with Wine, in case there is no native Linux support, and, probably more important for all backers: it wastes our money on a totally pointless endeavour (never seen any DRM that really works and doesn’t annoy the hell out of honest customers). Money, that could have gone towards another ship, mission, planet, whatever.

So, please include in your FAQ, whether you intend to use DRM (“broken by design”) or not. Thanks!

    • We hate DRM, so the intention is to be DRM free.

For the persistent universe you’re going to need to log with your account as we need to be the keepers of location, equipment and status for the obvious reasons. And if you want to have friends drop into your single player experience you will also have to be connected to our servers (as this is how we match make you with your friends)

But you can play the single player game offline with no DRM and you’ll also be able to run your own server without any need to connect to our servers.

      Hope that helps!

Will we be able to run Star Citizen in 64bit?

    • Right now it ONLY runs in 64 bit :-) (mainly because the prototype build is compiled for the 64 bit machines its being developed on)

Final version will be 32 and 64 bit.

      -Chris

      • Avatar of Belakor Belakor says:

Will the game even run on a 32 bit system? Considering it can only have a max of 2gb RAM? Actually who uses 32bit nowadays anways :D ?

        • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Linux (and other systems with PAE support) can address more than 4 GB on a 32 bit x86 system. ;-) (SCNR)

        • I dont know where you got your numbers from, but 32 bit systems support up to 4 GB ram.
Lots of people still use Windows XP which is primarily 32 bit, though there are 64 bit versions of it as well.
There are also 32 bit versions of Vista and Win 7 and some use that too.

          • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Not 100 % sure as I’m a Linux user: but didn’t XP give you only 3.something GB and ~ 1 GB of the maximum was not available? Might be wrong though or fixed in the meantime. In any case I’m pretty sure XP didn’t come with PAE support and couldn’t address more than those 4 GB (32 bit version).

Still, the “2 GB” figure seems way off, I agree. ;-)

          • Avatar of wkdzel wkdzel says:

I know i’m late to the party but 32bit systems have 4GB worth of addresses (ignoring PAE and such) so basically every device takes an address and the memory attached to those devices use addresses so addressable system memory = 4gb – Memory on devices (like a gpu) – 1 address per device, so it really depended on what kind of GPU you had. If you had 2x1GB GPUs then you could only address 2G of system RAM but you if you had a 256M GPU then you could address 3.74G of system RAM. So the 2G “limit” someone recalls might actually be correct if they had a really high-end PC at the time with 2 x 1G or 4x 512M GPUs in it.

      • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Native 64 bit support? THis just gets better by the minute! (It’s probably going to be the first commercial game I’ll own which comes with native 64 bit support…)

      • Holy smoking crackpot, native 64 bit support?
Dont suppose anyone here can fast forward time to the release of this game? :P
I have allot of work to do in preparation for this game.

No please do not get the legs of the game with 32 bit support. Vista and windows 7 can upgrade for free now. XP is dead. in two years time 32 bit will be almost dead as well.
Push the game to the max with 64 bit support it is what most player are asking for. it having to support 32bit that is holding pc games back i say.

  39. One thing I have been trying to weap my head around is the whole concept of battle instances and matchmaking that has been fleshed out a bit offsite. And how it relates to travel times and size of the universe. I think I get the part where I and a buddy fly from A to B. And halfway through we get matchmaked/intercepted by 3 pirates. The system creates a battleinstance for the 5 of us with plenty of slots open for additional random people plus reserved spots for buddies of all 5 of us. i call all my friends for help.
1 is in A where I started already in his ship in orbit. He flies off immediatly. It will still take him as long as it took us. So teavel times must be very short, no? Another buddy was in B at the bar waiting for us. He’ll first need to run to his ship, take off and then fly to us.
A third friend is a half dozen systems further off and a 4th one at the other end of the galaxy. If even friends 1 and 2 want to make it in time either travel and getting off a station/carrier time must be very short. Or fight times very long. Or the battle instance must be very big and the pirates will still be very far from us and we can delay fight by taking them on a merry chase.
Now friend number 4 probably will be out of luck and never make it in time. But either friend nimber 3 six systems over will make it in time. And then fights need to be really long or travel speed really hyperfast. Or he wont make it in time either. But then I either need to have 3 frighterloads of friends or the universe is very small.Or I’ll never get any help at all…

I really am so exited about Star Citizen and your vision has fired up my imagination and wants to prelive it all already. But my engineers brain keeps breaking down because it cant fit it all together. Now having written it all down. Maybe this is way beyond the scope of the FAQ. But maybe one day a good topic for a comm link?

Loove what you are trying to do and think its beyond awesome to see all the replies here in the comments ..

    • There will be two options for your friends to help you out -

      1) Warping (or in WC terms auto-piloting) in from close by to your battle instance. If your friend is on the other side of the galaxy he wont be able to get to you. You’ll need to be in-system, or maybe a jump away (and this will delay you – you essentially have to get to the system of your friend and the then warp to join)
      2) Drop into your friends ship (if its big enough for this) to man a turret, or on the bigger player ships maybe pilot a small fighter tender. This is drop in drop out style co-op, that leaves your friend’s ship docked where it was when he answered your call to arms.

  40. Will the ships mentioned in the pledges be exclusive to that or later obtainable in the game itself, either through credits or maybe ship blueprints ?

    • I think that has already been answered in the faq on the pledge site:
everything bought can also be achieved by putting in game-time.(am assuming here a pledge is considered bought as well)
But I thought as well specifically concerning the pledge ships! But can’t find the reference anymore. Sorry.

      • Thanks for anwsering, but I have seen plenty of crowdfunded independent projects where the funders are rewarded with an exclusive (ingame) item.

The ability that everything bought can also be achieved by putting in game-time, is for the ingame cashshop, and I can’t assume that involves these ships mentioned in the pledge.

  49. Chris,

Do you have plans to support multi-monitor PC gaming rigs?

I’m sure I’m not alone in this, many Gamers now in days will run games on Surround-View (nVidia) or Eyefinity 3 (AMD) that’s basically 5760 x 1080 resolution as one long screen, or 3 separate renders, for games that supports this feature.

It helps immersion and I see it as a perfect fit for this game (Left window, Front window, Right Window)

    To Top the above question:
Can it scale out to Eyefinity 6 (5760 x 2160) or as 6 separate part of the ships cockpit view?

    • I haven’t got that set up running quite yet, but I intend to!

      So the answer is yes!

    • Multidisplaytech really still has a ways to go. While thinking about a diy mock cockpit I was thinking about this and what you’d basically need is, depending on cockpit, something like the two top thirds of an elongated square gyrbicupola but using rectangles instead of squares:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elongated_square_gyrobicupola

I guess you could replace the whole part behind you with one gigantic one. or just a wide top part (as behind and below you will be your ship). The below your hip to shoulders screens you wouldn’t need either, though I have seen cockpits where there are windows below seatlevel too. But to make a cockpit with only above seat vision you’d already need 10 rectangular screens and 2 triangular ones….

Good thing VR headsets are coming. Though I guess the Oculus Rift will be a big step in the right direction but far from what the tech would be perfected (160% horizontal and vertical FoV, 6kx6k resolution, 1ms lag). That combined with hand/finger/feet tracking and either acurate placement of corresponding object irl or some haptic feedback built into the shoes and gloves. As crazy as this sounds it will be possible long before a 20 monitor setup will be….

Which is a pity, cuz a real setup with 25 monitors and headtracking connected to movable guns would be the ultimate Star Citizen experience I think.

I guess Chris Roberts will just have to make another comeback in 20 years time ;-)

  50. I’m hoping SC will be way better optimized for multi-display support, like Supreme Commander for example, it takes full advantage of multiple displays, by having the main battle on 1 or 2 monitors, and if you have a 3rd monitor you can display the Radar or Tactical Map, etc.

  51. Avatar of Kobiqoi Kobiqoi says:

    Hi

Just a question the about pledges.

Say I pledge $250 now will I be able to upgrade my pledge to the $500 tier by adding and another $250 a month later and then be able to get the reward form tier instead of the first one and then say add another $500 the next month to upgrade to that tier?

Just curious because for me it kind of critical so I can nowhere I need to pool my resources as with all the new windows 8 stuff coming out near the end of pledging I’d like to know so I know whether or not to get a new phone and pledge or if the pledges can’t be upgraded after the end of the first 30 whether I have to pool all my resources to the pledge all at once.

    Thanks.

  52. I would like to know if its possible to provide an alternate delivery address for any of the physical items. I personally like to have anything I get delivered to my work as its manned 24/7 full security camera’s etc and I never have any of the problems of “oh sorry you weren’t in when we tried to deliver your item” which happens a lot as im not home in that day time.

The second reason I want that is I don’t have to explain every little random thing I buy to the missus that way, she orders so much random Junk and I don’t give her any trouble over it, I order 1 cable of ebay I get 20 questions etc ;)

I just wonder, planning a pirate career, will I be able to take over ships of my victims? It would be even more interesting if those victims were alien. Will I be able to sell prisoners (like in a Privateer)? Will I be able to capture another player character and demand a ransom?

I wanna know about dubbing / voiceovers. Perfect would be have every conversation dubbed. I am good with synthetic voice, they are nowadays pretty accurate. I must point out Knights of The Old Republic, where if you have dialogue with various species they talk in their language (making some noise, but with clear intonation) and you read subtitles. It is very natural and more imersive than just read block of texts. That beepy typing sound while letters appear is not enough.

I know that in WC or Freelancer there is little of written text messages and all dialogues dubbed. I think Black Ops had briefing without voice over. I would like to know what will Star Citizen be like?

  55. Avatar of JayS JayS says:

I have a simple but important question:
What kind of damage model can we expect?

What i’d like to see in the final game:
    - Visual hit feedback (glowing shields and debries breaking off).
    - Different components of capital ships to target and disable separately (engine, turrets, landing bay on carriers, etc.)
    - Holes in armor plates.
    - Broken off parts of smaller spaceships.
    - Wrecks of large capital ships.
    - Holes/deformations on capital ships from rockets/torpedos.

The last one is problematic, because a player can walk inside a capital ship and the heigh level of detail there. But i’ve seen some technical papers from DICE of how the Frostbite 2 engine is doing that.
Also, wrecks are a problem too, because they need to be removed or else would “pollute” the space with time. But that could be resolved by using the wrecks as ressources wich players can salvage.

A lot of the people on here I would say are similar in age to myself (30+) and I think considering the mac platform with the reach of the AppStore would bring a lot more new younger gamers; if you take Galaxy On Fire as an example for success; and to a lesser extent the X-series (as that game is too bloody complicated!).

Young players simply don’t know how good a CR story in a space game can be! This game released to them would blow their minds and prove there is more to shooting guns in Afghanistan or whatever crap FPS are re-peddling these days.

  58. Avatar of Tobias Tobias says:

Chris, you’ve said you plan for the game to have one currency, credits, that can be acquired by either playing the game, or trading real money for credits.

    1. How are you planning to keep the economy stable if people can just create excessive amounts of currency out of thin air by paying for it?
    2. How do you plan to regulate Credits to prevent people from using the offline / modding tools to just spawn billions of credits for themselves either by editing mission rewards or using a normal memory editor?

  59. The FAQ mentioned the physics is Newtonian. But for the videos we see, there doesn’t seem to be back thrusters and the main thruster is always firing, that should, in Newtonian physics, result in constant acceleration! A truly realistic spaceship will only accelerate to a desired velocity, then turn off the main engine.

I also think the art team should look no further from Nexus The Jupiter Incident for the main engine effect, I think it’s superior than the effect currently shown.

    • You should see my previous posts about physics in the the forums (yes I know if we had a search feature it would help! That’s coming with new forum software that we are in the process of integrating but carefully so we don’t blow things up :-) )

We will add my answers to the FAQ but essentially the physics are 100% correct and do everything you say. Its just that the visuals don’t represent what is going on in the simulation as that actually didn’t look very good as the thrusters / engine were dark most of the time and would flicker on and off which made the visuals look buggy, so I switched the visual representation to show the delta in rotational velocity rather than actual thrust so you could see which way the thrusters were trying to correct the ship’s thrust.

I’m going to take a pass at tweaking this to better approximate what is going on, but I have to take some liberties or else you’re never going to see the all the cool particle fx and animations as the physics system is only applying micro thrust amounts as there is no drag in space.

On the currency side, this is why the full persistent universe will be hosted by us. We’ll also probably put a cap on how much in-game currency any person can buy in a month to prevent any monetary in-balance.

You should also know that you won’t have an advantage by buying a lot of credits other than cutting down on some of the missions / trading runs you have to fly to upgrade your ship. There is no undefeatable MMO RPG style build in Star Citizen as we don’t have character stats that affect your damage. Instead your skill as a pilot is key. In addition the ship design / abilities is very rock, paper, shotgun so every build of ship has a weakness. And in case you’re worried that we’re going to make the basic missions boring to encourage you to buy credits; We’re not! trading and flying missions are the core of the open world experience. They’re the fun parts and there is no way I am going to deliberately nerf them to encourage people to pay Zynga style. Its a big reason I’m building this game outside the publisher system.

      • re: physics

In the forum we were discussing about the G-forces, and how or what we should expect since it’s in space an all, but we then realized if any of it were real, then the Pilot will just be a splat of red goo at the back of the cockpit when you go into a jump point.

So, with that in mind like every good Sci-Fi novel the problem is “solved” with the “Inertia Dampener Sub System” and then we proceeded to speculate what if we can damage/destroy the Inertia Dampener, then what will the effect be in during the dog fight combat.

Will the Pilot black out, get Red Vision until the ship slows down to a safe speed, or what.

What’s your view on this Chris?

  60. I’m curious as to how “hardcore”, in lack of a better term, this game will be.

I’m thinking in comparison to EVE in particular.
I played that game a couple times, but the one thing that really puts me off are the griefing style of gameplay.

This is especially frustrating when you are a trader, where someone are waiting at a jump gate to shoot down some poor transport ship just so they can steal their cargo.

I had some guy join the corp I was in once, for no other reason than to shoot me down without getting attacked by the security forces.
He was not even interested in my cargo, just to kill me for the fun of doing so, and in doing so I lost almost everything I had worth about 2 billion ISK or 6 months of work.
And when I contacted support the would not reimburse me, and I was left with the impression that they not only support this type of gameplay but actually encourage it.

So my question is how will such things be in this game?
Its not that I’m against there being pirates that steal your cargo, but I would hate to have this turn into another EVE like girefing game.

Good luck devving the game guys it looks great so far! My plegde of € 200,- is not yet attached to my account, I have done it from the backup site. So hopefully tomorrow / this week it is there! Any idea when the syncing will be complete?

“Can you estimate the system requirements for Star Citizen?

There will be a lot of optimization in the next 24-months, plus the usual fast pace of technology, so it is hard to say absolutely. At the moment you will be able to play it on a dual core PC with a GTX 460 or greater and 4GB of system memory. If you’re running an i7 2500, 2600, 2700 or better with a GTX 670 or greater then the stars are the limit! Since the game is built on CryEngine, their system requirements will stay roughly the same as ours.

Do you plan to integrate bounty board in the game mechanics for mercenaries/bounty hunters?

  63. I don’t know if this has been asked yet, but what will the game include as far as walking around goes. I know this is a space sim game, but i think it would be cool to be able to get out of your ship and walk/ run around on a capital ship, station, and/ or planet and be able to interact with stuff. Building stuff like housing and factories could also influence the in-game economy.

Overall i’m very impressed with what i’ve seen and read already and i can’t wait till this comes out. Then again i can so that i can get an uber computer just for this game. ^.^

I played Black Prophecy recently and the biggest problem I had with it was you never really felt like you were exploring the universe. There was basically a space station you started at that was like a quest hub, you’d accept the quest, then be teleported to the area where you had to kill x number of enemies etc. Once you were done you’d jump back, then rinse and repeat.

I’m just hoping that you guys are setting up something that’s more akin to Freelancer where you had to travel through each sector to each jump gate in order to jump to the next sector to get stuff done.

Fully Simulated Planetary (Re)entry / Atmospheric dog fighting:

First I want to say THANK YOU for believing as strongly as you do in this project. I’m sure the game will be well worth it for everyone.

I have questions about the main planets we may be visiting in the game. Namely, planets with an atmosphere similar to Earth (M-class for my S.T. fans).
    (1) Will I be able to pilot the ship INTO these types of planets from outer space into the atmosphere, re-entry flames and all, down to particular landing sites? or will there just be a loading segment when I approach the planet? I haven’t seen to many games where simulated planetary entry (re-entry) happens, and it would be ******* sweet if you guys made it so.

Also, if the answer to the first paragraph is yes to fully simulated planetary entry, then that would mean there will be some sort of “sky” to fly through.
    (2) Would it be possible to make some dogfighting missions take place in these skies within the planets atmosphere? I certainly don’t mind fighting in space, but it would be a nice visual change of pace from time to time. Not to mention an opportunity for some really ******* sweet battle situations.

I can imagine being a military fighter, chasing a pirate into the atmosphere of a planet. I’m blasting, he’s dodging, and we have to stop for a few seconds when both of our ships are engulfed in a flaming ball of fire as we descend into the skies. The scene goes from the blackness of space to a sunny blue sky with crystal waters waaay down below. The physics are slightly altered and the sound of the jets and lasers change a bit since we’re no longer in a vacuum, and as I finally blast the wing off the pirate’s ship, smoke billows out and it explodes, breaking apart and falling down below the clouds. Then I just sonic boom my a** out of there before I get in trouble with the local police…

    …*sigh…

While I appreciate the answer to the citizen cards question it still doesn’t answer one specific aspect.

If I choose the “Come Fly with Me” package will my in-game character have a Silver Citizen Card? Or will that character start with a generic basic citizen card?

Meaning, are the citizen cards just out of game fluff or do they have some sort of impact in game?

  70. I have watched that trailer more times than I care to count and are just equally impressed every time.
I think that trailer, and the music, are absolutely stunning and I just love watching it.
It almost fees as if I an actually there.

Now I have some question related to the Teaser trailer thats out now.

    1. Are the graphics of the trailer how the actual graphics in the game will be?
The graphics in the trailer are great, especially when you do the flyby of the carrier.
I hate it when games have state of the art cinematic, only to have crappy almost cartoonish ingame graphics.
I would love to play a game that has cinematic like graphics, instead of the crappy console like graphics, even if it means I have to upgrade my computer

    2. How will the ingame music be?
The music in the trailer are in my personal opinion just perfect for the trailer, and would love to have music that gives me the feeling that I’m living in this majestic universe and not just playing a game.

Question about Enviroments in Star Citizen:

One of the key elements that set Freelancer apart was the drastically different enviroments you could find in any given sector.
Unlike most space sims, space never felt empty. What you saw in each sector was there for you to visit. In most space sims they use gorgeous backgrounds showing planets, nebulas and so on. But they’re just there for looks.
    So question is.
Will Star Citizen go towards the sort of “filled” with content sectors or go the empty space route like most space sims out there?

Long winded question (and I have not scoured the forums to see if it has been asked. Sorry for my laziness!)

Will there be ways of earning credits that don’t necessarily involve flying? For instance, say my friend discovers a jump point, and we find rich deposits on the other side. I say “Let’s keep this jump a secret until we get our own mining operation in place!”

I buy the equipment, hire a convoy to haul it and a work force to set it up and run it. Now I’m building stockpiles of iron ore, some precious stones, and something else . . . calcium, maybe. I don’t want to haul this out myself, but I have some buddies who need work, so I set up a contract with some buyers and hire my friends to do my hauling. In the meantime, one of those friends organizes the rest of the group into a profitable trucking company. He leases an office at my mining facility and earns his money by dispatching his employees.

Along the trade route, another guy sees that the convoys going back and forth need parts and supplies, so he purchases a carrier and parks it mid-way, selling parts and supplies with a healthy margin.

Ahh, but some jerk from two systems over gets wind of this, and figures that those expensive shipments of parts heading to the half-way ship are gonna be easy pickings, so he and his raiding party start pin-pricking the traffic, because we’re far enough out that UEE isn’t going to come chase him down. Now I need hired guns to protect my pal’s convoys, otherwise he’s going to pull out and get an account with someone else.

I’m sure you can see where this leads to more immersion.

Also, would it be possible for players to become elected officials. Obviously, they would only have authority over certain matters, but if I know that one of the candidates is being paid by my rival from the next system to put extra taxes in my exports, I’m gonna pay a lot of attention. This could easily turn into a conflict between two systems, and I’m sure that not all corps are going to be above-board in how they deal with competitors who bribe politicians. Again, more immersion.

I realize that this risks veering away from the core, which is flying, but the level of immersion easily goes skyward. And, for those who want to play in this universe, but aren’t terribly good flyers, it would be a way to be immersed without getting shot up all the time.

    Just some thoughts. Thanks!

I have a question, is there a chance the DRM free version of this game will be on GOG.com?

    • GOG dont sell new releases, they sell older games and classics.
If you look at the site you will see that most games they sell are from the 80′s and 90′s, but I have not see any game with a release date later than 2005 there

Dont expect to see this game there for a very long time if at all.

I just pledged. Looks awesome, looks with Mount & Blade: Warband in space (with dramatically better graphics). M&B:W is my favourite game these days because awesome single player sandbox campaign with player skills determining outcome in the action. So many delicious mods too. So if Star Citizen can be like that, I’m gonna love it!

While I’m on space sims, I tried and detest Eve Online. Ugh! It’s not a game, it’s a job. Boring, repetitive, but you have to pay rather than get paid! Please don’t be like Eve Online!

I’ve been wondering for the last few years, “why are there no more games like Elite and Wing Commander: Privateer?” Well, looks like there still isn’t one, but there will be in 2 years. Fantastic!
