Poll: Who Will You Be?

The last few polls have helped us quite a bit in shaping the funding campaign and we’re grateful that you’ve provided us with that feedback… but now it’s time to get back to something much more important: helping us figure out what game you want to pal! So go ahead and tell us what role you’re most looking forward to playing in Star Citizen.

Will you defend the frontiers as an Imperial soldier, chart unexplored star systems, trade exotic foods across the systems… or maybe eschew citizenship entirely of the life of a pirate or smuggler? And if you think we’re forgetting something, say so in the comments! The great thing about an open-universe Privateer-style game is that people can make their own way… and we want to offer as much support in that regard as possible.

What role are you most looking forward to playing in Star Citizen?

I chose other since i will (try to) be a mix of some of the options =)

Explorer with a hint of Smuggling/Trading Until my creation of YUNO-Corp is possible, oh and we can’t forget the pew pew :D

    • Avatar of Leftcoast Leftcoast says:

I think people will be more explorer than they think. As much as I like everything on the whole list, I can’t help but explore in open world games. Plus, it’s fun to get a feel for the environment then do what you like the most. To my delight it sounds like this will be a great mix.

    • Avatar of Mr Pete Mr Pete says:

      YUNO Corp?
Can I get some shares? Or a nice’n'comfy seat in an office with great view over some nice valley dirtside?

I’ll definitely explore at every possible chance. And the money for that with my usual mix of trading and trading-without-taxes…

      • Avatar of Farris Farris says:

YUNO Corp , will most likely be selling shares at some point haha
Or hire minimum wage employees, because YUNO Corp is a Mega Corp in it’s heart and soul :D

And yeah tbh from a game standpoint Exploration + “trading without taxes” sounds like it should go hand in hand, because “Liberating” stuff from ship-wrecks and such sounds like something that would be frowned upon, if you were selling it through normal channels, that and alien tech would probably fetch nice prices without taxes, If you know what I mean ;)

  3. Avatar of Donik Donik says:

Explorer at first, until I figure out what I really enjoy the most.

    • Avatar of Koah Koah says:

Yeah, this is my mode as well. Explore a bit and enjoy the peace and wonders that space travel has to offer before finding my niche in either transport (legal), information gathering, remote mining, and the like.

  4. picking other in the right side poll gives an error. Doing it in the poll in this article works.
Picked other as I will give all the options a shot…

  5. Avatar of Manoekin Manoekin says:

    Imperialistic religious zealot

  6. Avatar of Petteri Petteri says:

Explorer first, then trader/smuggler. I’m interested in the stealthy way to fly!!

  7. Avatar of Kajisan Kajisan says:

Hah, well this is my thing you know..exploring the space..trading..only legal stuff you know haha..oh damn..they found me. Jayne, Wash..on the bridge, someone must fly this old good lady!!

  8. Avatar of Aggiekev Aggiekev says:

Explorer. Because I’ll explore all the possibilities. ;)

  9. i would like to see something along the lines of Captain or Fleet admiral aside from the soldier thing . as being in command can be exiting especially playing this game online with friends

  10. FYI, I couldn’t make the Poll work under Chrome, for some reason, but it worked fine under Firefox.

  11. I kind of see myself being a Bounty Hunter part time, and a trader part time, but those are mainly to pay the bills for exploring. :-D

  12. Avatar of Ladwin Ladwin says:

Trader or smuggler, so explorer too.

  13. I think I’ll be switching between being a Merc(and I mean Merc in the sense of legal contracting)/Bounty hunter and Trader/explorer. Shooting stuff one moment and trading valuable stuff that I found in space the next. ^^

  14. Avatar of ChrisT ChrisT says:

My vote goes for Mercenary. Looking for someone to do combat for you? Someone to protect you and your goods? For the right price I’m your man.

  15. Avatar of Mark Durant Mark Durant says:

I´m mostly looking forward serving in Squadron 42 but in my freetime I would like to explore the universe and do a little bit of trading, it´s always good to have some money on the bank.

  16. Avatar of Breaker Breaker says:

Professional Soldier that does Mercenary work on the side ;) But man, I do love exploring, too…

  17. Avatar of Korai Korai says:

I chose Explorer – the Unknown draws my curiosity be it for Beauty or eerie Alien drifting hulks to venture into

I also like the idea of heading up my own Squadron setup in some kinda base I find and restore to its former glories. I rather like the leaning of being raiders of enemy space striking key targets and reaping the rewards of alien tech before making our getaway. Our Base partially surviving through trade back to civilisation of interesting items and other unusual valuable commodities that are hard to get in our home regions of space.

Not part of any military, but doing a strong group of survivors who like the freedoms and opportunities the frontiers of space bring.

This is how I am going to play and would welcome any of a like mind to join with me when the time comes ~_^

  18. Avatar of Razeng Razeng says:

I picked industrial because i like to produce things, but in Freelancer I definitely enjoyed being a pirate (on a server with really great RPG-Community), too.
So maybe i want to choose to be an evil business mogul :D

But I’m interested in the harvesting and exploring facets, too. If the harvesting doesn’t end up like: Push button, wait x-seconds, yay got some ore. Never saw a game where you needed to control your drill(ing laser) to maximize your output. Or one where you were punished for your stupidity, e.g. trying to harvest from a gas nebular with a laser.

But if I think further it will end up in wanting to be a bit of everything. :D
In other words: See the full game, test out the possibilities which are the most interesting to me and combine them.
Hmm that’s somehow the wrong approach. I think I have yet to learn that this game isn’t finished and I’m able to share my ideas/visions with you xD

    • Avatar of Keziah Keziah says:

You and me both, kid ;)

Even though I didn’t pick it, it pleases me that almost a third of respondents are choosing “Explorer”. That was my favorite thing to do in Freelancer. After my friends and I had gone to Rheinland and gotten Eagles, we set out to get alignment with pirates for their ships and then just went exploring … finding new jump holes and systems.

Exploring is absolutely one of the things I want most from this game, but I also want to own an asteroid base so…

  19. Avatar of travists travists says:

I chose trader, but I hope do do a little pirate slaying and may run a few patrols between/during cargo runs. Exploring is n option, but likely wont do much of it. And I won’t pass up the opportunity to snag a passing rock if I’ve got the room. And too all those explorers: I’ll sell you fuel near the frontier if I can at a “reasonable” price

  20. Smuggling is the most exciting thing you can do in a persistent universe. Especially when the rewards are reasonable and travel distances long.

  21. Avatar of Raven Raven says:

You forgot to add a All of the Above option. :)

  22. Avatar of RT RT says:

I’d personally like to have the ”option” to be all stealthy (as an example: I’d have to have a smaller ship or a really really advanced one but i COULD, remain TOTALLY undetected should I have the wish.
OR if I want my Constellation to be a tank that can withstand almost anything and be a head-on attack vessel I can accoplish that.
The role(play) choice is going to vary anyway either a little or a lot, from time to time ;)

  23. Avatar of Retro Nick Retro Nick says:

I chose Bounty Hunter, but I want to try my hand at other things as well.

  24. Avatar of LightMonk LightMonk says:

    other
I will make a mix of Combat-Roles and Exploration

  25. Avatar of BoMbY BoMbY says:

I’ll be a pirate with a covered identity as bounty hunter … ;)

  26. Avatar of Lukhar Lukhar says:

Hard to choose, but there should be enough content for each role.

  27. Avatar of Quark Quark says:

With all the players wanting to be an Explorer, you might want to consider having temporary systems and jump routes.

  28. Avatar of Trigger Trigger says:

Assuming we will have more than one character, I’d be playing several different roles. Pretty much the same idea within the roles, just different rules regarding them.

    Primary: Soldier
    Secondary: Mercenary
    Tertiary: Mixture of an Explorer/Trader

  29. Avatar of natecook natecook says:

Picked smuggler, because I see myself starting out with legit trading, then graduating to something a little more difficult and rewarding. That, and being like Han Solo in my RSI Constellation.

  30. Avatar of Ibanez Ibanez says:

I want to be Indiana Jones in Space ! … with a short temper and a deadly trigger finger. So something along Explorer (which I’ve chosen) but still with epic battles.

  31. Avatar of Net Net says:

I miss Freelancer (or just more than one:-))

  32. Avatar of RedFalcon RedFalcon says:

So many options, I can’t choose one! I’ll eventually try all of them but probably start as an explorer (I want to name a system after my wife), then do mercenary/bounty hunting, followed by a tour in the military.

  33. Avatar of Eric Nava Eric Nava says:

All of the above, in varying degrees most likely. I’d redo this poll tbh, and have people rank in what order they will play 1-10 to get more accurate data.

  34. Avatar of Shepard Shepard says:

I voted Soldier, but that doesn’t really define everything that interests me in SC. I’d definitely do some trading, exploring, mining, crafting. I’ll try to keep my dogfighting skills honed but I’ll also be willing to explore other game features. I think I will be FREELANCER. There you go! Includes everything :) .

  35. Avatar of Boraxx Boraxx says:

Voted Other: Combination of hired bounty hunter and explorer, with a hint of trading, cuz hey I’m going that way anyhow so I might as well haul some (illegal) goods

  36. Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

    Other.
Freelancer – I like to have options.

  37. Mh… Trader, Cargo Runner, Explorer, Miner… those are all choices I’d take. And I agree with some of the previous posters. This should have been a multiple-choice poll where you rank the activities in regards to how important they are on your agenda, instead of having to flat out chose only one.

  38. Hmm…I guess a proper answer from me would be:

    All of the above?

  39. A little bit of everything I guess. First finish the Squadron 42 campagne to get to know the game and then further as a bounty hunter with some smuggling/trading and mining for the funds.

  40. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Scientist. You are the captain of a scientific ship. You will be part of a team who will go through the galaxy to investigate misteries, or deal with terraforming or “Project Genesis” – creation of a planet from nothing. You will have to improve your labs with different specialists to achieve your objectives. You also have to be able to defend yourself. You could be away in a unknown space and having to create some kind of new weapon to deal with a new enemy and to due that, having to getting material and making research. You have to send people to planets to colonize or to help their habitants. I mean, all that stuff that we saw in the STar Trek series and movies :D And mainly. The space is unknown. What is more fascinating about the space is the secrets that we have there that could bring evolution to our society. The questions if God exists, or who we are and what our purpose. We should be able to play in some role in order to live this experience to find new things and discover new misteries or creating new weapons, etc. etc., and not just living as common people, just fighting, doing trades and so on, and just knowing by journals of the discoveries that wouldn’t be limited to navigate to a unknown space, but really having misteries there to be solved, and questions to be answered, civilization to deal with and so on.

  41. Avatar of Horschtele Horschtele says:

I’ll go into politics. Vote for me!

  42. Avatar of Tseuro Tseuro says:

Independent ‘freelancer’ at the moment, do a little this, a little that and get paid for it. I love a good brawl/dogfight so you’ll most likely find me on the outer edges of civilised space. It’s all about the survival of the fittest, let Darwin sort out the rest :)

  43. Avatar of Frank Frank says:

    Miner , Trader , Industrialist , Explorer

  44. Avatar of Judicator Judicator says:

I voted “Other”. While it’s nice to act as a scpecific class/social category I find it way more interesting to have the freedom to do what I want at the time. So I’d like to live the experience just as I like being able to switch job to my liking.

  45. I may have missed this info/question in a FAQ somewhere, but what are the possibilities of having more than one Character &/or Ship?

Would I be best served having to accounts & two pledges = 1 fighter type ship & 1 explorer type ship? Or have you already fielded this question/considered this request?

I’m very curious because I haven’t pledge yet – in large part because I can’t decide which ship I want and I keep wondering IF there might be Backer-level that splits it down the middle so-to-speak on a ship or character-level = but would cumulatively consolidate (acknowledge) my overall “Citizen-ship Level” together?

That, and I’m currently a semi-distraught (upset, sad, etc.) “City of Heroes” Player & being an “Alt-a-holic” has been part of my online gaming “identity”/experience for 7+ years now… The idea of focusing on just one Avatar/Character isn’t a Deal-breaker for me but I’m wondering if having Two Characters (as Siblings or maybe Clones? or something = maybe sharing Last-name/Surname) would be a plausible & “Dev acceptable/approved” way to go at this?

  46. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Special Operations. You should have to be part of Special Opertations, not Squadron 42, but operations where you go solo, behind enemy lines. Something like the idea and responsiblity of a Spectre of the Mass Effect world. Something like a Jedi, Pilgrim, with some special ability – maybe achieved with hard training. And why not, you shoul also live as a Traitor, Infiltrator, becomgin part of some gang or even army, but just to make sabotages or to reveal their plans. We also see the traitors in the Chris Roberts games, but would be great also to live as the traitor, maybe for good reasons, like you had your family kidnapped by the enemy and you have to become a double agent, or they will be killed, etc.

  47. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Fugitive! You should have the possibility to live as a fugitive. You were convicted by a crime that you are inocent. But for some accident you become a fugitive and had to go through the galaxy to try to prove your inocence, at the same time that people from both sides, good guys and bad guys, are pursuiting you.

  48. i’ll start as a soldier, but then move to soldier for hire. I figure a Merc slot will always be needed. I’ll stay close to the law though, but not necessarily law abiding.

  49. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Assassin! You should have the possibility to live as an assassin. Hired by people from government or even from gangs, your role is simple. Find and kill the person that someone hired you to kill. It would include to board another ship and kill someone inside there without been noticed, or killing someone that is in a base or a planet, besides the usual killing of destroying the ships.

  50. Avatar of Foxtrot Foxtrot says:

Is there going to be room for actual smugglers? I think it would be cool if there were black markets on core UEE systems which bought certain illegal goods at high prices, but getting them there was tricky…

  51. Avatar of Sargoreth Sargoreth says:

I picked Bounty Hunter, but only to pay the bills for exploration like @Rear Admiral Crazed Hatter. Space is really really big, and I don’t see being able to explore profitably, but it will be what I like doing best…plus pewpew is fun too. I don’t know if id go after PCs tho..I like ratting

  52. Avatar of G44TH G44TH says:

Was torn between Miner, Soldier and Explorer. I chose the last.

  53. Avatar of Lozenger Lozenger says:

Why so little love for mining people? :D though to be fair, a mix of mining, exploration and trading will be my personal preference, perhaps multiple radio buttons like the previous poll would work better?

  54. Miner.
I love to hang in space, pointing guns at rocks and turning them into something useful rather than a space-filler. And even get money for it? Sweet!
Always wanted to be a fighter pilot but got my lungs killed by smokes, Navy said I would faint at 3g, let alone anything higher.
I just have to remember to open the cabin time up to time to vent out cigarette’s smoke. Can’t quit that fraking thing.
Oh, and must remember to watch the radar for all these scumbags thinking a mining ship is an easy target. Not if I know soon enough. Then just *punch* onto a jump drive and I’m gone with all the cargo. Unless they’re cloaked…

  55. Avatar of Teh Emprah Teh Emprah says:

Alot of mercenary work, though I’ll probably do some other things too.

  56. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

A owner of a ship with entertainment and whores, slaves, to travel to the galaxy winning credits selling these services, discovering new talents :D and so on…
It won’t need to be porn, but sexy girls. You should be able to fight of course, against cops and gangs, and you should be able to win credits selling information for both sides (information that your best whores achieve) :D

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

so…you want to be a space pimp? o_O

      • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

I believe that are things that we usually had in the worlds of many games, bars, places of entertainment and whores. So, I think taht would be fun you own one of these places, even been a Luxury Ship or a base. I am thinking that would be more cool if we have not just all those things that we already had in the previous games, like Privateer, Freelancer, Wing Commander, but new things and new roles. I will love this game because I am a fan of everything that Chris created so far, but I’d like to see inovation coming, not just the same thing that we saw before with better graphics.

  57. Avatar of Eddie Eddie says:

    Soldier all the way.
Someone needs to do something about those (currently) 247 pirates.
Hopefully be stationed on a big carrier run by a GM.

  58. Avatar of cramm789 cramm789 says:

I choose industrialist because it seemed the most unique of the choices. I actually would enjoy all of those I think except miner… that group sounds boring

  59. I have to admit, I’m hoping I can build up a fat pile of cash to hire mercs to fly with me, it’ll make me feel much more comfortable. So all y’all mercs out there, be expecting calls. ;-)

  60. i love to be a miner ^^. asteroids are beautifull

  61. I voted for “soldier”. I think CIG-Corp and CR will already make that more than just a simple pilot. I want to be the captain of a capital ship, standing at the bridge and commanding a fleet on an attack. That would be my dream come true. I would have voted for Industrialist too but we can only click one option :-/

  62. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

I am wondering about relationships. Regardless your role, you should be able to have relationships built in the galaxy. You could have ways to met people (girls from my point of view), even building a family (that you also would fight to protect them, and at this case, depending in what side they are, you will chose to fight for one side or another).

      • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Well… I saw in the trailer… I am not dead… And I am a Space Sim! :D Kidding… But it’s one of the great things of Mass Effect in other games. I do not see why not having this kind of thing in our world. If is something to be immersed I think that this sense of having relationships and having family would become this universe more real.

        • I guess u might do this if you find a virtual partner who would agree.. Not NPC, but other human i mean

This game is not a ‘Sim’ sim as far as i understood – not even close to Mass Effect – most (if not all) major situations will happen between REAL (well, virtual) people

          • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Relationship is part of the society. We should have this at this universe, if the objective is to be more and more immersive. And NPC’s, we should have a lot of them, not a few. Because a game only with virtual players could become empty, depending of the day that you can play, or even too much difficult to atract people to play it, because you always will be killed by those that have the chance to play all the time and are best players. So, NPC’s are essential in my opinion, and I am pretty sure that we’ll have a lot of them at this universe (more than real players I suppose). But I guess that if we’d have this it could work to have a relationsihp with NPC’s or real players (or both, at the same time :D )

  63. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Journalist! Your ship will have not just guns but machines to take photographs, cameras and stuff. You go through the galaxy as a reporter, been part of fights, discoveries, pursuiting celebrities, etc. Always with the objective to become the first to sell news, or creating articles to be shared with all in the galaxy.

  64. Since there is no real character selection im think we have the same ideas all around… just fly ur ship and see where you end up.. be it running cargo for a corp, delivering illegal goods from the outer rim, or waiting on the darkside of a moon for that dumb freight capt to wander helplessly by…

Be it any of the above this game just keeps sounding more and more like one of my childish dreams of living out starwars dogfights or firefly type exploration…

  65. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

I am suggesting a lot of ideas that, I think, wouldn’t need to be available in the first release of the game, but launched later in the weekly updates. One that would be great is becoming a not-human. Been from another race, with different perspective (and even powers), with a different culture and values, and of course, alien ships!

  66. Avatar of Seggface Seggface says:

I will definitely start in the army, after service go to explore (mixed with a bit of trade/merc).

  67. Avatar of Beachlight Beachlight says:

Whatever I be I hope it will be possible to have strength in the game as an individual. A lone wolf. And not for groups or fleets to have a persistent upper hand.
There should be some kind of weakness in numbers effect, that means an individual can achieve something extra in space, whether its stealth or speed I don’t know, or ability to access a certain sanctuary.
In this life on Earth if you have the world against you, no matter where you go eventually you will be on the end of a long range missile or bullet. So I need a place to hide, and ability to travel to and from that hidden area, and spec a ship that is based around evasion.

  68. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

A game designer! You should be create some ideas for Star Citizen, traveling from places where Cloud Imperium is hosting some game conference, and you would post this idea, selling it to Cloud Imperium for some credits. And if they liked, you win the credits and some recognition when the idea was actually implemented in the Star Citizen world. It would work like we are doing here today, but it would be during the gameplay, as I told, and if the idea was new, the Cloud Imperium Ship or base would pay game credits to you, or even, giving you some reward or naming. I think that woudl be a very fun way to make people help giving ideas making Star Citizen an amazing world that people would love to know that they traleveled to a location in the world, provided the idea to the team, and been recognized in the whole community for that new thing created later in the game. All this in-game and not by using a forum (that still could be used for that of course), but this in-game way would be more fun :D

    • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Just an addendum. Maybe CLoud Imperium Ship/Base could ask you to show that your ideas has value. So, before presenting to CI Ship/Base, you would have to find people in the galaxy, sharing your idea and asking for crowd funding (votes actually). With this votes, you present your idea to the CI Ship/Base, and it would be a good way to show that your idea has value and later could be implemented in the game, so CI could return to you the reward or game credits.

  74. Avatar of NorrFrost NorrFrost says:

I want to explore, some mining, and trading, maby mercenary and even smuggling..
Can`t wait to take a closer look at the FreeLancer..

  75. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Michael Shumacker of the Space! I heard this idea in another forum, and that would be something good. You have the possibility of participate os Space runs. We should have some famous circuits in the galaxy and even championships, categories and stuff like that. You became famous in the galaxy because you win the championship,e tc. We also should have runs with less rules. Additionally, another idea would be the role of a gladiator, traveling the galaxy to participate of tournaments where the last survivor wins. I heard both ideas in another forum and I would vote in both :D

  76. Avatar of Lazeroon Lazeroon says:

I choose other aswell – most of all, because I can never just settle with one char… and i’d love to do some research/engineering type of work.

  77. Avatar of Drarg Drarg says:

Junker – with a tough ship designed for the job, largish cargo hold, reasonable weaponry, decent escape equipment.

  78. I was dead even split between explorer and trader, went with trader

Mining, Trading and Exploring would fit me, all other only when forced to it.
    Won´t die without a bit self-defense.

  80. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Owner of some mechanical shop. I heard that there will be a lot of configurations that you would be able to create in the game to improve your ship. Well… I think that people would be able to become specialists on that, and selling these “tunned packages” or “configurations” so people could just buy it, knowing by the reputance of this person along the galaxy, that it would be a better upgrade, without myself having to do a lot of experiences or combinations. People could win credits this way, selling these services o tunning, with these package combitnations that they created by themselves and tested and know that they are good, for those people that are interested in other things than configure and re-configure your own ship our new ships achieved.

  81. I voted for Other

but I really wanted “All of the above” option
or simply put it “Jack of All Trades” :)

  82. Avatar of djsr djsr says:

I voted Explorer, but i guess it will be a bit of everything. In the beginning maybe more merchant. i usually prefer a more peaceful kind of playing until i have a big ship!

But actually i dont really care what role to play, as long as i can play the open world part at all! Still more than $600000 to go to get that!

  83. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

creatures seller. You should have the possibility to be like a hunter, selling, buying, hunting some creatures along the galaxy, that will be used for many purposes, including as pets. Or you could help also and killing some creatures infection in some ship (like a ship infested even by smart creatures like Predator or similar to those Aliens of the Sigourney Weaver’s movie) :D About that… Would be awesome to have some ships that you found in the galaxy, with people killed or apparently empty, but with things to be discovered, like killer aliens or any other kind of mistery to be solved. Since some boarding stuff will be available, something like that that we saw in many movies or series would be amazing.

    • Avatar of Peregrine Peregrine says:

The career path of Hunter is a great one, but it is totally dependent upon the need for animals.

      • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

I rembember of that big worm of Star Wars movies which Han Solo and his ship was inside. That would be great having some creatures like that capable to be in the space or in asteroids , so we could hunt them of fighting against to survive in some situation. Also we could board ships with animals to get them to our collection, or fighting against an infestation of Aliens Monsters in a delerict ship or in our own ship.

  84. Avatar of Gundersun Gundersun says:

I’m not suggesting that it be a big part of the game, but another role you might consider is that of diplomat/spy. Missions that involve brokering ceasefires, delivering secrets, intercepting enemy communications, establishing trade relations, etc. would be cool. I voted soldier, although, I’m not so sure I’m excited to fly for the United Empire or Earth. They don’t strike me as being a positive force in the universe. If the opportunity comes to fly for a “border” world military group against the UEE, that might be more my speed. C’mon, RSI, give me a revolutionary role!

    • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

That would be an amazing thing. Not been just a pirate, smuggler, or any other kind of criminal, but really part of Rebels, that understand that UEE is not the best thing to be followed, and then, you have this militia to fight against UEE’s and bringing people to fight for your cause.

      • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Just thinking about what ifs. What if we could have an in-game network created and accessed by a rebel alliance that fight against UEE? Then, we could be met in some place in secret that the guys which the NPC’s UEE and their players doesn’t know, to plan and to make attacks, to find more people to join us and things like that. In some point of the game we should be able to be a so powerfull rebellion that you could even win this war and removing UEE from power and creating a different government (which based in some chooses of the system, would be created automatically, this time having NPC’s form our own new government in our side). And later, the defeated could be rebeled themselves, grow up in numbers and achievements so they could set the empire (or another kind of government chosen- with the options provided by the game) again. We definitely would be creating the history in the Universe this way. And I like this idea to going to places to be able to have secret meetings or to create secret basis and things like that.

Imagine: A daring explorer, or merchant on the fringes of the universe has had an unfortunate incident, and has ejected. Their escape pod sends out a distress signal which is picked up at the nearest outpost. You accept the mission and are required to use all of your piloting, and problem solving skills to find the merchant, fight off adversaries, and rescue him/her before they are sucked into a micro black hole.

I would like it this way:
The Galaxy Government enforces every ship manufacturer to implement a secure module into their ships which tracks aggressive behavior towards civilian ships etc. This information would then be transmitted and you are flagged as a pirate and/or pursued by the police. Of course you can obtain some kind of underground non-licensed pirate ship which does not contain such a module – but there’s no insurance which would cover the loss of such a ship. So it would be a high risk, high reward thing. What’s your opinion on that idea?

  98. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Pay attention of the military idea. We are next of the year 3000. People should be more smart than the soldiers of our days. So, people smart do not accept anything that superiors say just because they are disciplined and are going to give their lifes for honor and bulshits like that the military try to put in your head. I would like to see people motivated by flying, to help humanity, but not so dumb to do not question orders or even smart to take their own decisions. I loved Wing Commander I, mainly, because it was less militar and more pilots with their own personality and even visual. The military life in Star Citizen should be more evolved form the military life of today or of our past. PEople evolved and we are about 1000 years ahead! In other words, make it more Wing Commander and less Starlancer (even considering that the missions of STarlancer were very elaborated and fun)!

    • Do you mean Freelancer or Starlance? Cause I’ve never heard of Starlancer before.

        • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Yes. STarlancer was the prequel of Freelancer. Do you remember of the Freelancer presentation which talks about a fight between the Coalition and the Alliance? Well… Starlancer is that fight. A part of that, at least (I started to play it recently after already played WC’s and Freenlancer). It’s a game pretty much like Wing Commander, but without that immersion in terms of characters, which know each other, going to the bar, etc. It’s more a matter of going to the missions and complete them. The strong of the game were the missions, very good challenges, but without a proper history or interactions with the characters, the game lost in immersion. I thought that make sense for that game the military behaviour been like the military is today, because it was the beginning of the space exploration, where the humanity still was only in the Solar System. But for our Star Citizen, which his history wiil start next to 3000, and the humanity went beyond, it does not make sense that military behaviour of the soldiers, almost blind, only thinking in terms of honor, without proper personality. That’s what I asked for a military way more like WC, where the guys have more personality, not afraid to raise questions for the superiors, and doing the service more becasue they want fame or glory or to fly itself than honor and blablabla that the militaries use to motivate their soldiers today (and Starlancer soldiers – pilots – are more like that).

          • As a Combat Disabled Veteran of the US Army, I take great offense to your statements sir.

Soldiers are not blind and do not blindly follow orders. There are those who join to get fame and glory like you state you want…those normally die first in combat. Fame and glory are not things to seek out, and not things that are worth fighting for. Soldiers are encouraged to question and make sure that they understand every single order that is given. The old adage “I was only following orders” does not stand anymore. Blindly following an illegal order makes you just as guilty as the one who gave the order. Soldiers, are just like any other occupation with a hierarchical chain of command. If you are a shelf stocker at your local grocery store, and your boss tells you to go stock the diapers on aisle 3, do you question him? Do you make your own decision to go stock the cheeses? No, you don’t. If you do, you might lose your job. If my Captain told me to go stand watch and defend that intersection, I didn’t question him, because if I did, people may die. But if your boss tells you to go take the money out of the cash register and put it in his car, you’d question that. If my Captain told me to do something illegal, I’ll question it, as I am legally required to do. As a Senior Network Administrator and Communications Specialist, 905 of my orders, were “do your job”. I’m sorry I didn’t question that. I guess I could have decided to..not fix the radio..or not run that network cable. Oh well, opportunity lost I guess.

You talk of wanting to have soldiers out there for the fame and glory. I know, I would be very scared of the soldier beside me going into combat who is there for fame and glory and is not there for those old fashioned things like, honor, self-sacrifice, patriotism, duty and all that “blablabla that the militaries use to motivate their soldiers today”. I fought for my buddies beside me, and for those I left at home; including yourself; and for the ideals and freedoms our country was founded upon; which includes the right to free speech, and your right to have the opinions you stated. That being said, it’s clear to me that you are not in the less than 1% of our nation’s population who has raised their hand and swore and oath to defend her. That is your prerogative, but do not question my intelligence or my honor.

I fought because I love this country and what it stands for. I fought for my family and friends. I fought because it was my duty to stand up for those who cannot, or will not, stand up for themselves. THAT is why soldiers fight. Fame and Glory only get people killed.

Pilots usually fight for glory or the excitement of dogfights and flying, than patriotism. Even in the current days, and in the past, they were always displayed in movies and books (and Wing Commander) with this behaviour. IT seems the usual behaviour of this kind of soldier like we knew from Red Baron and other famous fighters from WW2. Anyway, my suggestions is that on military duty, the soldiers/pilots have more civilian behaviour, like it was in Star Trek. In STar Trek universe, we stil have chain of command, hiearchy, but we didn’t see screams and “ten-huts”, “attention, captain on the deck”, or things like that because considering that they were evolved people, they were disciplined by default. They didn’t need to pass through a military trainging, changing this behaviour to follow screamed orders, and stuff like that which we see in the armies around the world at these days. IT just exist because the people that is brought to the army, are not disciplined, and to achieve that, they learn a uniform way to behave all them from the same way. That’s the reason of “ten-huts” and orders like that. Captain Kirk never said something like that, but his soldiers always followed his orders. They were an humanity evolved with people knowing and following their duty. A military training changing the behave of people does not make sense in an evolved humanity, 1000 years ahead of today, like it will be in Star Citizen.
Sorry if I ofended you, I used wrong words. Maybe because I am not from US (which means that I have a very different thinking about what you said about what your army and whatever army around the world really does). Ithink that we both will have a good world in STar Citizen to found each other and set our differences uh? :D And sorry for what happened to you man! I was a soldier too, just not from the same side than you, but regardless your thinking and my different opinion about the real objectives of the armies of these days, which are not the focus of this forum, anyway, I wish you the best and I hope that we have some good encounters in Star Citizen to fight each other or even been allies ;) It would be a good history for the game huh? We are enemies that discovered that we are just been used for wrong reasons and then we become friends fighting against these bad people that are using our armies for the wrong reasons and their own interests which are not freedom actually ;)

It won’t take long to know what commodities need to go where, and I’ll be working out deals with suppliers and customers to keep the shipments coming and going on schedule. Why does the universe want someone like me? Because I hire two kinds of people: drivers and shooters. You wanna haul? I’ll pay you based on how much you’re hauling, how far you’re hauling it, and how fast you can get it there. You wanna shoot? I’ll hire you to keep my drivers out of trouble and pay you based on how dangerous the route is.

On the flip side, if you’re undercutting me, well, let’s just say I don’t like that. And maybe your drivers will have a hard time getting your shipments to their destinations. And maybe I’ll come into a sudden extra supply to fill the gap, hmm?

My second instinct was saying ‘soldier’, but I agree with what a few people said: when I’m playing Squadron 42, I’m in the military.

Then, there is the mix: Mercenary! I’m still a soldier (of fortune!) and I’m still free to explore. Plus, I love Battletech (boardgame / novels) so i can picture some mercenary units been hired to fight and die in remote locations and even inside the Empire while soldiers fight the Vanduul at the front

  124. Avatar of joakhyn joakhyn says:

  125. Avatar of Mil Mil says:

First instinct was Explorer, too. But if 30% doing that, there will not much to explore left in a very short time. So no career opportunities here.

In the end it will be a mix of Mercenary/Smuggler/Trader depending on the upcoming daily tasks and the money involved. In the end, if enough money can be made, I will be an industrialist looking for new investments.

And Miner… that would be like playing a peasant in the most epic medieval RPG ever… hell no.

Id love if there was a choice or a trial in which you could join the apparent invading AI race. Maybe if RSI monitored and picked certain players through time who could pose a serious threat to all parts of the ‘human empire’ ,,,might make it extra interesting knowing there’s a group of elite players who’s aim is to destroy/threaten the empire/developing economy itself.

  127. As Star Citizen is going to be REAL roleplaying game in the oldschool sense of actually impersonating your character and hopefully involving some really dramatic 42 campaign, i will start from being a soldier.

After campaign is finished and i am on my own i’m gonna be a ‘victim of war’ – successful soldier who got addicted to dogfighting and can’t live without it.

Once on a merc mission he meets a pirate girl and being ready to blast her as he did hundreds of times, he suddenly falls in love with her voice while she was taunting him.. So, feeling really weird but right he turns against his contract and helps this girl to escape..

After dozen of sleepless nights he starts to seek for her, exploring the most dangerous outskirts of the Galaxy.. And when she is found – he joins their pirate clan, becoming their leader in time, laying havoc on merchant fleets and being wanted by half of the ‘loyal’ community..

But the story only begins there….

  128. Since we were only allowed one of the above I had to go with what I thought could encompass most of what I wanted to do.

Mercenary- with a merc mentality you will be employed by companies to raid their rivals (extra cash plus salvage) you will be employed by the military to beef up their lines (dogfighting experience) you will be employed to provide security on convoy or terraforming and exploration missions, and the list goes on.

As a merc I can see myself getting involved in every aspect of the game, and perhaps if things get deep enough, start my own merc corp and hire other players/NPCs to fulfill contracts. The more of us their are the more we can do.

Which actually leads me to a question: Can you have a bounty on your head AND be a bounty hunter at the same time? The player’s focus is to actually coordinate the military forces on a simplified, large scale, piloting the flaggship himself (joining the sweetest battles ;) ).

depending on how large scale navigation works (freely or on set routes), one could try concentrate the fleet on a narrow gate – passage way (if made on routes), effectively leaving a reagion “cut off”, or send a fleet to a planet to create a blockade and actually be an oppressor.

I’ve heard mentions of being able to buy property such as a penthouse apartment. I realize the name Star Citizen pretty much implies that most everything will be space oriented, but I’d like to be able to specialize in the building of infrastructure (communications links, water, power) or more detailed projects such as buildings, bases and full cities — large and small.

I’d like to explore the surface of planets to find suitable locations for various infrastructure, or be able to link mining operations together in hopes of higher production.

I think the poll should have several options you can tick. I would love to be a soldier, but also as a Trader/Industrialist and Explorer.

Military, I just love being a fightr pilot taking off from a carrier with my squad mates, fighting for earth and its freedom. But I am also interested in explorer and a bit of hauling/industry aswell to be honest.

I am looking forward to putting together a squadron of my friends with the expectation that we will be venturing to the far reaches of space and chart unexplored star systems in much the same way that the ‘Pilgrims’ ventured out in Wing Commander. I hope to have not only a support ready flight of dogfighters but also refining/Manufacturing and technology resources on our squadron ships to sustain ourselves and invent as we travel. I cannot wait….

I do not want to play EVE again. It filled the void, not quite, while Wing Commander was off the scene but after 9 years of it I have had enough. This has came as a fresh breath of Air to the genera. I want to explore. I want to meet alien species and have a rich story unfold as I dedicate my time to difficult missions. Missions that do not repeat but rather make you feel like you are climbing a wall. Climbing a wall of game time to get a glimpse of something amazing on the other side, something that has been hidden for years in the mind of the developers and which took until not to be possible. I want to feel lost in the environment, feel like the first person to have seen a certain planet or nebula or species.

The Wing Commander series and spin-off’s managed to create this devotion and immersion that in my quite considerable opinion has never been equalled.

I don’t want to have to work to get anywhere in the game (EVE). Neither do I want to have to pay to see the game (Warcraft). I want the game that gives up everything to me in return for spending hours with it. I don’t need realism, what I need is to get lost in an immersive world and for that I will happy return the favour and pay. This is why I think this game will surpass just about everything else out there. This time we get to create what we want. We have the money and are obviously prepared to hand it over to get what we want.

I chose miner, but will probably delve a bit into all of it. Should have selections for multiple roles. :)

I will hope to serve in the military for awhile to get combat experience and money, but then go off to be a pirate/smuggler/industrialist – I will setup my own illegal drug manufacturing plant somewhere on the far reaches of space

  158. For me, a mix and match of everything I can do while exposed to as little PvP as possible.
