Starfarer Unlocked and Sunday Afternoon Updates

We’d like to begin by wishing everyone a happy Veterans Day (or Remembrance Day) to everyone today. We’re continually honored when we find out about men and women in uniform who have chosen to support Star Citizen and we can’t thank you enough for your service.

The big news today is that we’ve reached the $3.25 million mark and, as promised, we’re releasing the details on a new ship: the Starfarer tanker. Hopefully this description will help explain what all this extra money is going… expanding the Star Citizen world beyond the boundaries of the original Privateer or Freelancer and letting us make it a more vibrant, living universe. Keep going: you’ll get another star system at $3.3 million!

Starfarer

Builder: MISC (Musashi Industrial & Starflight Concern)
Crew (max): 2
Mass (empty): 125,000 KG
Focus: Tanker / Refueler

The MISC Starfarer is the galaxy’s standard fuel transporter. Starfarers are ubiquitous on both sides of the fueling process: their massive tanks allow for both the collection of space borne fuel from gas giants and extrasolar sources as well as the transport of active fuel from refinery stations to the primary market. Though the stock model lacks refinery equipment, the Starfarer does have docking mechanisms allowing it to conduct in-flight refueling operations with most spacecraft classes.

The most common Starfarer modification ships liquid foodstuffs in the same tanking system. A visually distinct long-haul bulk goods version mated to an alternate cargo chassis also exists, although it has proven far less popular than the more rugged Freelancer lineup. An armored tactical variant, the Starfarer Gemini (“Star-G”) is produced under contract by Aegis for use by the UEE military.

Upgrade Capacity: 8
Cargo Capacity: 75 tonnes
Engine-
Modifiers: 4
Max. Class: Anti-Matter
Thrusters: 2x TR4, 8 x TR2
Hardpoints-
2 x Class 2: Equipped 2 x Behring M3A Laser Cannon
1 x Class 3: Equipped 1 x Talon Stalker Image Recognition missiles
1 x Class 4: Equipped 1x KP M2A Laser Cannon (turret)

Citizen Cards

Today you can see the bronze Citizen Card provided at the $125 level. Users can choose between a “Colonel” and a “Freelancer” card, a way to display their support for two of Chris Roberts’ earlier franchises. We think the cards start looking a lot cooler as they look more metallic… so just wait until you see the real metal cards available for higher pledgers!

Facebook

We know a lot of you old spacehands aren’t fans of social networking and that’s entirely understandable. That’s why we always try and post the latest news to RSI first. Still, we’re proud of the fact that we’re almost to 10,000 “likes,” which is a metric that speaks volumes to outsiders… so, if you haven’t liked the Star Citizen Facebook page, we’d truly appreciate it.

I hope that gold card will be metal and that I will be able to have title Rear Admiral on it:-)
Great ship update I am looking forward to see how the explosion of this tanker will look like :D

good update :) anyway, the new star system will be revealed at 3.5 million or 3.3 as stated before?

  8. I was hoping that all cards would be made from metal….It’s not like it costs people…

One thing: both pics link to the same bigger image ;)

Well what else to say…. Have to buy some Starfarers to transport all that beer for the Star Citizen release celebration party on *put-in-planet-name*. Good thing we have big tankers! :-D

    I´ll taka a starfarer, too – when it’s not mine. :)

Wonder if space-refueling in the space-wilderness will become a way to make space-money?

Nice to have a more bulked out game though! And love that we get more updates too! Makes me hope we reach 4mill for even more frequent updates!

  13. Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

now we just need to get the ship document updated with this! onward to 3.5M and beyond…

I’m a veteran happy to support a game like this. Outer space and video games are my two biggest loves in life, so something like this has me truly excited for the first time in quite a while!

As for the ship, sounds interesting! At first as I was reading it, I was thinking it’d be pretty useless, but then the whole “can harvest and refine natural fuel elements” gives it good money-making purpose. Seems like it’d make for a good support ship, and also open to potentially good profits in a player-driven economy (“Oh, you’ve run out of jump fuel on the edge of known space? I can top you off for a few credits”).

Looking forward to getting that card!

  16. Avatar of Tosk Tosk says:

My question is that if the engines have an intake to pull in molecular hydrogen like it says on the ship development page, wouldn’t a refueling tanker be pointless? Or am I misunderstanding something?

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

it all depends on how fuel is used. will it be needed to fly at all, or will it only be used for jumping or using your afterburners?

      • Avatar of Tosk Tosk says:

I think it would be better if you had only fuel tanks with a limited range, but you could “scoop” hydrogen off of a gas giant or something and use it as a very crude, unrefined fuel. Where refined fuel is good for the engine and lasts longer.

      • Avatar of Ixos Ixos says:

Yeah. Id love to see a model where the onboard fuel gathering allowed for between 20-40% of you max speed sustained. If you want to go faster or manouver more youll eventually run out and need to set up a meeting with the closest station, carrier or tanker :)

  17. Avatar of Crichton Crichton says:

Looking forward to the economic ramifications of these sorts of ships!

  18. Avatar of Nameless Nameless says:

I’d like to have a real metal card, but this would mean I would have to pledge more. Well not bad at all, neither for you nor for me. Only thing that’s a bit confusing, at least for me, are the differences between 250$ pledge and 500$. I can’t see a big difference between those pledge tiers. Both include almost the same, I just do not understand why it’s double the price. Buying two times the 250$ pledge contains more than the 500$. The only big difference is one card ist out of metal the other is not.

I can’t believe no one caught the “Colonel” and “Harland Sanders” (aka Colonel Sanders of KFC fame) reference…

    I must be getting old…

  20. Avatar of nitrodust nitrodust says:

If you want Facebook likes, make it a stretch goal, e.g. at 20000 likes everyone gets a nice logo to paint on the side of their ship or something. Hell, might as well do that for backers too, every 10000 more backers we get another decal. I suggest shark teeth.
That aint an original idea, I really like how Obsidian managed their campaign.

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

another way to get likes is to bribe people. like us on facebook for 250 credits! it worked for hi-rez (who made tribes: ascend); they have well over 500,000 likes now.

not that anybody really cares about facebook. there’s almost no reason to go there; any update you need gets posted to the rsi website. which is better anyways, because not everyone has (or wants) facebook.

  21. Avatar of Tiger Claw Tiger Claw says:

Man, the industrialist in me is loving the idea of this ship. I love the idea of sitting back and watching money getting sucked into my holds, then turning around and selling it for a big fat profit.

Also, love the KFC reference on the card.

  22. Fill my tanker with jelly (grape) and give me peanut butter!

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

you’ll need two tankers for that, OR our compartmentalized bulkhead upgrade, which separates your one tank into two separate tanks! if you call within the next thirty minutes, we’ll throw in a 2-n-1 nozzle ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!

  23. Oh man you guys just threw a wrench into my ship plans…this is very interesting

  24. Avatar of Bearcat Bearcat says:

Do ships which are low on fuel have better speed/maneuverability? If so, I’ll take something lighter and keep one of these tankers off to the side for refueling between fights and long haul transits.

  25. Avatar of Burneyx Burneyx says:

Good haulers are welcome, very nice ;)

  26. Avatar of Korai Korai says:

    Nice update…

…takes a little of the edge off from waiting for the Constellation brochure to be released ^_^

sometimes it is hard to find the pics of the right ships

  28. Avatar of DarkCuddles DarkCuddles says:

Thanks! Please don’t do any facebook exclusive things. I can understand that spreading awareness of this game is important but many of us certainly don’t like having to use the facebooks.

  29. A few shot’s and a missile or two and dose baby’s are no more. I’d hate to fly one of them, to dam dangerous :)

    thank you for the update

  30. Avatar of Ned White Ned White says:

facebook page just hit 10,000 likes

  31. Avatar of Makus Makus says:

Whenever I look at heavy Haulers in these games, I always wonder if they can convert thier cargo pods into launch bays. Something like this could carry a number of snub fighters and I imagine that freelance merc squadrons would like a place to rearm that didn’t involve flaying all the way back to a planet.
    Just a thought.

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

i was thinking the same thing, but for a heavy transport ship not a tanker. but with a modular hull system, whose to say the same ship backbone can’t be converted into any of these things? tanker, cargo and fighter bays? sounds like a plan to me…

  32. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Very excited with the possibilities of using this ship to extract fuel from gas giants!!!

  33. Avatar of BISHOP BISHOP says:

Thank you from SSgt J. DuBroc, USAF, security forces.

  34. Avatar of Singularity Singularity says:

Nice looking card, one question, can we choose the name on our card before it’s shipped? My last name is too long for most cards.

  35. Avatar of K Z Ivan K Z Ivan says:

This ship info just got my comerce raider wheels turning, haveing the ability to refuel fighters,
a tanker to manage fuel, a heavy hauler to drop hijacked cargo with, a few fighters to handle escorts, and a light freightor to haul the jacked cargo to the dropoff ship and also flash sum bigger guns to help convence the mark to drop cargo and bugout.

  36. Space fuel in gas giants.. reminds me of The Saga of Seven Suns by Kevin Anderson..

I can’t wait for this game!

  37. I think I know what T.C.McQueen will be flying… ;)
