Thank You – Transition Plan

The battle is over and we—PC gamers, space sim fans, WingNuts, Lancers and the rest—have won. You’ve not only met every goal we set, you’ve exceeded them. Star Citizen will be released because of your dedication and your willingness to put your money where our mouths are. Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it.

The question is: what happens next?

Our intention has always been to make Roberts Space Industries YOUR site. It’s not a public advertisement for the game; it’s a private community for those who are making the game happen. We want your input on what we’re doing and we want to share our plans with you; the occasional passer-by doesn’t concern us. The plan was initially to immediately switch on a wall that would allow only you, our backers, to access features like the Comm-Link and the Spectrum Dispatches. Kickstarter has thrown something of a wrench in this plan: we can’t change the site until the Kickstarter backers are integrated, which may take up to two weeks, otherwise we would be blocking thousands of backers from participating.

Updates and features will continue, returning to a regular schedule in the next few days. The team needs a few days to collect ourselves and reform before jumping into the immense task ahead (after the last month, our husbands, wives, children and yes, pets, miss us!) We will also be launching new sections which have been in the works for some time: the Galactapedia will tell you more about the Star Citizen world, Engineering will introduce you to game mechanics that are being planned and Holovids will offer you video footage from the game as it takes shape.

What about pledges? Good news: those of you who got in on the ground floor are covered. Your ships have lifetime insurance policies and for the next year you will have the ability to purchase further tiers or upgrade existing ones at the initial prices. That’s not true of everyone else: if you want to back Star Citizen and participate in this amazing community, you still can… but it’s going to cost you a little extra as of now, and you aren’t going to have as many extras (no lifetime insurance, for example.)

One issue which concerns us is what to do with the funding tracker. So we’re going to throw the issue up to you: in two weeks, when the wall goes up, what do you want to see done with the tracker? Without the ‘push’ of the campaign it probably won’t update very dramatically… but it’s always possible it will go up enough to reach future stretch goals anyway. Should we keep it, remove it or put it somewhere else? We’ll let the community decide.

What should we do with the counter after the campaign?

  • Keep it up! We want to go for those upper stretch goals! (68%, 14,279 Votes)
  • Take it down - the focus should be on the game now. (21%, 4,325 Votes)
  • Move it to another site so it's not on the front page. (11%, 2,419 Votes)

Total Voters: 21,023

We also have previously outlined the ‘behind the screens’ subscription plans available now. They’re designed for users who simply want to give us a little extra support during the development—you’re getting the whole story, regardless—but we will have some extra fun for our monthly contributors.

We can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for this project. Please see the next update on ‘The Pledge’ for our promise to you. The next two years are going to be incredible for all involved and we’re thoroughly happy that all of you are along for this exciting ride.

  12. So I’ve never done any kickstarter or crowd funding before so i don’t know how this is suppose to work. I’ve looked around but cant find an answer.

I’ve pledged at kickstarter and have no clue how this transition prossess is going to work. Does it get automatically updated? Or are we given a code or key that we copy and paste to the RSI site?

Why keeping the wall and updates private to backers? Share the love the whole world!
I didn’t pay to have exclusive information, I paid to see this game succeed and play it… and it has more chances to happen if you can keep a lot of people interested by posting PUBLIC updates. Cheers.

    • I have to say this makes sense to me… A members only section would be nice but not the whole site.

I believe that Chris wants to work much closer with the people that want this project to succeed, even go above and beyond. The pledge itself is an expression of support and dedication of those people.

By doing it his way, Chris honors the pledgers and keeps them involved in the development process, not unlike a sounding board. The alternative is to include the general public in this process which may or may not have the same dedication or interests.

The pledgers however put their money where their mouth is and that is a more sincere statement than what you hear and see from the average Joe’s out there.

      • Avatar of N. E. Opera N. E. Opera says:

This is true. We are now the investors with a say in what happens, to a limited extent. We are also a focus group that reflects the core audience intended. Some fiction published outside the wall would definitely help to attract late backing from those unfortunate enough to have interest but be late to the party. Can’t hurt.

    • Avatar of Max Smalls Max Smalls says:

Also, they stated people will still be able to buy into the community, just more expensive, and no permanent insurance. I thought I read that they aren’t closing the whole site… just parts of it.

Cannot wait for this to come out now. I just found out this past Saturday and sooo excited already. Got the T-Shirt, 35 buck digital package, the 5 buck pirate skin, and the centurion subsciption. If I had more money I would have gladly got more. I used to think of stuff like GW2 and Hawken as games to tide me over until ESO comes out, now I think of ESO as something to tide me over until SC comes out!

  19. Avatar of Deerool Deerool says:

What should I say? Go, Chris, go. You got the money. Now it’s your turn to give the players all you have promised. We belive in you that you (and your team) could do this and we really want to see what can deliver to the community.

It’s getting hard to contact back to our old community couse its being long time since we quit Freelancer and closed our private server, but I’m sure all of them will be around here sooner or later and all will be thrilled with this huge project and achievement.
Lets all be proud of this and let the team have their more than deserved rest.

First of all Congratulations to Chris, Sandi, Eric, Martin, Ryan Church, Josh Strike, Dave Haddock and the rest of the Star Citizen team, especially Ben Lesnick, who hopefully is getting some much-needed sleep!

It’s been really cool to watch this thing unfold and the last 24 hours were a lot of fun(except for the web site developer). When RSI stated the goal was 2 million, I held my breath and hoped but wondered if it wasn’t a bit unreal. Then things got better and as the numbers and goals got bigger, I kept thinking, “It’s gotta run out of steam soon.” Then we hit 5 million and I started thinking, maybe this can go all the way. The stretch goals sounded like fun but I really didn’t think we’d get there.

Suddenly, we were at 6 million! Can you believe it? I predicted 6.244 and I thought that was pushing it. Now look where we are. This is my first crowd-funding event. I spent more money on this than I’ve ever spent on any game, ever, but I thought it was worth it to back Chris’s vision. So, thanks to everyone who kicked in to make this happen. You guys are awesome and I can’t wait to fly with you in Chris’s new universe.

Finally, thanks to Chris Roberts. Wing Commander is the reason I became a PC gamer in the first place. I’ve played WC 1, 2, 3 & 4, Academy, Armada, Prophecy, Strike Commander, Privateer 1 & 2, Starlancer and Freelancer. Chris has literally given me years of entertainment and had me jazzed to grab my joystick every time. :)
I just wanted to say thanks to Chris for all the fun, laughs, combat & entertainment over the years, and I look forward to geeking out about Star Citizen and Squadron 42 in the years to come.

    Thanks for the good times.

I was there all the way from my golden ticket prior to announcement to just after they reached 5.5 million before I went to pass out.

I am very happy to see that they got they 6 million they wanted to make Chris’ idea into a reality. It is really great to see the community come together and show that we still have faith in this genre.

Only thing I would like to add is a THANK YOU to all the PLAYERS and community who made the funding campaign a success. Without us, this game would never have gotten the funding it needed to be made, and I am glad to be a part of that success.

It is now up to Chris Roberts and his team to make his vision a reality. I have the utmost confidence that we will get what he has imagined, and possibly more.

      Great job to everyone!

    • very well said Tiger Claw. Privateer was my first pc-game and my first “love”, and I never stopped playing or loving that game. After came all the others, that made me a die hard fan of space sims. I really cant wait to see this come to life. See you in the stars :)

    • Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

Well said. Even when I have not played all the space games made by Chris Roberts (yet the essential ones: WC-1&2, Starlancer and FREELANCER), I fully agree with you. When we were at 2 million, I said in many posts we were going to score higher than 5 million, so now I have a dream made real (Star Citizen) and a new job (prophetizer :) ).

    • Avatar of Loose Nugget Loose Nugget says:

      Very well said.

Above and beyond the great games and endless hours of entertainment that Chris and his teams have provided, I feel particularly indebted to them.

After installing the original Wing Commander in 1990 (from 5.25″ floppies), I quickly realized that I needed a little more horsepower – my 25 MHz 286 wasn’t going to cut it. We couldn’t afford a whole new PC so, at the ripe old age of 14, I set off to upgrade my PC bit by bit, on my own, with my own allowance, and with no prior knowledge of what was involved. After realizing that I also needed a sound card, CD-ROM drive, more memory, etc, I grabbed whatever reading materials I could find and dove right in with jumpers, chip pullers, IRQ charts, and motherboard in hand…thus began my long adventure into the world of PC assembly, upgrades, and custom gaming rigs

…and I haven’t stopped since. The only difference is, now I get paid for it.

This mere game was responsible for carving out my hobbies growing up, my education, my career choice, and ultimately, the success I now enjoy in my professional life.

Thank you, thank you, 1000 times thank you.

So, we will hold our flightstick and not any sand princess or suit for us….this generation of gamers, years after, have come back to give power to the person that brought us the real AAA Space Opera games…that sadly besides a few exceptions the industry of all genres has failed to present.

I only ask for this moment, a thought from everyone…a moment of silence….to remember Captain Eisen…Jason Bernard….his figure in the series was also a pivotal figure in the total experience from playing Chris games…and dedicate it to him, and possibly a Battlecruiser as well too!

    • *Accompanies Averof in his moment of silence*

      *After it’s done*

To honour all of them. Eisen. Angel, Rachel, Vagabond… my old friends. Even Maniac, Paladin and yes, Tolwyn.

Awesome news! I’m so looking forward to watching this develop :)
Will the various upgrades and in particular ships we purchase throughout the next year (and thankyou for that) still be covered by our lifetime insurance?

    • Avatar of Dingo Dingo says:

Chris commented saying that only the pledgers who bought ships during the fundraising event will get the lifetime insurance, anything bought after this does not have that, though you never know, that could change.

      • Avatar of Tyr Annus Tyr Annus says:

He said that new pledgers dont get that option. Anyone who has allready pledged 30 dollars or more still gets the option to buy ships with lifetime insurance

        • Avatar of tzimize tzimize says:

I would love some clarification on this.

I got the double digital pack (2 digital copies of the game) on kickstarter. By that I guess I qualify for lifetime insurance on my ship?

I am considering upgrading that though, and it would be a real carrot if backers that joined before the curtain fell could upgrade their lifetime insurance/ship.

Official clarification needed and wanted. Feel free to point me in the right direction if it already exist.

Other than that…good work everyone! Now I only need a way to kill 24 months.

        • Avatar of Kimmie Kimmie says:

That is my hope. I am thinking of adding a few ships to my account, and hope they will have lifetime insurance just as my Const does.

        • Avatar of Adamanter Adamanter says:

Exactly, all ships baught before the funding campaign end are lifetime insured. New backers will have to pay more for ships and won’t have lifetime insurance.

          • Avatar of cyphyr cyphyr says:

Yes but the question still remains, what of ships bought in the year to come by people who already have bought one ship be fore the end of campaign.

          • Avatar of Adamanter Adamanter says:

Oh!. I meant who bought ships before funding campaign end has got lifetime insurance. So any ship we buy after will have lifetime insurance too and prices will be the same along this first year, also we’ll have free hangars for those ships.

          • Avatar of Max Smalls Max Smalls says:

Yeah, I’d like to know as well. I have a Constellation but am thinking of adding a Hornet. If there’s no lifetime insurance on the Hornet, I’d rather just wait and earn one in game.

I am very excited to be involved (even in so small of a way) with this endeavor.

Finley a chance to break the corporate mold, finely a chance to lift the chains of oppression off of my beloved PC. Finley a chance to champion a developer who spits in the eye of the publisher stooge. Finley a chance to shout to the suits “You shall not dumb down my PC, you shall not have another COD!! Nah you shall have the GLORY of my unrestricted PC!!” ….and all it took was a little money.

In all seriousness I have great hopes for this project. Its my hope that in the next few years we shall bear witness the birth of a epic space Sim.

May you all join me in raising your glasses in a toast “All hail Roberts, all hail us the Star Citizen”

I’m glad to be backing such a worthy endeavor! I really hope that, when there is time, the Pledges and Add-Ons will be updated for backers to upgrade to say.. the Avast Matey, Wingnut and Lancer Digital packages and anything else that currently isn’t available under the Pledge Upgrade or Add-On area. I really hope to upgrade to another package as I started with just the basic $35 to ensure I could “lock in” during times of site trouble! I really appreciate all these options and existing prices being available for backers for the foreseeable future. I just have a few questions and suggestions.

First, I’d like to suggest something for those who want to really support the game but can’t afford to shell out for $500+ packages all at once. Its great you’ve added the Subscription $10 and $20 options. It seems to me it would be EXTREMELY well received if those monthly $10/20 payments are tracked on the account and added to one’s original pledge, and will count towards Upgrades and Add-Ons! Since there is quite some time before the release of the game, this would definitely encourage a large amount of backers to subscribe if for instance… they could subscribe to the $20 subscription for 5 months and then be able to say add… a Pirate Pack to their account! Tons of fans would continue to contribute if they could roll these contributions into be able to purchase Pledge Upgrades and Add-Ons. It may be difficult for many players to drop $100-500 or more at once, but many could “get there” over time if their investment would result in upgrading their basic $35 purchase to “The Man” package they’ve been eying since crowdsourcing!

Second, what happens if someone started with say, a package that gave them a White Citizen’s Card, and then upgrades after the holiday season to one that gives them a Green, Bronze, Silver etc… they’ll be upgraded to the new Card as well, correct, both in a physical and digital form?

Lastly, In light of the rousing success of backing Star Citizen, many of us in the Linux gaming community would hope that you could please put Linux compatibility on the “to do” list as development continues. If nothing else, please consider using open technologies for development that would make porting to Linux (and OSX etc…) easier, such as an option for rendering in OpenGL as opposed to DirectX, OpenCL and whatnot for physics etc… Many of us are a bit worried that CryEngine3 lacks Linux compatibility and that will mean that it will be harder to bring the title to Linux in the future. Its easy to see that using open APIs when possible can do a lot to make a future Linux version easier, or even the use of something like WINE. Linux gaming is growing (especially with Steam for Linux on the way) and the Linux gaming community is much like the Space-Sim community; Oft passed over, yet dedicated and willing to support those that take the time to support our interests. As shown by the HumbleBundle and many Indie titles, the Linux gaming community can be counted on to generously support those who support our platform and ethics (ie. minimal or non-existent DRM etc.) of preference. Here’s hoping to see Star Citizen on Linux one day soon!

    Thanks again!

    • Avatar of Max Smalls Max Smalls says:

Chris has mentioned in prior interviews that he has talked with the CryTek team and they are interested in porting to Linux and OSX. May be available by the time we go gold but he doesn’t want to promise something outside his control.

Reaching triple the set goal amount is an acheivement in and of itself, and only goes to prove how right you are about the communitys’ existence and need for a top-notch, high-end space sim.

Well done to you and your team, for having the vision and the determination to make the game, and to everyone who pledged, whether it was $5 or $5000, for doing their bit to make it a reality.

Once upon a time, I built my first computer just to play Wing Commander 3 & it about killed me(no IT training yet). But to be able to play that game and the host of Chris Roberts games to follow made building PC’s worth it & something to look forward too. I’ve built rigs since his last game, but I can say I’m really looking forward to building this one. Man, to think I’m going build a new rig(just for this video game) & to turn my office into a cockpit… It’s hard to believe how cool all this is & how so many people have come to together make this happen. Oh, the Mrs is going to just love this…lawls…

$6.2 Million, that’s a crazy sum of money to raise in such a short period of time for something that’s not feeding someone or putting clothes on someone back, wow. It’s just amazing and goes to show you that the gaming industry has been geared toward to console crowd(& low quality, over priced games)for too long… The game consoles have become complacent with themselves and game developers, causing stagnation in the quality of what games could be now a days(the technology is there) and I’m really excited that we have a chance to be apart of all this; a community.(‘And to be apart of something that is not a FPS!)

Perhaps this in some small way will promote the idea that not everyone wants to be confined to a 5 year old console, tablet, or phone to play their casual social games on or maybe this will get some publicity and media will introduce a kick ass space Sim to a new generation.

I look forward to the host of updates that will come down the pipe over the next two years and the conversations and ideas that might have an impact on the mother ship that is Chris Roberts’ love child…

Congratulations RSI, you hit a lofty goal… Good luck to your team & be safe…

  62. Avatar of Addle Addle says:

I would like to propose that the site continue to be designed with the pledger audience in mind, but please, please don’t put up any barriers to the content updates. We pledgers have our cool ships and other bonuses, but it would be even more fun to be able to show off what we’re getting and the progress that’s being made. The level of communication with the backers sounds like it will be revolutionary in and of itself, and that’s something that as a gamer I’d really like to see more of from all game developers – an example of that from RSI for other devs and raised expectations from gamers like us would go far toward reaching that goal.
I also want to see as many new people as possible getting on-board with Star Citizen. The content updates and communication won’t be changing anyone’s minds if there is no exposure to people who aren’t already sold at this point.

I want people to see my ship flying past them and them going green with envy, followed by a new goal to get such a beauty of their own. The same could be true with this site: developing it for paying customers first is really refreshing and I didn’t realize how obviously cool that would be until I read it. But don’t put any curtains on the windows; instead, let everyone else put their faces on the glass and look in until they decide to open the door, come on in, and share in the wealth. We don’t have anything to lose and only more to gain by letting everyone see as much of the update content as possible.

    Thank you!

I fully agree with you. We have already got our rights as backers and for newcomers, they should earn their citizenship harder than us :) I think that the universe must be open to any curious (perhaps only development issues must be restricted). We all want a big Star Citizen community and this is going to be such an awesome game that we must be proud to show to anyone :) LONG LIVE SQUADRON 42. Meet you (all) in space!

  63. Amazing! Hopefully this sends a signal to the gaming world that will shake them to the core and hopefully cure consolitis that plague the pc game world once and for all!

  64. Damn. I still need to eat to live. Guess I will have to stop playing occasionally.

  65. A little late to the party as I only learned of this project today. I will have the coin to put something down on this next week, and then we start building towards the sweet machine that will bring this baby to life. Huzzah!

Wing Commander was the crown jewel of my collection as a young pc gamer, and 20 years later still a reminder of how even a 5.25″ floppy can hold a universe that grips you and doesn’t let go, lovingly crafted from a vision and the passion to see it through. When you landed on the deck of the Tiger’s Claw after a tough mission and you saw your ship wasn’t beat all to hell, you felt like a damn hero. Roberts made games you didn’t just play but ones you connected with… became a real part of. I have total confidence that he and his team can change the way we experience games, again. Good luck Chris, and thanks for everything.

I say we put that funding tracker on the “wall” right under the RSI logo and below the tracker the backers login text fields. Let it stand there as message to all the would be doubters and nay sayers of the PC Gamers. Let it deny entry to those who have jumped ship and went to the band wagons of the console “wanna be” games. But most of all, let it shout that the PC Games are not dead and we will not go quietly into the night and settle for the crap these megalith companies try to shove down our throats as “good”, “ported” games.

Thank you very much Chris Roberts and RSI for this vision and bringing this community of like minded gamers together. We all know with every goal surpassed and everyone striving to help, that this will be the greatest PC Game for the PC Gamer ever.

The best way to show the Big game companies that their product is not acceptable, is not to buy it. By giving them your money, you validate their design and distribution philosophy and provide them with funds to continue doing it. Also by buying one or both of the Star Citizen t-shirts and parading it around at the gaming conventions in front of those expensive booths.
Most CEOs are way out of touch and are surrounded with yes-men, Chris and RSI have stepped up and given us the platform to use our money and time to show Game Corporations their business model is not the golden goose they thought it was.

Awesome that we raised this much. Am I the only one, though, just a little worried about the, “It’s not a public advertisement for the game; the occasional passer-by does not concern us,” comment? I mean, by all means have a members-only area but why restrict the message? In the next two years there will be gamers who discover this game and never heard of its crowdsourcing drive. Why punish them and keep them locked out of a great developing game? Seems like a shot in the foot kind of attitude.

    • Avatar of Toast Toast says:

sounds a bit harsh, I might have to agree – but as long as new registered members aren’t lumped with the passers-by, it may not really be as harsh as it sounds.

    • Avatar of Odyssey 2001 Odyssey 2001 says:

I think there is some mis-interpretation here. its not that he does care about new users, He does, anyone who want to be part of this dream project is more than welcome its just that there main focus will be on the game and keeping the integrity of the backers from what was promised and said during the pledge period.

The statement “It’s not a public advertisement for the game” says a lot actually.
It was about having a dream of a game that would break all sim boundaries and reaching out to others to make it a reality without having to to through big publishing backers that would just end up using every aspect of the game and its making to get as much money as possible with little or no regard to its integrity or to its pledgers and/or dream.

“occasional passer-by” means They are not interested in watering down, simplifying or metaphorically prostituting themselves and/or the game ( like a big publishing company would ) in anyway just to make a few extra sales!!!

    • Avatar of ionn ionn says:

My take on that comment is that this is a project for the whole community in which our continued feedback and suggestions will help guide the rules of engagement of the game, and possibly more depending on the resources and time the developers have. If someone comes in and states the game is not turning into what they had foreseen, offers no constructive & cooperative dialog, and after a bit of chest beating leaves and is rarely heard from if ever.
The game isn’t being made for, what some might refer to as, trolls.
When the forums are back, the developers will read what we want, update us on the what they intend and will ask for our impressions and as you have seen provide us with polls. Many of the stretch goals that we attained with the increase in funding were devised based on what people were requesting in the various channels on communication.

      • Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

And more importantly, feedback, ideas, concepts etc. were presented early and readily backed up with money when the project needed it most.

This is important for two reasons: the pledges enable Chris and the crew to work their magic in the first place. The early feedback, ideas and suggestions allow them to develop the game in the right direction without costly ‘experiments’.

  72. Avatar of Toast Toast says:

    Hey there Austin,
First of all, i have to tell, how impressed I am. Space Sim is definitly not dead… And if the Space Sim Community is going to war on the big publishers, i can’t imagine a better man in the front, than Chris Roberts… Everybody who was keeping his cents together to get an upgrade from 4 to 8 MB of system memory to be able to play WC3 knows how we got gratly repaid with the game… If, or not all the stretch goals or ideas gathered in the crowd funding campaign wil be in the final game, I don’t care… In this matters I trust Chris Roberts, to do, what’s neccessary to build a great game. As for me, it’s much more important, how the community is taken in development. I had a dream… a dream of a game, where somebody makes a game, the community wants. Maybe this is the one. So there’s a lot of trust (over 6.3 Mio $ trust) in Chris Roberts, our hero of the old days. Do it again!

I love Space Sim games, and space (spaaaa-a-ace), built my own cardboard space shuttle once when I was 8, but the duct tape gave out after a couple weeks. I’m looking so forward to this game and the Mod Tools, as I’ve wanted something like this since playing X-Plane and later Laminar Research’s orphaned Young’s Modulus which I had hoped would grow into something with a better environment and improved mechanics.
Thanks for conceiving of this game and congratulations to you, Chris, and the whole team that is there with you supporting your vision and adding their own talents to create what is already proving at this early stage capable of making the cynic in me piqued and agog.
I want to romp in the playground your setting up. You have shown that you care about what is to be presented to us when the pieces are ready and balanced to chalenge and engage us.

It’d be pretty cool if they had a custom one that matched UEE paint scheme. Would be pretty cool too if we could get a specially designed HOTAS that matched the cockpit design of a ship and had cool interaction with the game like Steel Battalion had a couple years back.

  83. Exactly what do they consider insurance. Example do we keep our initial ship no matter how many times we lose it, or do we credits after losing it to help buy another? I’d like to know exactly what the insurance plan is.

    • Avatar of Odyssey 2001 Odyssey 2001 says:

Yes, Your pledge ship is your default ship, So if you bought a lancer then when you get killed you start off again with a lancer or what ship or chips that in your hanger.:)

Q1: Will you be able to freely roam and explore the actual solar system? If yes, to what level of detail (clouds, belts, moons, …); If no: What parts will you be able to go to?
[I've heard before that there WON'T be free roaming, but this was back when they were reaching for the 2 million goal]

Q2: Will you be able prepare for battle or (opposite) show you are no harm? Like raising shields but not weapons, or have them both powered but WITHOUT aiming at your enemy. Also, will you be able to see if your opponent has it’s weapons powered / is aiming at you?

    • Avatar of Odyssey 2001 Odyssey 2001 says:

Q1:Yes, that’s the privateer side of the game as part of persistent universe. Detail is anyone guess at this point in the development.

Q2: He mentioned that he wants it to be as close to real life as possible so knowing if your opponent has his/her shields up or down or if he/she is targeting you would depend on your ships detection system. depending on what kind of ship you have you might need to purchase an upgrade :)

One thing I am not sure about is how the add-on ships work. Do they fly with you using AI ( AI escort ) until they get blown up? or can you also use them to start a mission with?

And if you have more than one ship that are not add-ons, can they escort you using AI as well?

For instinct, You have a “Come Fly With Me” constellation ship and the “Avast Mateys (digital)” pirate package with the cutless. can you start with the constellation and have the cutless as an escort support fighter?

hmmm. something we need to think about.

I’m a massive fan, and i’ve been PC gaming since Enchanter on the commodore PET lol. the WC games and their descendants were easily some of the most memorable titles i’ve played. proud to have pledged and super curious about what my golden ticket will mean!

but I’m a little concerned about all this insurance talk …

so if a ship is destroyed, then by default it’s gone forever? i can see that being very disheartening for players who work for months to get a nice ship then have it immediately destroyed because someone with a better ship was trolling … i’d prefer to see something like a disabled ship requiring credits or time to repair … also with garaging, does that mean if i’m gone for 3 months because work’s crazy, or i’m on holiday, then all my ships will disappear (if i haven’t paid up)?

i don’t know if anyone here ever played ogame … kind of a space commander sim in-browser, no actual flying but everything’s real time. which meant it took literally years to get to #20 in my system. then from out of the blue one day, one of the bigger players wiped out all my fleets and planets in a meticulously planned ninja attack. he’d been tracking my movements for months. i’d invested considerable time into building it all up and overnight everything was gone! never played it again. i wouldn’t want to have that experience with this particular title!

    • Avatar of Max Smalls Max Smalls says:

I would imagine the ships start with some time period of free insurance to avoid Grand Theft Auto syndrome where no one uses their garaged vehicle because they’d lose it. Also, hopefully you can replace them at a discount if you don’t have insurance.

      • Avatar of bug bug says:

but the fact insurance can expire and ships can be lost … i’m assuming it’s going to take hard work to get good gear, i just think completely losing a ship is a pretty harsh penalty for what could even come down to a simple lapse of concentration.

And yes GTA is a prime example, i remember one time when my partner’s nephew came to stay, he got into my games and when he’d left i noticed one of my indestructible cars were gone! so gutted! if you know what i’m talking about you know how hard it was to attain these lol!

  107. I’m unsure as to whether you intentionally are belittling the people who have followed this game for some time but have been unable to fund it or not but I would consider carefully your wording in future. I, as I would imagine like many others, am unemployed and have bills to pay and mouths to feed and cannot afford to contribute to the Crowdfunding/Kickstarter campaign yet you deem us as unimportant “Casual passer-by”. I believe in this game, I want this game to work because it’s far more important than the sum of its parts. It represents a clear message to developers the world over that there is a real appetite for high-end, quality PC-only products. That we have had enough of our platform being treated as an afterthought with bad Xbox ports and if they wish to see a rise in PC games again, they need to treat our platform with respect. This belief is no less strong than someone who contributed $10K to the project.

But just because I am unemployed and unable to contribute financially should not mean I’m treated differently from a community perspective than those who have been able to provide funding have their bonuses. They have purchased their life time insurance, fancy skins and all manner of other items I will never have access to but that does not mean I have anything less to contribute.

So please, do not treat the rest of us with contempt that is clearly shown within this update. The financially constrained amongst us are still believers, will still purchase the finished product and are deserving of equal respect. To do otherwise is to risk a two-tier community which is ultimately self defeating.

    • Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

Look, this project had a time limited funding campaign. This was done to prove its feasibility to the private investors. Now the point here is, money pledged during the campaign had the most impact in that it enabled Chris and the crew to bring those investors aboard which would pay the other important half of the bill.

That also means the pledges and first impressions, feedback, ideas etc. in that period were absolutely crucial. Now that the project is literally overfunded, even beyond the wildest dreams of Chris, the point has been made by and to all involved.

The RSI campaign got extended mostly because the fans either wanted to keep up support past the 30+ days or were stuck in a situation similar to yours. If it wasn’t for the fans, you could’t even pledge anymore to help support the game. Please take that into consideration before you start feeling isolated again.

    • Avatar of Max Smalls Max Smalls says:

They are going to still allow you to pledge and join the community. Just will cost a little more. What he was getting at was that they are not going to shamelessly do what it takes to try to get everyone who visits the site to give them money like a big publisher would. I really don’t see the big deal here and yes, I’m between jobs as well. For now…

By the time two years is gone my nice new build will be obsolete. Can’t wait to build a new PC just for this game!

Congratz on the fundraising. It was fun watching you folks hit $6M.

I feel so grateful to have been given a chance to support and play a part in the creation and evolution of this project.
    Thanks RSI team.
All the best to you <3 <3

CR, please make “trails” behind the fighters and smokes as an graphic option and not as an part of graphics. These trails remind me of console-like games…

I just want to thank the lamp for answering all my inane questions. Glad you will be in the game.

Congratulations on the (ever increasing) crowd funding record and kudos for recovering so quickly =)

Since the fans have exceeded all expectations by nailing all the stretch goals, is it possible to give them a few more to tackle?

Also, there is some sort of consternation among new pledgers as to why they are about to get walled from the development process. Maybe a compromise can be found to reduce/remove that wall and continue to grow the fanbase?

I’m asking for this primarily because this game wasn’t so much as a blip on IGN’s radar. On first glance it seems that ‘other ventures’ in this direction have proven way more successful, especially the contributions and articles of some fans.

It could very well be that only now, after various records were blown to pieces by Star Citizen, more people start to give this game some proper credit, which in turn brings more space game fans into the fold. Just a thought.

    Cheers =)

Must feel good to get such support! Now make it happen! you’ve dreamt big , now do bigger. Give us a simulation. i want to feel what its like to not only fly a ship, but control it and explore. To live in space….I think you’re going to do it. See ya there.

  120. AWESOME I am excited for the testing phase!

  121. Avatar of Pirate88 Pirate88 says:

I’ve never been so excited as the first time I bought Wing Commander an spen all night tweeking MsDos 4.0 to run the game. Glad your back in the game Chris, good luck and may your team have the fortitude and patience to survive this fantastic ride.

  122. Congratulations on reaching one of the highest pledge drive totals, and getting this game funded by it’s spaceship fans.

Query: Will you make a total overview what stretch goals we all unlocked on RSI as well as the KS site ?

Again well done, the stars are the limit now :)

  123. OK, we have now committed, I only hope that we are kept up to date and get to see more and more build out as time goes slowly by… I will donate more and get upgrades once I have more to grab onto. Please prove the Corporate beast wrong and make this a sick (great) game and so much more than EVE online and Star Trek.

Maybe a 3D version?? I will have my 2 24″ screen awaiting the alpha!!

  124. Avatar of J. Haxby J. Haxby says:

I absolutely cannot wait for this game, being a massive sci-fi fan i’ve always believed that there should be a space simulator where the player in in control of everything and not limited by linear storylines or gameplay. Star Citizen looks like it is going to be everything i’ve wanted.

Thank you RSI and Chris :)

  125. Avatar of INF_HawKEYE INF_HawKEYE says:

Im so pleased that all targets were met, i know that RSI will do an outstanding job and will bring joy to us all.

I want to thank YOU ALL in helping RSI to make sure that this project got on the way as the space sim has been set aside far to long.
2 years seams a long time to go but hopefully will pass quickly.

I was going to update my PC this year but now ill add some more pledges for this year and save money during the 2nd year for a new PC (ready for the launch :) )

    WELL DONE ALL, GREAT JOB!!

  126. Chris, thank you so much for this. I have waited so many years for another game… Ahem… Space flight sim like this one. I’m only 15 and I don’t know anyone else my age into this sthing like I am. Ever sense I was 10 discovered my dads old Freelancer somewhere on a shelf, I had waited, hoping some big publisher would make a game worth my PC’s weight in parts. Not one. But know this, all I can possibly say is thank you and your team for reassuring old Lancer’s, WingNuts, and the like that PC is NOT dead. I pledged my $35. Now all I can do is wait and let you do your part. And once again, thank you. Hans.

  127. Hi,please make a German spoken Corner on this Site.I Think there was also many Supporters from German spoken Countrie`s too.(sry for my English, hehe)

  130. Avatar of Frank Frank says:

Wow, I really thought the Bengal would be out of reach until some days before the campaign end… Luckily I was proven wrong :)

Hopefully the Pirate Clan around a Bengal will just take my cargo. Many people are running this thing and the defences in shifts. Around it are a bunch of cruisers and corvettes, also manned this way. And do not forget the people flying all the fighters on the landing deck.

I hope the owner of a big ship is able to transfer the controls to other people, because she or he needs to care about family, work, eat and sleep, too (in this order ;)

  131. Avatar of Firedorn Firedorn says:

Congratulations and thank you for bringing such an ambitious project to the crowd funding scene.

I believe we can finally get a PC game that hearkens back to the quality of games from its’ heyday. I can’t wait to get some more information about the game, the content, the lore, the settings, specs and all the meat around the bone…and finally sink my teeth into it when the time comes out to test it out and polish it.

Take us out to the stars!

  132. Avatar of Jericho Jericho says:

Congrats, y’all! Remember, if development gets tough, we’ve got your backs! :D

  133. Avatar of DaftMule DaftMule says:

Can’t believe i only stumbled across this game today! Was taken with it enough to throw a few quid in the pot. Excited to see the fruits of the teams labours come alpha.

For old farts like me (hell…i still use the arrow keys!) this is what game dev should be about. The developers listening to what the players want and what they know is right rather than focusing on lining the corporate pockets. More power to your elbow Chris.

  134. Avatar of Godwin Godwin says:

Thanks to all fellow fans for sharing the dream and being willing to back it up :)
Thanks to the Star Citizen team for all their efforts and excellent customer service!
Thanks to Chris Roberts for being the drive behind it all!

Let’s make this a wonderfully fun and friendly community, not only before launch but also afterwards. Star Citizens AHO!

  135. Avatar of Nterl0k Nterl0k says:

Wing Commander was one of the main reasons I became a gamer, I owe Chris Roberts a huge debt of gratitude which cannot be measured…. My paltry contribution to Star Citizen doesn’t seem quite enough for all the enjoyment I have received from the WC series(and it’s ilk). Keep up the fantastic work, and I look forward to the continued awesomeness.

For so long i have been mocked for only owning a PC and not a console while all the pro console ppl get good games and we only get shotty ports like dark souls when this game comes out i will proudly mock all those ppl who only play on console
    LONG LIVE THE PCGAME

  137. Avatar of Emu Emu says:

Three months ago I thought I would NEVER see a game like Freelancer again. Now I’m part of a crowdfunding campaign that managed to raise over $6 million to bring back a genre I loved so much. The next 24 months are going to be ridiculously awesome.

Also: While I know that RSI has no specific $6 million stretch goals, I think I speak for a lot of people if I say that we would like to see seamless transitions from space to atmosphere + atmospheric flight.

  138. Avatar of Planck Planck says:

I never spent so much in a single game in all my life. But despite being a poor student, I want to say it was well worth it.

I’m usually skeptic when it comes to promises, but after seeing all the work you’ve already done, all the information we got (despite the game still being in a sort of planning phase) and the attention you’ve given us, although limited because of the chaos of the last days and the huge amount of people asking questions, I was convinced.

Because of your dedication, ideals and vision I have faith you guys will deliver the best results for this game. Thanks to Chris Roberts and all the team that helped make this possible, and thanks to all my fellow backers too!

We did it! Long live Star Citizen!

  139. Avatar of Tin Can Tin Can says:

Unfortunately my financial limit is already maxed out ATM.
How fortunate, that I’ll be able to back you more when I am able again, and even with the same conditions I originally pledged!
    Hands down for that! :)

After following you through the backing process and observing how you include the community into the developing process I’m quite confident, that you guys will deliver an instant classic!
Looking forward to endless game time…

  140. Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

I am proud of being part of this huge fan community. Now, while Chris Roberts and their mates (a big THANK YOU for coming back to the space opera!) concentrate on the game development process, we the WINGMEN must start to save for buying that high-end PC :) Of course, DELL ALIENWARE & NVIDIA GPU. They have supported also Star Citizen, so I will support them as a customer! Now let’s cross fingers for a Star Citizen in Linux (I plan to use that OS in 2015!). For EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft and all those: simply read the screen, USD 6.2 million dollars, just for starting. Those are not going to you! :P

  141. Avatar of Lars Lars says:

A lot of us have said it, and I’ll repeat it: I am proud to be a suporter of Star Citizen and to be a part of this community! I’m only worried about how this will be reflected in my academic performance and financial situation a year from now… I flirted with the idea of spending about 100$ and ended up spending 700$ :P

  142. Avatar of Julian Julian says:

Congratulations on this huge success and thank you for your hard work!
I’m proud that I could contribute my humble part and I’m excited about what’s to come in the next two years! :-)

  143. Avatar of WKDK WKDK says:

Glad to be on here to, as old Commodore 64/Amiga gamer, that then switched to PC to later play Wing Commander, it was a great time.

Over the last decade, I find that to many game developers, only please the console machines, and have let the PC down, now Chris Roberts start the revelution to get the PC back in focus again.

Fact is that a Computer will allways be more powerfull, then a console machine.

Lets keep supporting, and spread the words about this game to friends/family, and let them spread it again so all in the world get to know this game.

+1 to all that have pledged, and I better start building a new pc next year for optimal performance ;)

See You in game in a year.

    P.S.
    Wife did join to.

  144. It is exiting to be part of this.

An idea to bring to the developers… how about added cargo room clipsed onto the sides of a ship at pylons if needing more room for cargo.

  145. Avatar of Bluntoze Bluntoze says:

I like everyone’s positive attitude on the site. Finally a nice like minded community that can stay civil while supporting individual ideas. Hope I never get to witness trolling around here and I am excited for the future.

Can’t wait for further development and more details.

Strap your self’s in ladies and gents, looks like it’s going to be a long and interesting journey.
