It’ll be a big one.

I would only play star citizen if it was in DX12
Bad idea, everything after 11.1 is going to be Win 8 only (at this point in time). And the rule about Windows releases still holds true
Well, presumably they would also work on windows 9, therefore we’d just ahve to wait 2-8 years for the next windows release before we could play
Actually this so-called rule about Win releases only works if you completely ignore Win2k and NT, which were both excellent, and XP was a step back from 2k. In other words, the “pattern” is just a myth.
The rule is still valid cause NT and 2k were not for the customer and out of row.
2k and NT were not really made for home use so they don’t count in the list. Your Grandparents* are not going to have 2k or NT installed on their never-updated computer.
*(By Grandparents, I’m referring to the stereotypical grandparents. Because obviously your** grandparents are geeks and have both a 2k and NT machine.)
**(By your, I’m writing specifically to the smartass who was going to reply with the preceding information.)
Windows 2k was easily available and most power users very quickly ported over to it, so it really became less of a business class OS and more of a workstation OS in practicality, as it was light-years ahead of 95/98.
Thanks for putting your stars. My grand parents definitely DO HAVE windows 2k and NT.
Maybe they were not “made” for home use use as such, but they were still readily available for consumers. I had 2k in my gaming machine until I bought a new rig when Vista was released. And btw, 2k had much better backwards compatibility than XP: all 95/98 games worked in 2k while XP had problems. My point remains that the “pattern” only works by choosing suitable facts from history.
… win7 and vista both use 11.0 so you have to count win7 out of this argument too. also win7 will be patch to support most features of 11.1 already announced and they are really the only features that matter for games.
I think he was kidding anyway.
The thing is – whatever is DirectX – limits you 100% to Windows.
If we want to have a future where Windows will not be able to dicate the Game industry what to do how, then we need to also use other things – like OpenGL. I’d love to see SC running under Linux. Imagine:
1. All system resources stripped down so the OS only requires 120MB to run. All the rest is available for the game (already doing that with Steam).
2. No Anti Virus (takes you 20% to 30% system resources). What a waste.
3. The developers have free source code access to Linux to check bugs. And if something is really not fixable – can even get an answer from linus Torvalds. Has Bill Gates ever answered one of your questions ? Weill – Linus still does when I ask!
4. I don’t have to pay for an OS – that is inefficient !
That is the curse to be linked to a OS Manufacturer …
The limitation is not without reason.
Think about all the different hardware around (eg all the different GPU types).
And what’s with Cry Engine?
Linux? Graphic Engine? Hardware? Playable in 2 Years?
That does not fit together.
And what’s this thing with 20-30% ressources for an AV? If this really happens on your PC, something is wrong.
What do you think, DirektX is made for?
Find out – and you’ll know why it’s needed.
Interface, huh.
Don’t worry, he still lives in ’90s thinking that there are no viruses on Linux, Windows eats so much resources that you cannot do anything and crashes every 30 minutes. lol
Wrong folks.
The thing is – that I’d like to have plattform I can play the game on, without having to patch it all along.
The AV stuff is something I know quite well, as I had worked at a company that did exactly that. And the 30% Impact on the system resources – is something that we have experienced quite often (reason I don’t use any AV on my dedicated gaming RIG which runs Linux and Windows BTW – Steam has started the Linux games …).
DirectX may have been made as an abstraction layer – right, however what Microsoft did with it is a mess. Sorry – so many Problems that do exist are a shame.
I don’t expect it to be playable in 2 years. I just want it to be playable under Linux sometime in the future. that’s all, so I can dump Windows all together (And yes – I answered using a Linux machine BTW
) …
PS: I do not live in the 90ies. You guys do – as you still believe in the Windows world …
Windows is out … Windows is dead. Microsoft had a chance to do things right, but they are only money driven – so they actually did focus on the wrong stuff …
Viruses under Linux do exist – yes, as concept work …
But this is something you guys under windows don’t know, do ya ??? Viruses are part of your day to day experience right ???
@sky
tell me of a single virus for Linux that still works
Linux has had a few viruses (so few that they are seen as curiositys instead of threats because due to the way Linux works (you do not have 100% access to the system files is one of them – unless you run a program as root but you NEVER run a program as root) they cannot do much anyway) but all of them no longer work on most distributions due to the vulnerabilities being patched
another famous argument for Linux haters is that it has a small market share
but if you look at servers and specifically web servers (servers that are connected to the internet 24/7) Linux has the largest market share
it is also common to have a Linux web or mail server that has not been turned off or restarted for over a year due to the way it deals with updates (and if you use ksplice you can patch the kernel in the memory and never have to restart the server)
windows servers… you will be lucky to have one last a week as windows solution to everything is to restart or crash (at least the restart bit is correct) and updates require a restart
i’m currently trying to find a website and so far failing…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware
you will see under threats a few say they only targeted this or that distribution
this is because viruses for Linux have to be more tailor made for the distribution than windows
Linux mail servers however do need an anti virus program to scan for windows viruses (stop it before it reaches you)
lol Moffo have you ever used Nortons its the most resource hungry AV ever and the most useless ever to hit the market, it takes hold of your machines and turns it to shit hogging over 50% of resources for its self. im sure that Nortons invented Viruses to put that crap on your PC/s to start with..
I wish we wouldn’t flame/troll each other. It isn’t helping. I love Linux, use it every day, play *all* of my games in it. Yes, I miss a lot of games (Skyrim…
), and even including that, I still have way too many games to play, and not enough time to play them.
Similarly, Mac folks love OS X (in general) and think it’s the best platform for them.
Windows gamers enjoy the best, and broadest variety, of games in the industry, without doubt. They also (in general) love using Windows and feel most productive there.
I hate to see the anger and vitriol we spew at each other over what ultimately is a choice as important as a pizza topping. Yes, one may have a strong and convincing philosophical reason to avoid one (e.g. vegetarians avoiding sausage and pepperoni), or some kind of allergy (e.g., allergic to olives) which might be an analog for incompatible hardware, but when it comes down to it it’s all pizza. It’s all video games.
We’re all PC desktop gamers (in the “personal computer” sense), and the industry needs all of us to succeed beyond the constant stream AAA-console game clones.
I hope that RSI can find a way to properly interpret bias in the polls, and adjust accordingly. Seeing the Linux & Mac numbers at 4%, one could wrongly say “See? They don’t care and don’t matter.”
I prefer to say “Look… out of these very generous communities, you have backers who have pledged over $300000 for a game they HAVE NO HOPE OF EVER PLAYING because they shared YOUR vision. That counts for something.”
Damn Right it counts for a lot!
I Love my Mac…but I really could care less what OS I use -as long as it Really Works well. If I can afford it I’ll build a personal machine just for flying in Star Citizen…and modify my servers, as needed, to deliver the best I can online. I backed, so far, but a paltry $530…with another 500 or so intended before the end of this spring -because I Believe in this…and I Believe in all you guys and ladies, as well…and I also Know (have it on very goof authority) that many at CloudImperium / RSI are Mac enthusiasts, as well. I believe they will do their utmost to make Star Citizen Mac capable, Linux capable and also Windows OS. I’ll take their best efforts and run with whatever they implement.
– Maybe, for the fun of it, have decals for ships saying ‘Mac Powered’ , ‘Linux Powered’…or Windows Fusion Drives Inside’ …just to fuel the persistent universe ‘battle blood heating’. -or ‘Alienware Rules’ …or something. LOL (all this tripe typed on my Mac, while my Linux Fedora 18 hums in the other room on 4 DL585 G2 quads, and my Windows XP to my left sings ‘Death to Mac’ ditties, periodically). “…just gimme the darned Universe…and I’ll be ecstatic!
Sadly, (correct me if I’m wrong) but I think the problem may be out of their hands. Star Citizen is being built using CryEngine 3, which only supports DirectX. RSI can’t support Mac and Linux until Crytek support them. Anyone heard if they have plans to do so? I might be fine on Windows here, but I still hope they do:)
Where did you get that info from? Direct X 10 not compatible with OS below Vista is due to a one-off driver framework changes and the graphic subsystem overhaul. There has not been any planned overhaul after that.
The whole gaming industry needs to shift to OpenGL while it still can.
+1 to that, then it can be on Steam for Linux!
Awesome wallpapers, keep em coming!
I have to say im sooo surprised with the lack of Pvp excitment
I think most may be like me. I’m excited about PvP, but my focus will be PvE coop. I like both, but if you make me choose just one….
Cyk
@Cykoth – Agreed!
Exactly my sentiments too.
Well, 46% want either PvP or both. There is playerbase for PvP, and that playerbase isn’t small.
I’m not really interested in PvP because I expect that the people who will only concentrate in fighting will become so tough that it will be impossible to beat them. They will have the best gear while i’ll only have a mouse and keyboard and a ship not really fitted for fighting. So i would be killed easilly. PvE might be more balanced.
There is also so much other things to do.
You’re still thinking in a “collect gear” mindset. I’d venture to say that a heavily modded ship with a crappy pilot will still lose to a skilled pilot in a stock ship. (hint hint there dev team!)
There is hope.. Piloting skills should definitely a big asset.
You really think that HOTAS, multiple displays, track-IR will not offer you an advantage? Also I think thas better missiles are more important for fights than larger cargo hold:)
I laso want PvE coop. I would like to try PvP but some players cheat, grief and if there is more of them then I would like I would rather if there was not open PvP.
The advantage will be in the player’s skill, not the tools they have. I can easily imagine some player with a one monitor setup, controlling with keyboard and mouse totally crapping all over someone with a premium gaming rig. If that happens, then we’ll know that the game is indeed working well
Although, I can also imagine the one on the sore end of that will probably complain that he was “griefed” or that the game isn’t balanced enough.
Truth is that they won’t have been griefed, outclassed yes, but not griefed.
That is part of what i meant by best gear. Not only they will have the best upgrades, but also they will have HOTAS, multiple displays, track-IR etc. If they have all that and that they concentre on fighting (mean that they are really skilled), i’ll not stand a chance.
Yeah, as far as PvP goes I’m a perpetual noob w/ slow reflexes. I stay out of those places. Dying every 3.14 seconds isn’t my idea of fun.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes!
Nice wallpapers, but the ships look a little bit glossy..
Personally I like the shininess. It’s like a stylized Squadron 42 recruiting/propaganda poster
That’s Vanduul blood…turns out they’re not as likely to attack your ship with a few coats.
lol, I like that explanation Aero
Those turrets look mean though. I bet they could one-shot any fighter sized ship
I personally hope the highest level of Star Citizen graphics can not be run on today’s computers. I want a game that will stress any hardware out there.
Remember it’s being built on CryEngine3. They’re going to stress the engine as far as they possibly can and still keep immersion in the game (can only stretch code so far before it breaks).
Will the newest most expensive hardware on release be able to handle the game on Ultra no problem? Likely.
Will today’s high-end racks be able to run the game, perhaps only slightly upgraded, on ultra? Likely as well. (Example go to 16GB instead of 8GB of RAM)
I would love this game to be the new dick wagging, my computer can run this (see Crysis 2008), but it’s being built on an engine that was A)designed to scale down for today’s consoles and B)will be at the end of it’s lifespan by the time the game is released.
I expect Chris to make miracles happen. But hardware will surpass the software’s capabilities within the two years.
Hope this helps you out Lance
Well, maybe the highest should be able to run on 2 GTX 690 SLI at 30 fps. We are talking about a lot of processing power. So much, I dunno if any developer can come up with enough of stuff to use it all except add more polygons to everything.
Particle effects. Particle effects everywhere!
Just imagine, you shoot down a fighter and get to watch small pieces of debris bouncing off your cockpit glass if you don’t change course.
With enough effects like that, it should be easy to stress out any imaginable system available today.
Cryengine 3 already stressed my PSU to the limit and beyond, today I’m off PSU hunting
PVP, Linux, and pirates are much louder on the forums than their actual populations.
Well said.
Yeah, thanks!
This is actually pretty representative of many forums. The most vocal are vocal because they’re passionate and usually want to drive change. The majority of players never frequent forums at all, and most of those who do visit forums are usually happy with the direction/state of things as they are or have been outlined to be, so they don’t post. Particularly if what they feel has already been posted.
Not to mention the majority of people that don’t have all day to waste arguing with the zealous vocal few trying to drive change. It isn’t worth the time and frustration unless those vocal few actually start to get their way and truly cause damage.
Very true. Passionate noise is not a symptom of contentment.
No, it’s a symptom of either being a spammer or a troll.
If you are trying to say us that people who don’t post 50 messages on one topic are NOT passionate about the game or they don’t want changes – you are BADLY WRONG.
I would expect the bias to be even greater than what the survey shows. Many players quite likely never saw the survey or didn’t care to answer – and I would expect those players that didn’t see or answer it to be mostly among the least vocal or passionate ones.
It’s why I always look at such surveys with a touch of sceptisism. After all, we are only viewing the results of an over-expectant minority and so the results are a little skewed to their extreme mindset.
If CIG were to send out email surveys to all of it’s pledgers, they’d get a much more realistic picture, which would probably be quite different to the results above. But then such players would only complete such a survey if there was something in it for them. In others words CIG needs to do a wider “prize draw” survey of it’s pledgers.
It might actually be worth their while doing that in future…
*scepticism
Actually this is wrong about linux user. Many of us who voted Windows have dual boot to use Linux aswell. My windows install is only for gaming. For work I use Linux. Those numbers are not representative about Linux users since there was only one option to vote.
Many people will have assumed the survey referred to their games machine. Since most mainstream games only run on Windows, Windows would be their pick. So unfortunately, this perpetuates the catch 22 situation: Mainstream developers don’t make games for linux because no one plays games on linux; but no one plays games on linux because developers don’t make games for linux!
If you asked the question what OS would people like to play games on, the results would probably go back up to the 20% we saw in the previous poll for linux rather than the 2.4% we see here.
Correct! The above poll is counting the people who *already* pledged on a *Windows-only* game. I wonder which OS they’re running?
Bingo.
+1
Also: Perma-death proponents.
“Combat Preference –
PVE – 53%
PVP – 20%
Both – 26%
”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!!!
I love, LOVE how much forums TWIST the actual truth. Now everyone screaming for PvP and PvP only gameplay should go to the corner sit there shut for next 12 months.
SO MUCH FOR PVP “”CROWD”"
53% want pve only and 46% want pvp/both, it looks like the game is aiming to have a mixture of both which is the best policy if its done right. PVE takes away a lot of the freedom of having an open universe.
If you add up the numbers its 73% for PVE/Both and 47% for PVP/both… so its a pretty significant difference.
Simply adding the “don’t care” opinion to one side isn’t that clever…
Anyway I would leave it the way it is. Many people love the solo mode about other space games, and some want it to be a good MMO game. But true gamers will be open for both and enjoy both sides whenever they like to.
Note: good MMO game does not necessarily imply PvP, much less forced PvP. I’m all for the MMO feeling – as long as I can partake in all PvE content without ever being at risk of being forced into PvP. If I find myself subject to PvP against my wishes I’m just going to leave the online universe and keep to private servers.
So, extrapolating from the answers, I would guess adding a complete “PvP opt out” would please 53% of the player base, displease 20% of the player base, and have an unknown effect on the remaining 26%. Seems like a good idea to me; even if everyone that wants both was displeased by a PvE-only option, adding it would still please more players than it would displease

“HUURR DUURR, I don’t want to get killed by players because it hurts my ego! I should be able to completely stop any risk of versing other players in the _multiplayer_ section of a game!”
The persistent universe is a multiplayer server, one were people freely interact online; if you want co-op/pve, play offline co-op or on a private server.
Wait, the crowd of people who enjoy some pvp v those who don’t is 50/50, that is quite a pvp crowd to me. And nobody has been screaming for “pvp only”. The vast majority of the pvp crowd enjoy pve with some pvp on the side, that being the only logical way as pvp seldom pays for itself.
It’ll all depend largely on what PvP is like.
I’m a big fan of PvP, yet I’ve grown to avoid it in most MMOs as it’s just there to be there in form of unimportant arena stuff, which I can have better in any tactical shooter you name.
If ultimately PvP isn’t going to have the same kind of potential impact in this game as PvE will have, then I won’t be doing PvP in Star Citizen either.
I mean what’s the fun in it if it isn’t done to gain control over a certain area of space or to get or defend that precious cargo your target is shipping.
I mean PvP seperated from the rest of the game is something a lot of MMOs do nowadays and most of the time it’s just done to appease people yelling for it with no further thought going into how to integrate it properly as a fun and encouraging part of the game. I mean heck you even have seperated equippment for PvE and PvP which in my view is a total perversion.
In my case, at least, I can’t stand PvP mixed with PvE. I like PvP, I like PvE, but I can’t stand playing a game that attempts to mix the two into a single game mode.
The kind of segregated PvP and PvE you describe might be an attempt to cater to other players like me.
BTW, the dual gear is not so much about having both be a separate aspect of the game; it’s more about forcing players to do an independent grind for each aspect, preventing them from using part of the PvP grind to jumpstart the PvE progression and vice versa. In other words, it’s all about keeping players playing for more time, even if it sacrifices fun and realism in order to do so.
If you wanted to be unbiased and honest Sky, you would not be posting that.
I personally have a PvE leaning overall. I played through Freelancer with mods offline for PvE… but still voted for Both
But Clearly on these forums most people do not get what PvP actually means to this game. I have read through a Great Many threads about it.
A Large % of people anti PvP still think of EVE ganking they hear about or even experienced or think of other MMO’s where you step out and get pounced on while trying to mind your own business while taking their early (often) steps
– I would say the Poll is skewed the wrong way with many put off (Star Citizen’s) PvP due to holding false impressions of what it will mean.
Its not surprising some are put off, while having in mind making innocent Trade Mission and getting Pirated.
— Too many mistakenly see this as How Its Going To Be.
Star Citizen has a HUGE play area with huge safer areas to relax and enjoy time.
But is big enough that when you want you can venture out into unpoliced space for a bit of adventure.
+ hiring wingmen for more dangerous missions makes it a whole lot more fun.
Chris said he wants to get more of the PvE only types to get out and experience the fun of playing with/against real opponents as well as PvE and hopes Star Citizen will bring more people together
Korai, you got it right on with the ‘hiring wingmen’ idea. That’s going to be my prime focus for PvP areas, hiring out as a Mercenary wingman/bodyguard.
I agree about the wingman. In my case of having a constellation i can hire a crew at the least a pilot for my fighter. So yeah it’ll be interesting. However those of you under the impression my Constellation won’t be entering open space beware… it’ll have teeth and will not hesitate to fire back with all guns and a fighter escort. Approach at risk of becoming space debris.
I couldn’t care less about ganking.
I’m playing the Firefall beta, where it’s not so uncommon to have a drop pod of NPC enemies drop close to me or to whichever dynamic event I’m trying to complete (half a dozen times it even dropped on my head, sometimes killing me outright); it’s as close to PvE ganking as you can get, and I don’t care about it. It’s just a part of the PvE game.
On the other hand I get really upset if I’m doing some PvE content and I’m attacked by other players; it can completely kill my fun even if I win in the end.
In other words, my issues are not with the ganking per see, but with a living, (hopefully) thinking person deciding to use me as content when I’m not in the mood. I won’t put up with this, so if I can’t choose to be completely immune to PvP while doing all PvE content that exists in the online universe, I will just keep away from it and play in private servers.
I would like to pint out that the question was “Combat PREFERANCE”. They didn’t ask if we wanted PvP or PvE ONLY, just what we were looking forward to MOST.
For Myself, I answered PvE, but I sure don’t want them to leave PvP OUT.
True! Really surprised me! But also gives me hope that the Dev team focuses more on PVE then PVP!
The shortcut is too easy. (or the troll is too obvious)
I’d love to be able to play SC on Linux but I answer Windows because my computer used for gaming is under Windows. Mostly because most of the game I play are only on Windows…
If the question was “Would you like a Linux version of SC ?”, the result would be much different. When this question has been answered on other crowdfunded games I pledged the result was between 15% and 20%…
Neat
while i’m sure recommended system requirements are often lofty, i don’t like the notion of leaving older systems in the dust if it can be avoided. this is a pc game after all, and pc games typically are accommodating of older hardware, as they should be. not everyone will have or can afford the latest and greatest hardware available.
Hey Cyco-Dude,
As I just pointed out to Lance, above (2 comments up) CryEngine3 was designed to scale down to today’s modern consoles (ie 360, PS3), and based on the survey most of us are at or beyond the next gen consoles projected stats. So I wouldn’t worry about being able to play the game. They are trying to make money on it after all. You just might not be able to run it on Ultra Settings with an older machine. So if you have a pre SandyBridge intel or a graphics card with less than 2GB of VRAM, I’m sure you’ll be able to pick up this hardware VERY cheaply in 2 years time.
I think it’ll have graphics settings so the player can tweak it higher or lower to match their own system. They’d be mad not to have that as it’s already a niché game. They don’t want to narrow that niché further by freezing out players who have half-decent PCs/Laptops just because some want it to only play on their high-spec machines. That wouldn’t be good for business.
If you were around circa Wing commander release, you should know that the game was extremely prejudiced on older machines.
Thanks for the survey results. It is always good to know what people are thinking. When we talk on the forms and in chat we know what the hot topics are.
I’m surprised explorer is the most anticipated role, and trader 2nd… I expected a lot of mercenaries or some other fighting roles actually.
Perhaps it’s the possibility to get a new star system named after the person who discovers it that drives it. Hell, I hate exploring, but if I could get naming rights to a star system or a planet? I might just spend a few hours looking in the dark corners of known space.
Well I thought that too, but now that I know everyone else will do too… Btw isn’t it a wormhole to be named after us? Star system or planet needed a high pledge level afaik.
I suppose, but let’s say they’ll introduce 200 new star systems all togeather. And they are lucky enough to get 4 million players, then it’d be 1 on every 20,000.
A jump point would be fine for me though!
It kind of contradicts those that prefer PvE and is quite puzzling. If they want to explore the outer reaches of space then they’re going to run into other players, I’m afraid. I can see a upcoming conflict of needs there. I hope they don’t expect CIG to extend the PvE slider to more regions to space to satisfy them.
Of course we are:) I hope that exploration will be more about better sensors and not about bigger guns.
perhaps the explorers are the pvp/both crowd? I certainly intend to go explorer/pirate (how else will I find a good hidden asteroid base?).
Given how toxic some of the PvP defenders get I believe I would prefer a separated persistent universe dedicated to PvE players instead of changing how the slider works on the currently planned one.
Anyway, the only way to get me to play online is to offer me some way to experience all PvE content without any risk of being forced into PvP. Otherwise I will keep to private servers and not even acknowledge the existence of the official servers.
I believe that’s what the slider and the safe areas of space are for.
Not even nearly enough. The slider as currently proposed won’t let players completely avoid PvP. Also, PvE content outside the “safe areas” will be completely out of reach of any player in the online universe that either doesn’t want to play PvP, or else wants absolute control over when he can be attacked by other players. Thus, the online universe as currently described is worthless for me as an entertainment venue.
For me this will have a fairly ironic effect: between Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen, I’m far more likely to engage in PvP in the one game that doesn’t force me to engage in PvP. The lack of control over when I can be engaged in Star Citizen will push me into private servers instead, where it’s highly unlikely I will ever engage in PvP; on the other hand the fact ED intends to allow players complete control over when they can be engaged in PvP will allow me to choose when to risk or not risk PvP while still playing in it’s online galaxy, and as a result I will likely choose to engage in PvP whenever I’m in the mood for it.
Wow.
May I ask why you’re so ardently opposed to PvP combat? I’m not quite sure I understand what the huge difference is between being dragged into a generated PvE encounter where you have to dogfight for your character’s life, as opposed to doing the exact same thing with other players?
I myself will probably fly around with my slider with pvp to minimum, but there are plenty of situations where it’d be perfectly reasonable to get attacked by players rather than NPCs … for example, I think its a little daft to have a game where players can take over bases and resources etc towards the edges of explored space, and not let them attack people that stroll in and exploit their resources. Clearly it’d make sense for an NPC faction to do just that.
rather im more surprised the number of those aiming to be pirates is so high. i expected the number to be much lower. traditionally pirates were known for working alone and there were few of them. with 20% of the game pop wanting to be pirates the bounty hunters should have it easy to make cash.
I guess I’m one of the few people who dont know how to build a computer.
It’s easy. Everything fits in only one direction, and when you notice that you have to push really hard to get a component at its place, you have something wrong. Only Power-, Reset-, and HDD light-connectors can still be a huge pain in the rear end.
Amen to that brother!
2nd Amen here! Can never remember which direction they need to go in, and stupid HDD always seems to need to go in the opposite direction to the other connectors! It usually revolves around a bit of trial and error on my part.
PC’s have become SO simple to build nowadays. I can still remember the days of needing to set dip switches and setting physical jumpers on the MB to ensure that your BUS speed and clock multiplier were set correctly for the Mhz / Ghz rating of your CPU. Same thing with RAM… nowadays everything is just plug and play and settings are altered in “nice” GUI within the BIOS screen.
*sigh* good to see I’m not the only one who misses the old BIOS. Also, is it weird that a 25 year old network/system admin in the game industry abhors Linux and it’s fanboys?* I do enough command line and scripting at work, I don’t want to do it at home!
* Not actually looking to start yet another Windows/Linux debate just my honest opinion.
Agreed.
On the other hand most high-end boards still have the ugly BIOS complete with speling mistakes and unintelligible settings that aren’t explained in the manual.
“Nice” GUI BIOSes only seemed to have come in from OEM’s in the past few years as far as I can tell.
Dip switches…this brings back memories..
It’s never to late to learn Sahdowfenix
I’m running a gaming laptop because I have to (work), but I’ve built my own / families towers in the past.
Basically all you have to do is start with a motherboard that suites your needs [let's use a topend gaming rig as an example] make sure it has: compatibility for the latest CPU architecture, at least one PCiE 3.0×16 (preferably 3 or more), DDR3 2400MHz RAM slots. (ex ASUS Maximus V Extreme)
Get a full tower case designed for cooling and optionally looking cool (ex NZXT PHAN-003RD Phantom Full-Tower Case)
Buy a highend CPU (ex Intel Xeon E5-2690)
At least one highend graphics card (ex nVidia GeForceGTX 680, AMD Radeon 7970)
12GB of DDR3 2400Mhz RAM
A 1200W Power Supply (ex Corsair AX1200i)
A liquid cooler (ex Thermaltake CLW0211 BigWater 760)
A sound card (ex ASUS ROG Xonar Phoebus Sound Card)
A few kickass-fast HDDs RAID0′d for speed
A blue-ray drive
Windows 7 64bit
Monitor, keyboard, mouse, done.
Note: Don’t build the monster I’ve just created unless you’re RICH… I didn’t do too much component matching either…
Throw it all together and you’ve got yourself a gaming rig that you probably saved 20% or more on just because you put it together yourself. You’ve also gained the right to brag about your rig and the awe of the uninitiated.
Websites like tigerdirect.com and newegg.com are you best friends, along with wikipedia and google if you’re unsure about something. All of the pieces literally only go where they belong, so you shouldn’t have much trouble. Happy building
TL;DR: Figure out what you want/can afford. Compromise. Make sure all the pieces you’re getting work together. Have fun, save money, gain bragging rights for building your own rig.
WARNING: The uninitiated will forever consider you more techsavvy than themselves and will always ask you for computer help.
Thanks for the detailed advice! How would I know which parts fit together? Also, is the concept of bottlenecks valid? By this I mean is there any point to getting 32 GB RAM if the processor or operating system can only effectively use 16? Does that make sense, and if so how could I avoid these for an optimized rig? I’m looking to get a high end desktop gaming rig in about a couple of years to run Star Citizen, preferably at high or highest settings for $2000 or less if I can manage
When you’re ready, come to the chatroom and ask or ask in the forums. People are quite good at spending other people’s money.
As someone who just built his first system in 20 years, the only thing that takes some real art is making sure you get the thermal compound and processor heat sink assembly correct.
Another great source is http://www.tomshardware.com/
Click on the “Build your own” section. They do a gaming ($500), enthusiast ($1000) and performance ($2000) build every three months using different components (depending on what they think is the best deal / most interesting) to get the most value for the money in the allowed budget. You can build a very nice gaming rig for $2000 or under. Their most recent $1000 build has a GTX670, SSD for OS, 1TB HHD for data… Be plenty to run Star Citizen well (for now!)
Cool! Chris is a fellow Tom’s fan… They are my nr 1 source for hardware reviews and bang-for-the-buck comparisons.
+1
I hear this guy know a thing or two bout Puters
There is also a UK localisation of tom’s hardware for the UK market. So it gives builds in pounds instead of dollars.
:-O
I helped to inspire The Roberts make a discussion post. NOT WORTHY!
But in all seriousness, you’re absolutely right about suggesting tomshardware Chris, it is a great site for showing you how to do it and also for getting any/all questions seriously answered.
Personally though, I find that the “Build Your Own Section” is more of a “See What We Built Section” and that it does sort of take away from the thrill of figuring it all out for yourself.
There’s nothing more enlightening than finding out after you’ve put it ALL together, got excited, and pushed the power button for the first time, that the PSU you bought is too weak and NOTHING HAPPENS…
Denial and Error all the way!
There are sites like alternate.com that have configurators that will assist you to build your own rig and tells you what components mach together..
you can order them and then it’s just like lego for grown ups.
Also there are loads and loads of youtube movies to help you build your rig and show you exactly how to for example use cooling pasta…
IT’s not that hard really and super fun to do.
There also a section at Newegg.com that has DIY kits, basically they are a bunch of components that Newegg says all work together. You still need to read up on them to make sure they can scale to where you want to take your machine (PCI slots, RAM slots, nVidia, AMD, etc etc – what Dipster was writing about). Usually you have to pick up additional parts not in the kits. Like I chose a kit with a good tower, GeForce SLI cards, sweet CPU/cooler and then chose what RAM, HDDs and other things I wanted.
Wow, thanks for all the help everyone. I’m excited to take a gander at building my own gaming rig as we get closer to launch (or alpha?). I’ve got your referenced sites bookmarked, newegg, tigerdirect, tomshardware, and alternate.com
Eidolonius, I’ve referred to your FAQ plenty of times because, well, I can’t remember everything since the beginning of the pledge drive!
Chris, thanks for taking the time to respond to my comment personally at this time of the night in LA. It speaks volumes about your commitment to your fans, and I appreciate it. So long as you aren’t too sleep-deprived to code!
Borcula, thanks for the tip on the compatibility checker website. That’s been one of my main concerns.
I wish I had more time to contribute to the forums and chat (I got “lucky” today because a series of unfortunate flight cancellations left me with some downtime), but as a lurker I’m glad to have your input!
Happy to help dude
Happy to help dude
You might even find yourself building pretend systems you have no intention of buying, in your spare time, just for fun soon enough.
Heh, seems i’m a little late to the party, but feel free to check out my hardware guide here on the forums:
http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/forum/showthread.php?15249-Guide-to-PC-Gaming-hardware
Might take some of the time and effort out of weighing up options
82% self made game systems. That comes as a surprise tbh.
As for 8 gig vote: Well, 12 wouldn’t be a problem either, as long as it’s for a reason. The computer I’ll be playing SC on will have at least 12 gb ram.
It is awesome but I was surprised too:)
Us PC guys are passionate about our hardware, and as such we don’t just buy any old crap off the shelf. I personally never invest in any piece of hardware without reading multiple reviews.
I run 4 gigs 1600 @ 6-6-6-20 (stupidly tight timings), and as a student, I don’t want to go out and buy a new slow, 8 gig set.
you don’t have to do it now,you will play the alpha and all what will come prior to that…but the final game will be out in 2 years(probably more!) so while now it’s ok,4g of ram in 2014-2015 will not be soo good honestly..
Protip: Having insanely fast RAM doesn’t help much at all with game performance. What will slow down game performance big time, is when the system runs out of RAM.
I’m sorry buddy, but you can’t have the awesome graphical experience that C.R. talks about, and not have the hardware to support it. Having said that, the game will run on 4GB of RAM (perhaps with RAM eating settings turned down).
Yeah gamers tend to build there own systems. Stores like best buy and retail vendors like dell target the misinformed and uneducated. Those systems stuggle to play any high end games because they are several years out of date by the time they reach your door. Gamers on the other hand keep the industry alive by purchasing parts and encouraging the technology. Sadly there was an ugly curse on the gaming industry where more than 80% of the games being produced were geared for consoles that are also out of date, but that is being fixed by people like Chris who make the decision to stay with the PC platform and not cater to the old systems that are just cash cows.
I already know how star citizens death system will work!
For real, it was in the exclusive interview gamestar had with CIG (issue #03/2013)
Quote/translation?
I am quite sure that the system changed or was not explained properly in that interview.
It was brief, true enough. Though it answered the question why permadeath is necessary and the rationale is quite sound, if I may say so.
Why not use OpenGL instead of Direct X?
It would make it easier to port to Mac and Linux in the future.
Cryengine doesn’t support OpenGL at this time. While it’s been mentioned before that CryTek has some customers who have asked about it (OpenGL), at this time it’s a DirectX engine only. They may be exploring OpenGL, but whether or not it’ll make it in time for Star Citizen to make use of it is open for the future and for CryTek to decide.
Cryengine 3 runs on the PS3. Therefore, there must be a branch that supports OpenGL, considering that the PS3 does not use DirectX for its rendering.
PS3 doesn’t run a simple OpenGL.
They had to rewrite a huge chunk of code to make CE run on PS3, and they’d still have to do that even if the engine for some odd reason would be made in OpenGL to start with.
Not many gaming laptops out there huh?
Being away from home for months at a time with work and being forced to use one is looking worse and worse
I still have decent stats, but I don’t want to be left behind. Pledged for a gold card…
Alienware m17x R3: i7-2760QM, AMD 6990m, 8GB RAM.
I already know I can upgrade to a 7970m, but I’m gonna hold out as long as I can and hopefully get some of that new 28nm architecture (perhaps smaller by then?). RAM will be going up as well come SC.
Also paid ENTIRELY WAY to much money for this thing to dump it and buy a new one before it’ll even be out of warranty!
Problem is GPU.
For example a GTX 680M is a cut down 670, same on AMD.
I know
Not gonna quit my job just so I can have an excuse to build myself a gorgeous desktop though. lol
Uh, so the need for linux went from 6,295 (20% of votes) [1] to 2.4% of 8111 ?
I hope the possibility of a linux compatibility didn’t vanish..
[1] https://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/poll-additional-stretch-goals/
Arguably, seeing there’s over 100k backers, it’s likely 2 variables subsets of us answered either poll.
Isn’t Linux support a CryEngine thing anyway? If CryEngine 3/4 works on Linux, so will Star Citizen.
The difference is that the last poll asked what we wanted; this poll asked what we currently use. As most people are currently forced to play the games they want to play in Windows, Windows got a much greater share of the votes.
Thats right people, only because of subscribers like me, can you get these wallpapers! BOW BEFORE US!! lol jk….at least give me a cheese coney. Those poll results are defenetly interesting, which will surely help RSI with determining how powerful the graphics and everything can be. And I am really looking forward to the update on the death mechanic!
Can’t wait to be a bounty hunger!
I’m still wondering whether that was a typo or a pun as well
The correct answer is: Chuckles ^^
I am positively surprised by the survey… but as some people before me already wrote, there are smaller passionate groups very loud. And i dont write a lot n the forum because there are already more things announced for this game then i ever hoped for. And I trust Chris and CIG to make this game amazing.
I definitely am a pve/co-op pve player, like to play as explorer or someone who does not focus mainly on fights. And if it is in Racing games or space sims, i love to have the feeling to sit right in a realistic cockpit, to feel that its really me sitting there, not just looking at the ship from the outside.
And i am glad to see that the majority of the people seem to have the same opinion and it might lead the game in that direction that i am looking forward for to see.
But I still hope and believe that in someway everybody will get a great game, no matter if pvp or pve fan, no matter if pirate, law enforcer or explorer, 1st or 3rd person!
I think it should have been pointed out that while 91.89% don’t use a 3D-interface, 29.89% will be using the Oculus Rift for this game. That’s 2,399 people…!!!
29.85% will be using the Oculus Rift, my mistake. Freudian slip of the hundreth percentile.
And that’s only people who took the survey! There’s 100,000 more of us out there!
It might have slipped peoples’ memory, but as I recall, Chris’s games have always pushed the hardware boundaries. Back when Wing Commander came out, a lot of people still didn’t even have sound cards, and a 20MB hard drive was considered huge. 4MB of RAM? Most computers had 1MB and a 386 with a math co-processor was considered a high-end machine. My first computer was a 486DX and most people considered it overkill back in 1990. Origin games in general, seemed to push the envelope for hardware.
I’m not surprised SC will push it again, but Chris’s ambition is high, and so are our expectations. The good news is, it’s much easier and cheaper to get a high-powered machine today. In 2 years, today’s bleeding edge will be common-place and easy to reach.
Today things are a bit different.
CE3 scales very good and CPU is not that important.
Yon just have to deal with lower/medium settings on GPU.
I’ll definitely be building a new PC just for this game. Mine right now is aging (4yrs old) but can still run most games. Take your time guys, I’m not in a hurry (read: my wife won’t let me yet)
Woot the results reflected what I voted!
Yeah, I also appear to be comfortably average, with a few exceptions.
we can solve the the really tough player vs really noob player with clans, gangs, outfits and factional teams, one really strong and tough opponents will die to 20 weak opponents and 20 weak opportunist will eat shit against 20 medium UEE enlisted veterans military force!
I really think that 8GB and 64bit only (You can not require 8GB on 32bit:D) is quite reasonable.
I also would not mind DX11, I do not expect that older DX10 cards or DX9 cards would be powerful enough to run game on higher details, maybe in SLI/Crossfire. However I do not know how much better the game could be if it was developed as DX11 only? Would there be more room for optimalization? How hard is to add DX9/10 support for game that was developed for DX11?
I think they should develop DX11 64bit game for at least 8GB machines and if they can support older rigs than it is great, if they do not, it is great too. I remember old days when some games had really high requirements but they were good and people upgraded their hardware because of them. So if this game can bring this feeling to gamers again and the upgrade will worth it I am all for it.
Well the latest Beta of Crysis 3 is DX11, I tried to run it on my laptop with an i7, 8Gb RAM Win7 x64 and it halted due to the lack of DX11 compatable graphics card. Crysis 3 would not even install.
Oh, how unexpected.
Why should it be installed, when you (or your laptop) won’t be able to run it?
Awesome wallpapers
Thanks!
The most important part of the system requirements is keeping in mind that the game is still 2 years away from completion.
If u put 20 bucks a week away from now till then you would have $2000 for an amazing system.
You can build a top of the range gaming rig right now for $1800 (with a little shopping around) that eases through Crysis 2 (cryengine 3 game) and the Crysis 3 beta and anything else out there.
Even a budget system in November of 2014 will manage this quite well IMO.
+1
We all want to see awesome graphics, an endless universe, a clever AI, couple of ingame features – you name it.
So we need the tools for that.
so, after the redesign of the survey, were the votes reset or were they just added on top?
I can’t vote while logged in…and when i log out i can vote multiple times…kinda strange
I think that whole “surveying” you are doing is awesome!
It gives the community a way to participate, to have their voice heard and to pass the time until the release.
Generally I think that surveys will do a big part in ensuring the quality of the game will be as we all hope it to be.
I’d like to suggest to do a lot of … surveying (is that a word? :S) or voting, maybe even about game mechanics in a later point.
For example give us several options for shield effects and let the community vote.
Ok, I’m asking much here (though it would be awesome!), but bottom line remains:
I find your surveys great!
Well said!
what it will be nice, is when the game is release, RSI suggest us a self computer configuration that players could made it’s self !!!
I doubt RSI would do an official one, but I’ve made such a guide in the hardware forum that you and others might be interested in.
http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/forum/showthread.php?15249-Guide-to-PC-Gaming-hardware
Thank you so much guys, for sharing the results of the survey with us.
87% Self made machines… True Gamers up in here…
True Dat
Awesom Sauce! I’d be interested in seeing some of the Additional Comments.
Can’t wait to hear about this Death mechanic!
Did you seriously just make a survey asking non-technically savvy people about APIs…? Better question: Why in the world would you ask pure gamers, one of the most (exceptions excluded) egocentric groups of people on the internet, about system requirements in such an exclusive way? Heck, from the first batch of comments it’s already apparent that only one in five people understands what’s at stake while the rest are either ignorant or just don’t give a damn.
Memory are so cheap nowadays 8GB requirement is nothing, but that’d require naturally a 64bit OS, which, in 2 years time, should be a easy requirement.
Direct X 11 support should also be widespread in future.
The important thing is not supporting the latest bell and whistles for the sake of coolness, but for optimization. A game that is optimized for a specific minimum requirement should be the goal here.
I hope that take that combat poll seriously. So many developers focus so much on balancing the game around PvP that PvE suffers for it, while clearly the majority shows that they prefer PvE content. I’m not saying to neglect PvP by any means (gotta love me some PvP every now and then), rather recognize that PvE is the gameplay style people spend the most time doing and balance accordingly.
As long as PvP is the easy-mode, I’m happy.
One stipulation for my RAM: 4 to 6 required, 8 recommended. Can’t get a true 4 GB on an x86 system anyway.
My Computer Specs 2014.
- Intel Core i8
- NVidia Geforce 880GTX
- 32 GB Ram
- Windows 7 64bit
I think it’s safe to say that a big majority of us have x64 platforms, and DX11. We’ll likely all have 8GB of memory by the time this game comes out.
I would absolutely love it if this game were purely x64, DX11, and could take advantage of several gigs of memory.
I misvoted I meant to click yes to upgrading.
I’m surprised that according to the intermediate poll result, more people are put off by the idea of Star Citizen being DX11 only than by it requiring 8 GB of RAM.
You’d think by the time someone has 8 GB or more RAM installed, they’ve long got a DX11 capable graphics card. Especially by the time the game comes out (~2015).
It’s more to do with anti-Windows rheotic. DX11 is Windows exclusive.
I’m looking forward to a little PvP, “Traders who missile spam and run away, live to fleeeeee another day”.
64 bit and DX11 are already standard, why do you even ask? Couple of dinosaurs with 10 year old systems should not hold the majority hostage, especially 2 years from now. They should stick with minecraft.
I’m the 3% that cares more about hosting then anything, atleast I would always have the game, and it wouldn’t require internet to play with friends. To me, that is more important than anything. Lan is just so much better, if you have friends that is, or a wife and some kids.
I am surprised that I am in the majority for many of these questions.
If you manage to get this out for OSX even though the numbers show that a minority want it for OSX you would be elevated to a even higher god-status. Please make it happen!
Fly safe.
the last question is kind of tricky i feel my rig is sufficient enough to play the game maxed or nearly maxed at this point in time. i do plan on upgrading in a year or two but not specifically for SC.
Couldn’t be both honest and accurate on the last question.
Was prepared to upgrade. But I already meet the benchmarks you where worried about.
Said yes to indicate willingness.
Holy CRAP – Am I reading these results wrong, or what?
AMD/ATI are literally HALF as popular as Nvidia graphics cards in the survey. Top 7 AMD cards: 21.98% userbase … Top 7 Nvidia cards: 47.18 userbase.
What the hell?! I certainly wasn’t expecting that (Not that I’m in favour of either company).
Had an intel system with Nvidea. Built a full AMD system.. imagine that… my AMD system runs more efficient.. the sad part of this is i was never and still am not a fan of AMD….
My PC is going on 2yrs old so by the time SC comes out, it’d be time for an upgrade anyway. My budget for a PC is usually in the 1k range so, as long as the specs fall around there, I’ll be good.
I plan on upgrading quite a bit by the time Star Citizen comes out, at that point I should have upgraded from my Core2 Duo E7500 to an Intel, likely at the VERY least and i5 37xxk,
No game should have an OS restriction, 32 or 64 especially. Some people will still be using vista.
I’m still using Vista. XD But, yeah nice wallpaper. To bad they both have sun flares. Hurts my poor eyes.
Interesting to see that the majority of players is looking forward to (co-op) PVE.
Yay for great missions!
what is wrong with this order?
Wing Commander fan – 43%
Privateer Fan – 29%
Freelancer Fan – 49%
Fan of other CR game – 15%
Fan of Space Sims – 83%
Want to back a game specifically for PC – 66%
Wanted to be part of a community during dev – 41%
call me a sceptic bar steward but all other results are in proper order
why would you cut out such a large potential audience by restricting the technology?
scale the graphics down to 8bit 640×480
it should run fine on any computer
Yes, yes and yes. I have already upgraded my PC to the top hardware, because of StarCitizen
