Stretch Goals Revealed!
October 26th, 2012

Congratulations everyone! We are an official “go” as of Thursday morning at 6:32 am EDT. Thanks to everyone’s enthusiasm we’ve got there in just two weeks.

I would like to say a big “thank you” to everyone. I know I have been saying thanks a lot recently, but you’ve earned them. You’re helping us put Space Sims back on the map! THANK YOU!

Now that Star Citizen has been funded, we’ve had a lot of questions about stretch goals. Many of you know the set of goals previously listed at the RSI site. They were broad design concepts that we needed additional funding to achieve. But quite frankly, they weren’t much fun for you and didn’t have enough concrete data!

So, we’ve heard you: our backers deserve a stretch goal system that isn’t just about game design but about rewarding our incredible community. To that end, we’ve developed two campaigns: one specifically for Kickstarter and one for the whole project. They still showcase our big ideas… but they also make the rest of the funding period about you.

The idea is that the money collected on Kickstarter and the money raised here on the RSI site will be pooled together and count towards the overall stretch goals which are listed here.

But, as added bonus, we’re running a Kickstarter set of stretch goals with are ADDITIVE to the overall stretch goals.

Our next goal is $750,000 on Kickstarter. That is within reach as I type this message! When we get there, every backer will start the game with a class I repair bot. Here’s the backstory:

The legend on the Saga Datasystems’ AMX-1 Repair Droid bot box says “a pilot’s best friend” and few experienced flyers would disagree. Thanks to a network of nine telescoping flex arms, the AMX-1 can access and repair any standard ship system with ease. Though it lacks the full speech boards and the emotional memory cores of more expensive models, the trademark whirring and beeping of an AMX is a welcome sound for anyone charting a path between the stars.

Next up is our main stretch goal: at $2.5 million we will add an additional flyable ship, the Anvil Gladiator, to the game. The Gladiator is the civilian variant of a powerful military bomber currently being used against the Vanduul on the frontiers of the galaxy. The Anvil’s pylons can support the heaviest grade antimatter torpedoes and it has up to a pair of turrets for protection during bombing runs. In short, they’re a capital ship’s worst nightmare!

Finally: we polled the community if it would be alright to extend the overall pledge campaign by ten days to match the Kickstarter and the answer was a resounding yes. So that’s what we’re going to do; it’s going to let us put together something special for when everything finishes on November 19 at 11 am PST!

So, lets get out there and earn some robots… and in the coming days, much more!

And again THANK YOU!

Chris Roberts

    Question:

Is it just people who pledged on Kickstarter who get the AMX-1, or eveyone who pledged on either site?

    Thanks and congrats!

Is the Gladiator similar to the Freelancer ship of the same name? Loved that baby for quite a while. :3

Yay, let’s go unlock some stretch goals!

  4. so we get our own R2 unit lol sweet

Definitely, Star Citizen is going to happen. Congratulations to everybody out there and special thanks to Chris Roberts and the other guys at Cloud Imperium Games. Just at this moment I upgraded my pledge. Let us hope that all those guys waiting for November 1st (clink clink) invest some extra bucks. Not only for new ships, but also for hiring someone to help Martin with the atmospheric music :)

I just don’t have the words to describe how excited I am about this game.
Everything I hear about it just makes it sound more and more amazing. A huge thank you to Chris Roberts and the rest of Cloud Imperium.

  13. This is awesome news….. GRATS all…. but im a little confused does the 2 mill mean we have Squadron 42 and Star citizen or just 42… reading the goals ( and i could be way off ) seems like 2 mill just gets the single player experience?

  14. WOOOO slow down there speed racers i haven’t even pledge once yet i am still waiting to get paid. so wait for me.

  15. Just confusing is all.. not sure i understand it right.. he could mean we dont get alpha/beta persistent world, just single and multi-dogfights..

Meaning we need 3 mil to get alpha testing of the whole game.

  16. It still doesn’t say I’m a subscriber at the time of this post, hope that updates soon. Very pleased ill one day be able to strap on a high-powered rocket sled again. I jest but I’m extremely excited for the future.

  17. Avatar of Dunnlang Dunnlang says:

The only thing I am “disappointed” about (and I use that term lightly) is that all the capital ships appear to be tied to Kickstarter. Capital ships are something I have been dying to see done right since the days of WC and Tie Fighter. I would have made my primary $250 pledge over at Kickstarter.

That said, every single one of these goals is exciting. I can’t wait to see how the alpha shapes up. I’ll spend weeks tweaking ship variations!

  18. WOOOHOOO I can finally get my fragged nav fixed :)

  19. Avatar of Miziricord Miziricord says:

    Coolio!
Can’t wait to see more details on the ship’ and stuff’ designs!

CR, you’re doing a great job, and we as a community will always support you, just keep rocking on!

  20. Avatar of Runciter Runciter says:

Will anyone seriously be encouraged to pledge or pledge more because of an in-game repair bot? I thought more money was supposed to fund more work. This is not how this is supposed to work…

    • Avatar of Eidolonius Eidolonius says:

Um, the reward is more work AND a repair bot.

    • Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

I think it is quite simple: those guys at Cloud Imperium Games want to reward us, the fan community, with something additional in exchange of our bucks (and backs :) ). That is, the full money flow is surely put into game production, BUT perhaps a developer can expend a few hours of extra-time at work, take a coffee and make a repair bot for us. Personally, I would like to have one of those in my ship for free. I do not want a myriad of blasting guns damaging my Origin300i ship :) Of course, if you do not want your repair bot, thanks a lot, friend! :)

  21. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

“We have investors that have agreed to contribute the balance we need to complete this game as long as we can validate that there is a demand for a high end PC space game. By meeting or surpassing our target on Kickstarter you tell the world that you want a PC based Space Sim and allow us to make this game.” It was also said before the Kickstarter campaign started. So… Where are these investors? Why we only will have those amazing things if achieving $5M+ by pledges? Those investors won’t help anymore?

    • Avatar of Jumper Jumper says:

He’s said previously that this only gets us these things AT LAUNCH. He’s still planning on adding them in, it’ll just take him longer without the additional money and support. We’ll still get everything he’s promised, we’ll just have to wait a tiny bit longer. I believe Cyco-Dude’s already been posting this exact thing up the comments, though.

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

i think the crowd-funding is to convince the investors to step in, as this game will take a lot more than what we raise to develop. anything past the 2M that we raise is just extra, which can be used for adding in more content (like more ships, more missions, more bases, etc).

      • Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

While I do not know the game industry so well, I think it is not so different (except where human emotions come into place :) ) from any other industry where technology is a key piece. Even those 5 M€ in 2 years is scarce cash for a company: I remember that Chris Roberts showed us in a table some average personnel costs and I do not have those figures at hand right now, but I remember that they fit to me, since here in Europe around 100.000 €/year is more or less the average cost of hiring a qualified technician (that includes his/her salary adding all the extras that the firm has to pay, such as taxes, medical insurance, indirect costs, etc). And we are talking of paying tallented people, subcontracting other highly qualified firms, and of course expeding time in convincing “business angels” and extra investors. That is a duty badly paid, I can ensure that. People expending 1 dollar want to reach another one in reward and hopefully they can wait some years for that extra dollar! :) I just put a question over the table: how many bucks have gone this year to nonsense or mediocre games? By the other way, the big lobbies in the entertainment industry are pushing us to consoles and so on, saying PC is dead… That is “pull-the-market” strategy. What the hell, WE ARE THE MARKET and we are saying loud and clear WE BELIEVE IN PC AND IN SPACE GAMING!!!! :) Swimming against the water flow means also expeding extra bucks. It would be nice that NVIDIA and some PC hardware manufacturers got involved in Star Citizen, since this game is helping them also…

  22. I’m just grateful for the passion.

yessss… star citicen with 3mio!! lets go for that!!!!

  24. Avatar of EntropyFree EntropyFree says:

I have now upgraded my pledge a 3rd time :)

*Proud owner of a new Anvil Aerospace Hornet*

  25. I love everything I hear every day about this game! If we hit the 2.5 mil does that mean that everyone gets the Gladiator? If so I can’t wait because those heavy bombers were my favourite rides in the old WC days. Keep up the great work Chris, you are the best developer I have found in all my days gaming. As an aside question, will there be capital ship combat like in Starshatter: The Gathering Storm?

    • Avatar of Kevin Lowe Kevin Lowe says:

It just says that they’ll build it; I’d guess that it’d be an add-on like the extra pledge ships (or an in-game purchase). I wouldn’t mind locking one of these in for myself – a Hornet and a Gladiator that I can never lose seem like they’d keep me in business for a long time.

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

most likely it will just be included in the game, not that everyone gets it. i also liked the bombers from the old wing commanders; my favorite was the broadsword from wing commander 2! triple mass drivers, three turrets, torpedos for killing capital ships…good stuff.

capital ship battles…i think that’s a possibility, ben mentioned they want to do a lot of co-op vs ai (ie, against the vanduul in the outer worlds). i don’t see why they couldn’t have capital ships…how awesome would that be if we could also have corvettes and destroyers too? :D

  26. Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

750,000 kickstarter goal should be met in 48 hours; 2,500,000 total should be met in about 60 hours. i fully expect 1M on kickstarter and 3M total in the end, at least. so look forward to robots, corvettes, 500 extra credits, a bomber, a longer sp campaign and the online universe!

  27. Avatar of Lukhar Lukhar says:

4 millions seems a lot…but 45 missions in single player campaign sounds very nice.. :)

  28. Avatar of Singularity Singularity says:

I was under the impression at 2 million we would get the persistent universe, so that comes at 3 million? I think we can make it!

  29. Avatar of Deathsnake Deathsnake says:

2.222.000 ATM ;) GO FOR IT.

Very Nice with all the news in the last hours. We get it. Chris can make the game the most of us wish. Even since the first Wing Commander in 1990. You guys can’t imagine how happy I am. The Start was a little confused. But we stay together as one! Now we have the first goals.

I want say Thank you to Chris and his team and thank you to you: the community. To make this game real!

QUESTION 1: If I pledge hier on the RSI Website and not on Kickstarter do I still receive the Repair Droid?

QUESTION 2: Do I have to pledge befor the strech goal is reached to receive the Repair Droid?
What happens If I pledge near the end of the funding campaign?

  31. Avatar of Shoep Shoep says:

I must say i really do like these stretch goals a lot better than the previous model.
    Thumbs up for RSI.

  32. Avatar of Steven Steven says:

i did my pledge we got you all the way Chris lets get it up to 6 mil everyone

  33. Avatar of Zabojnik Zabojnik says:

Time to upgrade my pledge! These new stretch goals sound great. I wish we’d get a new trailer in the next two weeks, even if it’s mostly a rehash of the first one, so more people would be made aware of Star Citizen.

  34. COWABUNGA!

Looks like it’s time to hit up Kickstarter for that robot!

And i agree with Zabojnik about new video footage to share around – it can be a screencast of Chris playing against those vanduls – probably with commentary: here we go, here we go.. Bang! Blasted!!

The point is – more teasing content to share around is great, even if it’s rehearsed old one;)

  35. Avatar of Schizm Schizm says:

  36. Avatar of Star Borg Star Borg says:

Just a word on design, physics, technology and science. I would love to see the spaceships / vehicles ect… designed as realistic as possible. As science and technology would permit. For example the 360 deg revolving radars on the big carrier as featured in the video look like they were borrowed from old aircraft carrier from the 1960′s. They wouldn’t even work as they don’t have clear line of site as at the back the radar view is blocked by a piece of structure. Another example. The small ship which Chris Roberts get’s into in the video has 2 large fans on the front. This is a bit unrealistic as since there is no air in space these are completely useless. I appreciated the detail which was dedicated to another game “mass effect” and I would love to see it happening in star citizen. How is gravity generated for example??? In space this is formed by having rotation: 1g at 1.5 rpm follow this link for more: http://news.discovery.com/space/project-hyperion-interstellar-worldship-design-121025.html#mkcpgn=emnws1 I would love to see this type of detail in star citizen. Thank you

    • Avatar of Star Borg Star Borg says:

One more thing….. There seems to be no vacuum effect. for example there are the guys instructing pilots to take off in the launch pad. they are wearing short sleeves….. Its this type of basic realism that seems to be missing. i hope that with additional funding these teething issues will be ironed out. i would love to hear from the devs about more about these points. thanks

      • Avatar of jlpicard2 jlpicard2 says:

Well, this is like Star Wars, or Star Trek, so I assume there is a force field of some time at the end of the “runway”. Also, both universes have some form of artificial gravity such as gravity plating.

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

realism sometimes takes a back seat to fun game play.

  37. Lets do it people, lets aim for $5 mil !!! to get the full game experience

  38. Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Awesome to hear! I like the new halfway stretch goals a lot, those make the distance to the next much shorter and can be a tremendous motivation boost.

This post also prompted me to update my little script which keeps track of the grand total of pledges (and shows how far away that next stretch goal is; please note, that I don’t track the additional KS goals at this time, if there is enough demand, I might add that too).

And now a question for a Cloud Imperium Games representative: are t-shirts off the table again? I’d really like to see an upgrade/add-on tier for a shirt/hoodie/etc.

    • Loved you script :-) .
I am also interested in T-shirt as well. I would prefer them from citizen card. Maybe there should be an option to replace citizen card with T-shirt….this will be nice.

I have already pledge for second time upgrading my level and I will definitely buy a second ship! Let’s reach some stretch goals….

      • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Glad that script is useful for others too!

As to trading in my Citizen Card: I don’t think I want that. The card is somewhat similar to the DocWagon card Shadowrun Returns’ Kickstarter had. And it is a physical tie-in to the game world. But I’d totally upgrade my pledge (again), for a cool shirt/hoodie.

    • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Thanks for all those e-mails, I’ve added the “additional KS goals” tracking feature. ;-)

Currently there are levels up to 2M USD recognized for KS, that was the last one I could decipher from the image on the KS campaign.

    • Avatar of Hood Hood says:

      Thanks for the script.
They shoud use somesting like this here and on kickstarter to show total funding!

      • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

        Glad you like the service!

Well, I understand why they are not: KS funding isn’t real until the campaign ends. And then there might be trouble with clearing all charges, because someone has overcharged their credit card. Hence I can see, why they might be hesitant to add those numbers and show it as their official total just yet.

  39. Town Hall meetings? In space or real world? I confused!

    • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

I would read that as either of “video stream with text chat back channel” or “text chat”. I don’t think it means everybody gets invited to a convention centre. That’d be a might difficult to attend for all the European backers. ;-)

Alternatively they could do it like Harebrained Schemes is doing it for Shadowrun Returns, though that would sort of lack the “town hall” part. Because they ask for the questions in their forum and then have Mitch and Jordan answer a selection on video, which gets posted to YouTube.

    • Avatar of Galleddrim Galleddrim says:

In space, of course. When we hit that milestone, Chris Roberts will appoint himself archon of the verse and deign to slum it out with us lowly backers. He will, of course, move from system to system in order to give a display of equity in his galactic dictatorship. ;)

  40. Avatar of TecArms TecArms says:

    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!

  41. Avatar of Timmy51m Timmy51m says:

I’m beginning to think they’re milking this. So far there’s only a handful of ships, it sounds to me like they want half a million bucks to make one more flyable ship. That’s rediculous, as is the suggestion that you can’t have a repair bot unless you cough up another quarter of a million bucks. What are they doing here, making the real thing? I fancy taking the michael more like.

If they designed this game like any other space sim, it would have a lot more ships than 5 or 6 and repair bots would be the norm, not an add on afterthought, it just wouldn’t sell without content. Black prophecy was crap in part because of a lack of ships, freelancer had closer to 30 flyable from the off.

    • Avatar of Cyco-Dude Cyco-Dude says:

dude, EVERY kickstarter does this. relax.

      • Avatar of Timmy51m Timmy51m says:

I am very relaxed, horizontal if you like. I don’t like these tactics one little bit though, they’re pulling the wool over peoples eyes.

I understood the stretch goals as they were, richer, deeper storyline etc and that made perfect sense to me as I could see the cost involved in animation, cinematics, voice acting etc, that shit costs a fortune and takes a lot of time.

This is bs carrot dangling though, half a mill for one extra ship and another quarter mill for a robot. At that rate the game is going to cost a few 100 mill to produce which is nonsense. They’re milking it, they can keep up these kinds of half mill add ons forever if all it takes is one extra ship to justify it and in return you get very little but a bigger dent in your pocket.

        • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Hm, you seem to focus on the “evil” side. Couldn’t it be, that the ship was part of the 3M USD tier and they thought, well we can do the ship earlier. So you get the ship even if the next full million tier isn’t reached.

Sure, it is a psychological trick. Because the distances between the stretch goals become smaller and people are more likely to give a bit more, if it nets them the next tier. But at the same time. But thinking about what you can offer earlier to keep the drive up to reach the higher stretch goals seems like something reasonable.

    • Think every small gift as the cherry in the cake….the big picture here is to reach the stretch goals in order to help the development of the game. Let’s assume that no stretch goal is achieved. I believe that all this will be deployed in the game in a later time and after the game will be released (propably in an expansion) but if we reach the stretch goals all this will be delivered in day one.

if If you have already baked and you can not afford or you do not want to contribute more it is OK but me and some others love this and we would like to contribute as more as we can. Thus every small detail that revealed by Chris helps towards this end.

    • Avatar of ijuin ijuin says:

Nothing says that the repair bot won’t be in the game. We’ll still be able to buy it with in-game money earned by doing merchant/mercenary type stuff–it’s just that with the 750k level everybody will start out with one “for free”.

    • Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Three things: 1. getting as much money as possible, seems to be reasonable for CIG. I’d do the same in their shoes. (It is a business and not the salvation army after all.)

      2. I’m pretty sure there will be more ships in future. But doing a game with a persistent universe, which puts emphasizes on player interaction and a progressing time line needs room to evolve. That includes new ship releases as well as the discovery of new star systems.

      3. I don’t think the announcement can be read as “only if we hit 750k on Kickstarter, we’ll get repair droids”. I read it as “if you’re a backer and the KS campaign hits at least 750k, all of you backers start with a basic repair droid”.

    • Avatar of Galleddrim Galleddrim says:

Dude, quite whining. Chris Roberts is running a business, and they have set milestone goals in the project just like anyone else. All of this stuff you see costs money to make, from the ships to the forum you’re using. It costs money to pay for electricity and utilities, game engine licenses, software, computers and to pay the people who are doing all the work.

He has basically given us the entire budget for the project. $5,000,000 for a fully fleshed out single player campaign with professional “celebrity” voice acting and a 45 mission campaign. Everything in between is a milestone. This is what crowd funding is about. We’re the investors. So we get to see the milestones.

If this was EA or Microsoft, we’d have no input, would never be told where they were in the development cycle, and we would just get whatever game they force feed us and hope it’s good.

  48. So I’m kinda confused, if we want to benefit from both funding methods (kickstarter and this site) do we hav eto pledge money on both? This question also aplies to the electro skin mod on the kickstarter site for the $5 minimum pledge.
