The Pledge – and Grace Period

After finally getting a good night’s sleep the team here at
Roberts Space Industries
would all like to
thank you for helping us make history.

It’s gratifying to see Star Citizen mentioned across the gaming and mainstream media; how its broken records, how it shows that people still believe in PC games, how they want to play a space sim, how it is another nail in the coffin of the traditional publisher model.

We hope that you will feel the same way. Even though a lot of press and commentators are praising our skill in running a campaign, the secret sauce that really made Star Citizen happen was YOUR dedication. Your belief in this game energized us as the days got long. Your desire to play kept us going as we faced technical issues and growing mountains of work to do. The community YOU built made sure WE stayed believers. You made this game your own; big publishers may someday look back at this as the beginning of the end, a day when the players took over the development process and made it their own. So from all of us at RSI: good work, Citizens!

The Pledge

You’ve spent the last month pledging for the Star Citizen project with your money, your time and your trust. Now it’s time for us to do the same.

We’ve created “The Pledge”, a founding document to let you know the standards to which we intend to keep ourselves to and how we will keep you informed and involved in the process over the next two years. You can access The Pledge here.

Grace Period

In the aftermath of some of the craziest 48 hours we’ve ever experienced it’s become clear that there’s a sizable number of people that were unable to pledge, or adjust their pledges due to the difficulties with the RSI site. Many people tried repeatedly over the weekend, only for the site to crash at various points during the check out. Some people switched to Kickstarter, but there were also a large number of people that Kickstarter wasn’t an option and so they have been left high and dry. The focus of our campaign was, from day one, involving the fans and trying to give them as many options to support us as possible. The last thing we want to do is punish any of you, and so we have decided to adapt our plans and offer a grace period for all current members of the RSI community.

If you have a membership, regardless of whether you have previously purchased a tier, you will be able to pledge at the current prices through this weekend. We will keep the limited add-on ships available through that time for everyone who tried to purchase one but wasn’t able. Everything will switch to the new pricing structure on Monday November 26th

Billing and Customer Service Issues

Over the last 72 hours almost 40,000 new members joined our community and combined with the RSI site going down, sometimes in the middle of someone’s transaction there are quite a few billing issues to resolve. We apologize for any inconveniences, and we just wanted to let you know that our customer support staff is working around the clock to resolve any issues. As there is such a high volume it will take at least a couple of days to work through the backlog of emails and intercom (our customer support software) messages.

If you have any issues you would like resolved which you have not previously notified us via [email protected] or [email protected] please email [email protected]. We’re dedicated to resolving any issues, so don’t worry, we will get to you and will do our best to fix any problem. We ask for you to please be patient. We’re a very small company, and while we’re staffing up to take care of our growing customer base, we only have two very overworked people dealing with fixing account issues – Cindy Armstrong, our CFO and Sandi Gardiner, our VP of Marketing.

Moving Forward

Look for updates from us in the very near future as we go about transitioning the site back to being focused on our community and telling the story of development.

For those of our backers in the USA we wish you a warm Thanksgiving holiday for later this week.

The biggest “Thank you” possible!

Chris Roberts and the RSI team.

  6. Avatar of Valkeries Valkeries says:

do the ground floor pledgers still get the grace period of a year afther this weekend and will the ships still come with lifetime insurance for the coming year?

    • Avatar of Reach Reach says:

I believe the lifetime insurance was only for people pledging during the campaign rather than after.

      • If you have already pledged and upgrade, I’m pretty sure you still get lifetime insurance. Not sure about additional ships.

        • Avatar of Loc-Deu Loc-Deu says:

But thats the question… Live time Insurance or Not….

          • Avatar of Shendue Shendue says:

I’ll quote directly from RSI (you can read the entire post in the ‘Comm-link’ section, ‘Thank You – Transition Plan’): “What about pledges? Good news: those of you who got in on the ground floor are covered. Your ships have lifetime insurance policies and for the next year you will have the ability to purchase further tiers or upgrade existing ones at the initial prices. That’s not true of everyone else: if you want to back Star Citizen and participate in this amazing community, you still can… but it’s going to cost you a little extra as of now, and you aren’t going to have as many extras (no lifetime insurance, for example.)”

          • Avatar of Thamril Thamril says:

I see my bank account get at least $250 lighter in the next year and a heavy bomber next to my other tidy ships.

          • Avatar of Toast Toast says:

Thamril: Is the Retaliator really still available after Nov. 26? Do you know? I think the Cutlass will be gone after Nov. 26…

          • Avatar of Thamril Thamril says:

@Toast Good point, I will ask customer service that. I have the appropriate funds but I already have misbehaved buying what I have and would rather wait a few months. The heavy bomber would really round out my hangar and let me jump into any role so I have to have it!

          • Avatar of Thamril Thamril says:

@Toast Wow looks like you were right! Good thing I bought my Retailiator. The other 4 ships are of no interest to me at all my wallet is now safe from the SC hordes.

      • Avatar of Shendue Shendue says:

Nope. It was clearly stated otherwise before. A previous message from RSI explicitly said that the initial funders of the campaign (and only them) will be able to upgrade and buy additional tiers at the same price as before for an year, with the lifetime insurance as well, while new, post-campaign pledgers will have to pay extra price for the same stuff and will have no lifetime insurance, which seems to me a fair way to both allow people that didn’t knew about the campaign to jump aboard yet rewarding the initial funders somehow.

    • Avatar of Julian Julian says:

I’m very interested in this as well! I think the recent updates where very unclear regarding the question, if there will be lifetime insurance for _all_ ships (regardless if added before or after the end of the crowdfunding campaing) of ground floor pledgers. The only point which is completely clear is that prices will stay the same, everything else… not so much.

  7. Thank You everyone at RSI – you guys really are an inspiration to all & we are damn proud to be your backers :)

  8. Avatar of Reach Reach says:

It’s amazing to see the total still going up quite quickly, $150,000 more than when the campaign officially stopped.

  9. Avatar of Moss Seer Moss Seer says:

Contacted Sandi @ customer sercice and expressed my disappointment at due to technical difficulties was unable to access site and pledge in the final hours before closure and pre-grace period announcement.
Delighted to hear that lifetime insurance was grandfathered for me and all future ships and so i bought a ship tier immediately.
You really put the big impersonal companies to shame with the quality of customer service shown so far. Keep it up!

    • Avatar of Solaris_Fowl Solaris_Fowl says:

small companies are great like that. It sucks that not everyone understood that we’re dealing with a small company here and 10s of thousands of people were trying to access the site simultaneously for like 48 hours, who effectively became 100s of thousands of people because most mashed the refresh button hoping to get access. It’s a good thing!
I would hope *cough cough RSI COUGH COUGH* they will learn that they will need to over-estimate their server capacities when it comes time to re-vamp the site and when they start bringing game servers online :) . I just stayed away from the site in the last two days (except when I doubled my initial pledge) to try and help out.

      • Avatar of Sirus Orion Sirus Orion says:

I would love for it never to happen again but in all honesty I don’t think that’s reasonable. Hate to bring up WoW here but even they repeatedly underestimate what will happen on release day.

        • Avatar of Malcoth Malcoth says:

I doubt they even underestimate really. But server capacity costs money, quite a bit of money actually. If you buy enough capacity to handle stressful events like launch days and stuff, I guess most of the rest of the time (i.e. almost all the time) your servers will sit there and do more or less nothing but eat power and bind capital you could use better somewhere else. So I’d gues sit would be just really bad business to let those spike events determine your server capacity. And at the end of the day, all gaming companies big and small need to work as businesses if they wan’t to stick around and make games.

          • Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

That’s quite understandable from a business point of view, but let me drop the ball somewhere else. The server farms contribute a lot to this mess and if unopposed, will continue to ruin release days/special events like this in the future.

If more of them would be inclined to offer reasonably priced, temporary capacity, they might start earning some extra cash while also achieving higher levels of customer satisfaction. It’s not just special events or release days when this is needed, but also every major software patch/upgrade.

    • Avatar of Jenn Menace Jenn Menace says:

Going to ask an obvious question for the sake of clarity and my sanity: If I buy a ship before this weekend, the insurance and garage is grandfathered in?

      • Avatar of Ronin Ronin says:

Yes, if you buy a ship before the 26th, you will -definitely- get lifetime insurance and no garage/berthing fees for all ships you have purchased prior to the 26th.

After the 26th, you will be able to continue to purchase the ships available for the same price as during the pledge funding. What some people keep questioning is whether or not ships purchased after the grace period ends, will also have lifetime insurance/berthing privileges or not.

I believe they do, as a reward to pledgers for having been a backer from the funding campaign, as they specifically mention that those people who weren’t from that initial group will be subject to the new prices AND won’t have lifetime insurance for their ships. But people are still wondering and would like clarification from RSI on this specific point.

To be fair to the devs, I really don’t think they think there’s any confusion or ambiguity on this matter, and that what they’ve said covers it all. It’s the uncertainty in our minds that’s the issue (for us) but because there’s “real money” involved, it’s a concern that will probably rear its head over again until there’s a definitive statement from the team at RSI about it.

BUT, yes, you are definitely covered if you buy before or during this upcoming weekend!

        • Ronin –

I think the uncertainty has to do with what some of us are seeing in the Pledge information in our accounts.

I purchased the Rear Admiral package. When I read the info directly, it specifically mentions “1 year ship insurance”. It does NOT mention Lifetime Insurance.

I’m sorry to say, yes there is “confusion and ambiguity”. If there’s a grace period on the lifetime insurance, it definitely isn’t showing up in the descriptions of the various packages at this point. They’re all listed with 6-months or 1-year terms on the insurance, including the package that is attached to my account as I mentioned.

I do hope are correct about the grandfathering. I PRAY you are correct!

Got chills reading this guys! I love you RSI and hope you guys get through the backlogs without too much grief :-)

This is going to be the most interesting game development I’ve ever tried to follow since I started PC gaming 18 years ago!

I still cant believe we hit 6 million! I stayed up until 3am to see the counter hit 4 million and it was great watching the livestream hit 6 million and the final seconds of the campaign.

    Good luck guys!

  11. Thank you so much. I really hate the way publishers treat developers and their games today. I truly hope this game shows them that they are no longer invincible, and serves as a potential example for other developers to follow.

I look forward to watching the progress of Star Citizen’s development!

Get some R&R while you can. All of you are probably in for a rollercoaster ride for the next two years, because the goals that were set, are goddamn steep.

Don’t get desperate, keep your hopes up, up until now you (and I mean everyone of you) did everything right. Just keep it up. :P

Gratz guys, It’s already amazing what you are doing. You already set a costumer service standard for the rest to follow.

Keep up the good work. and if you need new developers, i am available soon :)

  16. Thank you Chris. Thank you and your team for coming out of the woodwork to finally give us, the true space sim fans, what we have been yearning for since the “death” of Wing Commander, Freelancer, and Freespace. Thank you for giving us a unified goal to breathe new life into the Space Sim genre, a genre that would have, for all intents and purposes, remained “dead” notes and treatments sitting on corporate conglomerate shelves, never to be dusted off again, because the “potential” to bring in as much money as Call of Duty 23 or SOCOM 9 or whatever FPS military battle clone is coming out, just “isn’t there”. Thank you for putting your customers first, and above all, caring what we think. It is so rare now that any game company gives a shake about their customers, it’s all about the bottom line, who cares if the end product is a sub par re-hash of last year’s game? Thank you from the bottoms of all of our hearts. Thank you, Mr. Chris Roberts, for having the nerve to stand up in the face of overwhelming negativity, nay-sayers, and established multi-national corporate publishers and say “We don’t need you anymore!” We the people have spoken, and our words have been herd. In two years time, we WILL be back in space, where we all long to be.

    Long Live Star Citizen,
    Long Live Cloud Imperium, and
Long Live Chris Roberts, the father, innovator, and re-inventor of the modern space sim.

  17. Having to wait so long is going to suck, but only because of the promises of an epic game hovering on the horizon. We’ve waited all this time for a good space sim whats to more years in the face of that?

  18. Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

“The last thing we want to do is punish any of you”… First of all congratulations to everyone that made it happen. Particularly I worked hard to make people knowing about Star Citizen and Squadron 42 and I am pretty sure that I achieved a lot of additional pledges, besides those that I did myself. But, I was a little desapointed with the information or rumor that future mission packs similar to Squadron 42 and Behind Enemy Lines won’t be for free! That sounds weird, since all the time, Chris answered the question “How you guys are going to make money?” all the times explaining about people buying things to customize their ships and things like that, acquiring this using real money instead in-game credits. And NEVER told anything like “… And we are going to sell the future mission packs”, or disks or whatever word that you want to use. I started this post using the phrase: “The last thing we want to do is punish any of you”… So, please Chris and all people from Cloud Imperium Games. The single player campaign fans pledged in the same way of those who are more fans of multiplayer free world. So, DO NOT punish those people who believed by reading your documentation and having their questions answered without nobody talking anything about “missions packs with ticket price”, but instead, always been answered with “you are going to pay for the copy and you are gonna play forever with constant updates without additional payment”. Even that it was a mistake do not inform this properly for those who are interested in the campaigns part of the game, its even not fair that the multiplayer open world fans play everything for free forever, while the campaign single-player fans have to pay for their future updates! If is not possible and is part of your revenue plan, at least do not make people who was earlier backer and helped on this project to feel deceived, and at least, provide for those earlier backers, those mission packs for free, forever! Thank you all! And I hope that you do not thing that only multiplayer free word fans make you achieving the 6 million! The single-player/multiplayer cooperative fans of campaings deserves the same treatment and respect. Do this and do not disapoint us! My hope that putting that stretch goal “Behind Enemy Lines for Free (if the stretch goal was achieved) was actually a typo, and you guys actually had no intention to make the single-player fans having to pay to be happy with the game, while the multiplayer free world wont need to pay nothing to have their full experience with the first release and any future updates.

    • Avatar of Lechuck Lechuck says:

Hi Jean!was looking for you before in the live chat….maybe someone of the devs can give you a little word for making you no more disappointed.
      smile!!

    • Avatar of Pleasure Pleasure says:

Well Jean you can still play the game Singleplayer even without Mission Packs.. the Mission Packs are kinda an addition nothing to be a punishment.

it will be kinda like in Freelancer when you have completed the missions you go ahead into the free World and do little missions etc. from the Whiteboard. (At least i think it will be like that.) Mission Packs will kinda be like an extended campaign.. And as pledger you will get first one free. so Hell.. We get A LOT for what we have pledged.. don’t you think ?

      • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

When you say “We” you are talking of the fans of STar Citizen, and not talking of the fans of Squadron 42 (former fans of Wing Commander, more than Wc Privateer and Freelancer). People who are more fan of Wing Commander have a trend to prefer to follow histories and campaigns, not making missions or improving a ship. Of course, it ‘s cool, but not a preference for those kind of players. When I played Freelancer I played the missions around the universe for a while, but after the end of campaign, and only with this option, I bemae tired and didn’t play anymore, because I was more interested in playing histories than making my ship better, or improving my fight skill. So, I just think that there’s no reason to make the updates FOREVER free for multiplayers open world fans and not doing the same for those who prefer following histories of campaigns (which will be the mission packs like Behind Enemy Lines) – I didn’t any differnce between the Lancer package and the Colonel pkg (which was my pledge), so why my experience with the game needs to be reduced -if I did not buy future mission packs – while the Lancers are going to play for free for the enternity. It was the same price for the pledge, so, the full experiience of both types of games prefer, should be available for free in the updates too. I think that it was a mistake something like this not been clarified during the pledge campaign. It attracted a lot of people that was thinking that will have mission packs also for free Forever… So, I think that would be so more elegant to make what I sugested, making Mission Packs also wihtout ticket price for the earlier backers who didn’t have the proper clarification, at least. And put some information in the site clarifying later buyers of the game, that for them, since they were not earlier backers, they will have to pay for future mission packs single-player. Simply, is not fair with those people, that they have to pay to maintain their full experience with the game in the future, while the multiplayer open world fans do not to pay anything anymore.

        • Avatar of Adamanter Adamanter says:

You are talking about 2 completely different kind of content. The microupdates is the way developers will have to react to players actions and make the universe dynamic as promised. They may add some missions to the main campaign for free too (I read it somewhere) but in no way they will be a complete storyline. On the other hand, I’m sure Behind The Enemy Lines will be a whole new storyline, with acting voiceovers, and no less than 15-20 missions (well, we need more details but considering that the core campaign intially was going to have 30 missions less than half that number is hard to call it an expansion), an you want such material, FOR FREE?!
The only way CIG can release a campaign expansion for free is if they change the business model to monthly fee (of course removing the cash shop). Personally I don’t have problems with monthly fee model, but I understand most people doesn’t like it. Anyway, it is a pointless discussion because CIG won’t change the business model to monthly fee. So, they need another way to make money to keep the game interesting and alive. That way are the Expansions thus they can’t be free.

          • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Right! And as you prefer multi you dont have problems in playing only the multi and not buying the single new campaigns if you dont want to.
Weekly updates missions FOREVER, it’s very expensive too. Are you really sure that the constant updates weekly will be cheaper than builting new campaigns will all the engine ready – which definitely wont be so frequent? And you want all these new updates FOREVER for free? Sorry man, that doesn’t make sense! The multiplayer updates been FOREVER it will cost a lot more than non-frequent mission packs (even because they were going already have most of the job in terms of engine ready done). So, its simply unfair single-player campaing fans having to pay while multiplayer fans not.

        • Avatar of MeowGod MeowGod says:

Hi hi guys, I can understand your point of view regarding paying for extra mission but perhaps I could help with an easier perspective to ease the edges. First of all this game is big, real big n CI is a company that needs money to run and sustain. The online mmo version is free to play once you bought the game for as long as there are pple that take interest and would do micro transactions to ensure its survival. I’m sure there would be future temptations that lures players to part their money with :)

Ne ways, think of it this way, if the online version is depending on micro transaction to perhaps survive and pay for the online servers, how are they gonna get money to create the single player games? Single players stuffs will surely be highly detailed with voice acting, detailed storyline, places n etc and will take time n money to create. Single player add-ons is entirely another big monster the company has to deal with. It could probably be an entire different team that only create contents for single play. you are buying and supporting the story and creations of hardworking citizens. Also if mmo players wanna enjoy the extra stories they too have to pay for it. Do not think of it as a punishment nor a scam but a support and encouragement to the dev team so they could create more n more single player contents. Further more at least they have the intention of making mor single player stuffs after squadron 42 instead of full out online stuffs.

          • Avatar of Harb Harb says:

Well said and completely agree – it’s just going to be anohter form of dlc and i’m entirely happy with that and will pay to extend the SQ42 campaign and re enlist to do the extra missions as and when they become available

          • Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

If the addon was mandatory for all parties involved, be it Star Citizens or Squadron 42 players, then it would be fair for all. Squadron players wouldn’t feel like having to pay for Citizens and the latter would do their part in keeping this game up and running. A vote to settle this matter (if necessary) would be very appreciated.

          • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Yes! The difference here, is that the single players Fans will be REQUIRED to pay for mission packs in the future, while multiplayres wont be required. At the end of the day, single players are going to pay to the multiplayer fans be happy with all the possibilities for free in their side, while to have all possiblites in the single player side, you are required to pay. Even that I could understand that they need money, still, it wont clarified during the Pledge Campaign. Who pledged thinking in single-player, was thinking that will have updates forever for free too! So, those people deserves having the future packs for free! And let the future buyers pay not your account, multiplayer fans, but the account o fthe single player fans too, I mean, this way, it s fair for everyone who pledged, regardless their preference.

          • Avatar of Adamanter Adamanter says:

Man, you are missing one important thing that makes your whole argument fail. You are both single and multiplayer player. You can anjoy both the SC universe or Squadron 42. The same way “multiplayer” players. Everybody is in the same boat and everybody will have to pay for expansions. Microupdates will be free for you too. Is up to you if you want to enjoy the SC galaxy or not. Choose not to is no excues to ask for FREE content just because who does get’s free microupdates.
As early backers we already have a whole expansion for free. Ask for more is simply egoist and you are asking later players to pay your enjoyment. That is unfair.

I wont be really upset becouse I’m more focused to the persistent world… but can definetly see your point.
If I can play full campaign for “free” (I allready payd more than 100$ so free is way to say) I really will love to, but I wont pay any extra dollar on it.

i think chris has said, that the weekly/bi-weekly micro-updates will be free, but larger add-on are supposed to be sold.
i can’t remember where i read it though. the info is so spread around…

      • Avatar of Sesiom Sesiom says:

Yup lets just wait, now there is such many tons of information, and so many questions pending… they will need some time to pack all the info, an there is 2 years to take or change decisions.

        • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

Not all people have the oportunity to participate of all Chris conferences. What is said and needs to be considered is what is wroten in this website in the description of the game. And who read that, before pledging, thinking from the perspective that you want and prefer campaigns, much more than multiplayer free world experience, definitely you take the conclusion that new missions (which is not specified that is not mission packs with history) would be for free.
Ok. They need this for their revenue I heard here. Do that ok! But only for the future buyers, not for the earlier backers which thought and pledged thinking that will have their prefered preference available for free forever.

          • Avatar of gorg_graggel gorg_graggel says:

dude, don’t worry there will be free updates, just like the site says…
it’s just that larger add-ons won’t be free. and i think that’s fine, they have to be financed after all…

and just because you missed some info and not every little bit is easily traceable around the net does not mean we are entitled to press them to get everything for free. that’s just greedy. the site is a work in progress, just as the game is…
any info we might know today may change along the lines of development, when difficulties are encountered.

    • Avatar of Adamanter Adamanter says:

Though I can understand your feelings, are wrong and your logic is wrong.
Every game of this scope, AAA, that releases a major update (DLC, Expansion Pack, whatever) sells it because it is almost, by itself, a new game. When we talk of fee free MMOs (SC is a sort of MMO) like Guid Wars 2, in order to remain free they rely on Expansion Packs, that are huge, sells. The cash shops in these games are there to cover running costs mostly. It is unreasonable to ask CIG to release such kind of material for free.
I’m sure the price of any SC’s expansion pack will be reasonable and, of course, only 1 time pay. Buy it will help keep the game alive and will encourage developers to release future expansions of the campaign. Your experience of the main campaign won’t be diminished because of an expansion, it’ll remain exactly the same, however, if you want to play that expansion you’ll have to buy it. Vut, if your concern are the new ships that could be released with it, I’m sure they’ll be available in SC’s galaxy either you buy or not said expansion; so, besides extended storyline, there won’t be any extra benefit over core game players. In no way is a punishment sell expansion packs.
As I said, I understand your feelings but, as you can see, are wrong.

      • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

“however, if you want to play that expansion you’ll have to buy it.” And you? Are you going to be required to pay for the updates for the multiplayer stuff that you prefer? Well… Very smart from your side. I am going to pay for you, to make sure that Cloud can survive, so you really have your content for free FOREVER as they promissed. So, let’s the Colonel pay for all people living happy in the Star Citizen world. The Lancers deserves more. Colonels have to have this duty to pay! Really? Are you really think that’s fair? Fair would be having different prices for the packages. But we didnt have different prices. People who pledged in single player campaing experience, paid the same value. I didnt see a more cheaper pledge where you paid less since youre more interested in single player campaigns and at this case, you will have to pay for future upddates. Nothing like that. A lot of people doesnt know that companies needs this or that to survive, as you explained. They learn what is wroten in the merchandising. In this case, what was wroten in the Star Citizen description. And there was nothing, even in minor font size, saying that you would be required to pay for future mission packs of single player campaigns. Not even a word. And Chris and team helped to people think that really it would be for free, since always answered that additional content would be free, and not specifying anything about free only for the multiplayer part of the game. Even that it needs to be maintained to the universe survive, it was a wrong thing, and sound like they deceived people to achieve more pledges. But I don’t think so. It sounds to me like a mistake, due the rush and crazyness that was the Pledge campaign. But still, a failure from a service seemed promissed that are not be provided. So, lets the make the things right. Just provide the future campaigns ALWAYS FOR FREE FOR EARLIER BACKERS, because we were the people who didnt read anything about having to pay for future expansions, not the future buyers of the game. Then, put this information that is lacking for the future buyers, so that they know for sure what they are going to pay and what they wont be required. Why anyone would be against something like that? Do not use us for your own purpose to have your experience better and at a less cost! Lets make everything fair for ALL EARLIER BACKERS! If I have to pay for single player future campaigns, definitely the earlier backers should pay subscritpitions to play this game, the multiplayer part. As you told about the single player campaigns will have a reasonable price, ok, lets due subscriptions for a reasonable price then, so we could make sure the single-player campains for FREE for everyone! It’s more just for everyone! But I don’t like that. I prefer my first suggestion.

        • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

I don’t agree also that it needs to be voted. Of course that the majority of people who pledged prefer the multiplayer expereience of this game, and are going to be happy in letting those losers single-player fans to pay and making enough revenue so that they continue to have their full experience for free, forever. It was just a mistake. Lack of clear information which lead people to pledge thinking that they could have these mission packs for free. So, let all future mission packs for free for the earlier backers forever, put the information in the website that, for future buyers, mission packs wont be for free, and we all will have what we deserve, in a fair way for all, and not giving privileges for only a group of earlier backers and not all them.

          • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

First time that I alerted about this subject in the live chat, a lot of a fan boys came to practically kick me out (if they had this tool in the chat they certainly would make that), just because I was saying that was not fair. paying for missions packs and was not the promisse that they did in the description of the game. Som people started to say that I don’t know how to read, or saying that the things about free forever is in the context of Star Citizen, which is a different thing than single-player campaigns like Squadron 42 and due that, future missions packs (except Behine Enemy Lines) will have to be paid, and only missions, stuff for the persistent multiplayer online world where promissed for free.

Well, I knew for sure that I didn’t understand anything of the description of Star Citizen, in the wrong way, so I get back to the FAQ available for anyone (even non-backers) and I saw first:
1-)”Will there be story updates or expansions?
We’re going to be constantly updating the universe from our end. I’m not interested in having yearly updates. We will have a team of people adding content on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. So we’ll be always adding data, stories, and campaigns as well as reacting to what the players are doing.”

Great, until this point I know that there will be updates including histories and new campaigns. Let’s go to the next one:

2-) “Is Star Citizen an MMO?
No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander
            series…”

Ok. Only me notice that big exclamation in the “No”?I am sure that now that I told you all, you all can see clearly. There’s no such thing which fanboys said: “updates for free forever, are described in the context of Star Citizen which is a persisent world, while SQ42 and campaigns are another thing”. No! The definition of Star Citizen by Cloud Imperium Games is that it is the persistent world + Campaigns (like Squadron 42 and Behind Enemy Lines)

            And finally:

3-) “Is Star Citizen “free to play”? A subscription game?
To play Star Citizen you need only to buy the initial game. There will never be a monthly charge for usage. Some in-game items may be available as microtransactions, but we will NEVER sell anything that can’t be acquired through honest (and fun!) gameplay.”

Yes! I thought. Star Citizen which by definition is a persistent world PLUS offilne campaings, you only will need to buy the copy and then, all future content NEVER will be sold in a way that can’t be acquired through gameplay. And, as the previous answers told, we are going to have updates of stories, campaigns and so on!

See? Everything described in STar Citizen page is in context of offline campaigns or additional mission packs too. Because, Star Citizen is defined as both, and not only one of them.

Things clarified, I insist that if you guys should make this right, put some clarification ASAP, and for all backers which buy anything here, prior to this change in the description of Star Citizen, must be the warranty of having any future mission packs for free. For future buyers, the description changed will be there already, so that they will have certain that the price that they are paying do not includes future missoin packs (campaigns).

          • Avatar of Jean Tufao Jean Tufao says:

“and just because you missed some info and not every little bit is easily traceable around the net does not mean we are entitled to press them to get everything for free. that’s just greedy. the site is a work in progress, just as the game is…”

Just answering this… Right… I missed the info and it’s greedy. The site is a WIP. Ok. Let’s say then that things can change. Let’s put a subscription for everyone so the future single-player campaigns can be released for free then. It can be categorized as the same – a promissed not acomplished. From the point of view of a multiplayer fan, that’s not a problem the single-player campaigns fans having to be required to pay for their updates, but let’s do this, subscriptions for all multiplayer fans PAY for us, single-player campaign fans having their full content for free too! I am pretty sure that a lot of you guys wouldn’t like that… So why our single-player fans have to like that, since the description of SC didn’t tell anything about paying for future campaigns. Quite contrary, as already explained above, it includes everything inside “Star Citizen” and everything is described as free forever (for those who paid for the copy of the game)!

I will need the time to pay off my credit card and then using it again to buy a real good pc to play this at the max.

I am proud about being part of this fan community. No matter if I have to expend 2 or more years for Star Citizen to be finished and polished. In the meantime, I will play Discovery FREELANCER :) . RSI exemplifies true customer service in this industry in a way that was not possible years ago. Crowd funding has changed the game (no pun intended) considerably, and I hope this is the beginning of a new trend. Today you pay an average of $60 for a game you had no input on and no say in. I know I am willing (assuming I’m able) to contribute a bit more to a team I trust on a project for which I feel my voice is being heard and appreciated.

It was about time, Chris and all you guys and girls, we have been waiting for a WC/Freelancer/Privateer Game Online World, for damn too long already….just take a glance on, how many MMOs have been destroyed but a few, until you came along…
For since you give another Space Opera, the taste of which we have experienced from Chris Games so far, this will be a renaissance for the PC Gaming Industry in the making.
All your bad copies have failed, or never ever even tried to copycat your way of making games, suits and mediocre systems cannot match flesh and blood in acting and story coupled with technology and PC gaming.
I wonder how ignorant was the whole gaming establishment not to follow on Roberts footsteps, i guess the next generation will become a better audience and students of his school.
We, the forgotten gamers, who have experienced the level of Roberts Games, know…and thus we pledged without thinking over twice.
I don’t feel sorry for the suits, failing MMOs and rest of a dying breed of mediocre games…probably they never ever played Privateer through Clive Owen’s eyes, and were never ever the Heart of the Tiger through Mark Hammil, or Vigilant through Malcolm’s enticing figure.
What made the Spartans great, was the same thing like Roberts Games….flesh and blood and Spear…..which is People/actors/story and gaming together as One…Space Opera to see/play and live through.
This is why….i pledged! and Thank You!

Is there anywhere where we can get more info on the add-on ships? Its a bit hard to fork out so many $’s blind and years in advance of the product.

    • We’re going to do a brochure of each ship the way we did for the Constellation. It’s just going to take some time. Until then we’ve published the specs on all ships except the Vanduul fighter and the Idris Corvette.

If you’ve already backed, you’ll be able to upgrade or add on another ship to your account at the original prices for the next 12 months, so there’s no hurry if you want to wait to see pictures before upgrading.

      • Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

Chris, the Pirate Fighter has been an unexpected addition to the lot and I wanted to say big thanks for that. Personally speaking, I feel the concept of piracy can be taken to a whole different level and I would love to see this path opened up to everybody as early as possible and keep the door open pledgewise.

Imagine that you get attacked/captured by pirates and rather than biting the bullet, you are given the choice to join or die (after your cargo has been ‘cleared’). Or how about the option of going ‘rogue’ during the Squadron 42 campaign with a shiny new toy?

Piracy opens up a lot of possibilities to tell a story from another point of view or to branch out an existing story. Given the fact that piracy does not respect borders or races, it is possible to use it as a connection to all species (and the whole universe), whether they are at war or not.

Last but not least: dedicated pirate ships. I would really, really love to see some radical custom jobs on existing ships, even hybrids that may or may not be welded together from existing ones. This would do a lot to reflect the cultural variety of all species among the pirates. And also highlight their ability to make do or improve on whatever they can get their hands on.

By no means am I advertising piracy here, but I feel that the concept deserves attention and players should have an option to experience all facets of this growing universe. It’s a nice counter-point to the morally high seated concept of citizenship which for all I know is built on peace and stability. Out there on the borders, this is rarely the case and morals only get in between players and their continued survival.

First off, glad to see the pledge period extended – the extra money brought in can only ‘add’ to the game.
Insurance – what exactly is that?
When you are playing the single player missions, I assume that it is not applicable.
For Multiplayer, if you have either purchased a ‘better’ ship or upgraded it, what happens if you lose a fire fight? If you don’t have insurance, do you re-spawn somewhere with a basic ship?
Does insurance add in-game value to the ship that can be re-couped and put toward a better ship?
Is insurance something that cannot be bought after the pledge, when the game is released?
Is there a faq about it somewhere???
That would be nice to see sooner rather than later.

    • Avatar of Vhan Vhan says:

I believe Chris mentioned this before, & because it would bring more immersion into the game, & being a good money sink would help the economy in game.

I also believe it was mentioned that the “re-spawn” would be something that you eject from your ship & get picked up later, but it’s a work in progress.

Insurance doesn’t add value, just insures you your stuff. & insurance will be in the game after pledge (the pledge means you’ll never lose that ship [you may lose add-ons, or upgrades]).

& lastly if you are a pirate there’s no way you can get insurance I believe Chris mentioned.

  76. As I said before, I support you 110%, BUT no credit card means no financial “support”. And damn it, Mom and Dad refuse to help me out! I’m just a simple college student, with no job whatsoever. Sorry I can’t do more than get word out slightly more, and give you a nice well-earned fist pump in the air.

Are we going to be able to upgrade a Kickstarter pledge to a higher tier this weekend here at RSI, given the administrative lag after a Kickstarter campaign finishes?

    Cheers :)

    I squeak to this message!

  84. What a ride. Thank you Chris for envisioning this awesome universe and you and your team for running such an amazing Kickstarter.
I keep searching Kickstarter for a time machine project. No luck yet. 2 years is a long time!

  85. Avatar of Jason Leong Jason Leong says:

26th Nov just happens to be my birthday and I bought myself a few birthday presents here on RSI! Thank you and on to the development stage, of course after a well deserved rest for the team!

  86. First off, a major congratulations to what you have achieved. And secondly (and I apologise for rehashing a worn topic) because there still seems to be significant confusion as to the lifetime insurance issue, until told otherwise I am going to assume that if you had a membership before the pledge drive ended AND you had pledged before the pledge drive ended then adding another ship to your pledge will also include lifetime insurance and garaging for that ship (at least for the duration of the grace period). I really hope this is correct because I wanted to add the Hornet to my Constellation pledge but couldn’t get access in the dying hours to do so, so I added it just now during the grace period and the lack of lifetime insurance would be most upsetting.

    • Avatar of Vhan Vhan says:

Insurance in the game, I can grantee, wouldn’t be that bad. Something like this in the game is a functional money sink, & wouldn’t be a game breaker economically. If you plan on going pirate, then it could be a pain, but that is to be expected.

  87. Thank you guys for making a game that may challenge my beast of a laptop!!!!

  88. Avatar of Ronin Ronin says:

Well, it was a wild ride that’s for sure! I don’t think I’ve been involved (or felt so involved) with any game to that extent before, and I thank you for inviting us all to share with you the experience of the past several weeks, and most especially that last 48 hours!

I also want to give s special thanks to Sandi who was exceptionally helpful and responsive throughout, while answering my questions and allaying my concerns about some billing issues I had.

You may be a small team, but you’ve all got great heart and spirit, and I know the journey will be well worth the efforts of everyone involved.

I look forward to the future and eagerly await the many forthcoming episodes along our journey to become Star Citizens!

  89. Just plain awesome, I need a break from 8 years of eve and if Chris Roberts is behind it, I’d pledge up no matter what the project was, i’ve played the old Wing Commander back in the early days, was awesome :)

Thanks Chris Roberts for making my millenium :)

  90. Avatar of Nterl0k Nterl0k says:

Thank you and a huge one at that. I can’t wait to hop back in a proper space sim.

  91. Congratulations to the team. I was watching you all from Australia during the webcast. I played all of the Wing Commander and follow-on games as a kid. I’ve pledged as I believe you can create that same experience, if not better.
    Good Luck. Thanks.

Words can’t express how happy I am to see all the goals reached, to see the team interact with the community, and to see how dedicated everybody is to this. 95. Avatar of BluGeminii BluGeminii says:

First off, Commander Roberts and crew, we salute you!

I have been reading forums for more than a decade now and I just want to comment on the caliber of commentors on this site. Too often the people on gaming sites are just there to troll the other guys or to mention something negative, no matter what the subject matter is.

It shows that the level of person dedicated to true gaming (that’s US GUYS here, RSI included!), are made from the right stuff :-)

    • Avatar of Monzta Monzta says:

@BluGeminii: i totally agree to your words! This is exactly my thinking, and that’s why i love to stay here and read all the notes. Make this comunity to be an example for the world: stay on this level.

      so say we all

  96. Avatar of Cyrops Cyrops says:

Greetings RSI and all space lovers,
So many years ago I started up Freelancer, it was the first time I expierenced my jaw drop. Only so few games managed to achieve that since. I was hoping for, dreaming about Freelancer 2 alas to no avail. That dream was lost in time, until RSI came to be. I joined before 10/10/10 and my mind started playing tricks on me. I could see myself a few years in the future, sitting there like back in the days when I was a kid playing Freelancer: jaw to the floor, eyes teary and heart full of joy.
I believe in you sir Chris Roberts, I believe in you RSI.
    So say we all.

  97. Avatar of Calor Calor says:

Well they could make a poll what to do with the rest of the money (more ship costumization (furniture etc.))

    And now :
Thank you for the amazing pledge campaign.
PLEASE get some rest (cause it will be a rare luxury the next few years muhahahaha)

  98. Hello RSI Team,

    greetings from Hamburg.

    Very good work, go on.

  99. Avatar of Asaphe Asaphe says:

So happy this is happening! Good luck! you got a lot to do!

  100. To be honest, i think you would have alot more people picking up the $250 pledge if it carried over the 4 copies from the quad damage pledge.

Especially since you are effectively distributing a 4 crew ship along with it, it makes a lot more sense.

  101. Avatar of Rohanbad Rohanbad says:

Please just make the game already. This could all be just a big con.

  102. Avatar of Qix Qix says:

I’ve never been so excited about anything in my life! That’s why I put my hand deep into my pockets to give you guys as much as I could and I’m sure many others did the same as well. We have faith in you. Don’t let us down.

  106. Avatar of yoshikyoshik yoshikyoshik says:

    THANK YOU SO MUCH RSI!!!
You and we as the community just started something really great. Its so much more than only a game!
I’m so proud to be member of this community!
I’ve played Wing Commander I back than on Amiga 500 :) I loved the atmosphere, the feeling of the game universe. Later I lost the focus on gaming (of course I played several games on PC ;) . But now, everything is back. I feel like a kid, even if I’m already in my mid 30s ;)
So lets continue this wonderful beginning…
    Thank you again!

Be carefull with what you are going to translated in another site. I don’t think that for the next weeks, the content should be available for all people, since they are going to build a wall, we pledgers should respect that. That’s why I stopped to update with entries in some game communitites in my country as well stopped to update my blog. I only will update when I see that the inforamtion is not inside the wall. Maybe you already know that and is prepared to do that, but this alert is for anyone else.

RSI THANKYOU! you deserve every cent, Chris you have shown everyone that dreams come true, I’m proud to be part of an such an awesome event and this is something my sons have become part of as well.. goes to show that things like this can bridge a generation gap and more! Looking forward to seeing and being part of the development progress and remember You guys are the leaders in a new generation of gaming.. you deserve all the praise and more!

  110. Avatar of Mad Dog Mad Dog says:

Thank you Chris and the RSI team for making something I’ve been wishing for for a long, long time become a reality. I now have the the final reason to dump my X-box in the trash and get back to my first love, the pc! I am a disabled Viet Nam vet who spends a lot of time gaming and as such have been hugely disappointed with the garbage that passes as “quality” these days, the rubbish that the big publishers foist on us. You have been sorely missed! I have complete faith that you and your team will deliver the goods as promised and so I will now spend my considerable free time building the cockpit for my new Corvette, and the spanking new PC to support it. Now get some rest, and get to work! There is much to be done in the coming months.

  111. Avatar of Chili Chili says:

I am so happy for you at RSI and everyone in the community right now! This could not have gone much better, you have proven that there is a real appetite for the Space Simulator and that we do not need to use the traditional publisher model to make an excellent game for the next generation a reality! It is truly inspiring and it is what so many people have wanted for many years, I mean did you ever read the petition pleading for Freelancer 2 that thousands of people signed? http://www.petitiononline.com/FLPet/petition.html.
Well now it looks like our dream is coming true and I believe you can deliver it! Onward and upwards, thrusters to maximum!

  112. Avatar of Adamanter Adamanter says:

Your honesty, your autenticity, your bravery, Crhis, was what has inspired us. You made us believe this dream could become true.
There are times in history that it changes because the right person is in the right place at the right time. But many times nothing changes because that person is not bold enough to fight for his own dreams. Your greatness is to be brave and to be yourself and do what you felt was right. We just followed you.
I’m sure if you were not a passionate gamer as you are this project would never come this far, probably would never come true. You appealed to our passion for PC games and Space Sims, a passion you share. How could we say NO?
I’m sure together we’ll make an awesome game, and I’ve got the feeling few other games will have the soul this game already have, because it is your soul Chris, and we all saw it.
So, “be brave, be yourself, and all will be fine”

  113. Avatar of Zabojnik Zabojnik says:

Come on TEN MILLION DOLLARS! Well, maybe not, but it’s nice to see that pledges are still coming in! Congratulations to all of us!

  114. Avatar of Meeporized Meeporized says:

As sometimes stated above. Now the real work begins =)
But a big “Thank You” back because without your Ideas and Concepts we probably would not believe in you because this is what all who pledged do. Belive in you!

  115. Avatar of needto needto says:

I don’t see LAMP on the pledge photo, needs to be fixed! xD
Anyway, i am too amazed by what happened in the last few days, and seeing this amount of suuport for PC space sims makes me happy. Looking forward to the bright future of SC!

  116. Avatar of Malvan Malvan says:

    Go Star Citizen Go.

  117. Avatar of sol sol says:

this is sooooo awesome. i cant wait for star citizen to come out. i have never supported anything like this before. and have been waiting a long time for a game of this caliber. know one is more capable then you team chris!

  118. Avatar of MrMultimedia MrMultimedia says:

Well, that was awsome! I am still flattered by the momentum the whole campaign gained towards the deadline, tearing down those stretch goals faster than you could say “furball” to a Kilrathi. This really was something worth participating in :-D

Up to now, the space genre was practically dead. There was nothing new coming and so I had to stick to great fan projects like Privateer Gemini Gold or Wing Commander Saga, revisiting the playgrounds of my youth to get my dose of space awsomeness.

Hell Yeah, I normally don’t buy a pig in a poke, but everything you delivered so far feels just right. Although the logical part of my mind tells me to be carefull because much of what you did was some brilliant marketing. Yes, it was absolutely genius to release the brochure of the still untextured constellation to push the campaign and the short starport footage also helped a lot. But the gamer in me doesn’t care at all because all those tiny bits already breathe the spirit of a great space game. A game I am longing for since the brilliant Freespace 2.

Thank You Chris and Team for having the curage to revive a genre that was dormant far too long.

Thanks to all the people that, like me, supported this projekt with their money. I am looking forward to the next two years with this great community. This is OUR game!

  119. Avatar of joakhyn joakhyn says:

Actually i DEMMAND YOU TO BEGIN TO WORK XD (joking), i am soooo excited that every single day that passes i am eager to see all the progress!

Grats to Chris, the RSI- and the CR-Team for this good start.
Looking forward to all the (great) things to come…
And to meet you all in space :)

    • Avatar of Magnus Magnus says:

I totally agree with that. The times are changing, its in the air.
EA and the other mainstream publisher who only interested in the cheapest way to get more and more money get a slap in their face if other good developers get inspired by RSI.
It´s a great step into a new Era of game development.
Thank you Chris, thank you RSI Team.

  121. Avatar of Anaron Anaron says:

You’re welcome! And on behalf of every fan of Star Citizen, I’d like to thank you, Chris Roberts, and your dedicated team. You guys have given us a reason to believe in PC gaming again. It’s as if you reached into our minds and pulled out the game we’ve always dreamed of.

So far, so good. The community is full of interesting and respectful individuals. While most of us didn’t know what was going on, so many kind individuals did their best to spread the word. To spread knowledge to people that wanted it. I can’t wait to participate in discussions on the forum. And I look forward to playing the alpha and beta versions of Star Citizen.

Thanks, Chris Roberts… for inspiring us all.

  123. Avatar of Ladwin Ladwin says:

    @ Chris

Thank you very much TO YOU for this incredible project which realizes our wildest dreams.

However, I have a question : how will you do that “mod tools” don’t be “cheat tools” ?
Let me explain. I made a Freelancer mod where I revamped economy and exploration. But players quickly discovered trade routes, new bases, new wrecks not cause they flew with their ship, but because they used mod tools as FL explorer, FL Companion, FL hack …
I wouldn’t this to happen with Star Citizen. Will it be possible that coordinates of objects, commodity prices and other things can be read only by modders or administrators, and they can prevent mod tools to read these data, by crypting them or putting them only on the server side and not on client side ?

    • Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

That’s a good point you raise there.

The mod tools of other games practically invite blatant cheating, especially in single player campaigns and to some extent in multiplayer. Most of all when it comes to fixed locations for hidden items. The tools themselves also revealed vital information and game mechanics that could be mercilessly exploited and abused. In essence, mod tools are largely sanctioned cheats these days.

I dearly hope that Star Citizen’s mod tools will set the record straight and restore their intended purpose, namely modifying and creating content.

    • Avatar of Adila Adila says:

simply keep the relevant files on server rither than client? making client read from the server in order to get the data. technology is going forward :P

    • Avatar of Seor Seor says:

      @ Chris

I agree with Ladwin. These facts of “cheating” made us very disappointed. Ladwin was working herd alone to create something great and some “bastards” made the choice to use these softwares to know everything without afforts.

    • Avatar of Elda Elda says:

      From Kickstarter homepage

      Persistent Universe (hosted by US)
      Mod-able multiplayer (hosted by YOU)

I think the Persistent Universe (the online galaxy) may have different data vs
the Mod-able multiplayer which should act like private game.
So the cheating should not be a problem as you host your own private game, you are the one who decide to cheat or not while ultimately it have nothing to do with the MMO Persistent Universe.

      • Avatar of Pellksar Pellksar says:

That’s not the point, the point is : “If i mod this and this on my server (for example, adding a high end vessel in a high end system), will people be able to rush it in 5 minutes, instead of farming 20 days, thanks to the mod tools ?”. If this opportunity is given (not deliberately, of course) to the people playing on your private server, it’s something like cheating and that’s a pain in the ass.

    • Avatar of Pellksar Pellksar says:

I’ll add my voice to this one ! The mod tools should interact with something on the modder’s computer or server side, with a restricted connection or something ?

  124. From Spain, also support this great idea. Thx for remember us that sims still alive.

      • Avatar of Dayln Grimm Dayln Grimm says:

Same here, loved the old Wing Commander games, really loved Privateer!

My only problem with the games were that they were too closed, not expansive enough, so far, everything I read about this is a positive.

I have always wanted to play a first rate space game, with multiplayer aspects and particularly ships with more than one person on them.

If this game is open ended enough, it could very well be the game I always wanted to play.

  131. Avatar of corimo corimo says:

  134. Avatar of no idea no idea says:

Just something I want to note:

As a matter of fact this is not the first game on which a community has such a high impact: Natural Selection2 with the VERY small developerstudio: Unknown Worlds Entertainment did this the past ~8 Years!
The community was/is is embbeded into the development in a way, that even a few community members are now working full-time for UWE.

I was looking at the ships here, and on the Retaliator (and on the kickstarter update) there are 12 level 3 hardpoints and 5 level 4 hardpoints. Mounted on these are 8 missiles on the 12 level 3 hardpoints and 8 turrets jammed into the 5 turret slots. One of these numbers is wrong. I would guess there should be only 5 turrets, as the ship holds 6 people (1 per turret + the pilot).

Also, still waiting for the Scythe’s stats. For the price, it had best be severely OP, lol.

thanks a lot, and can’t wait to play the game in a year or 2, been waiting for this game since i finished Freelancer.

  145. First of all, congrats you guys! Thank you for making my dream game :)

I’m still a little confused regarding lifetime insurance and pledges. If someone could help clear this up it would be much appreciated.

I know that all early backers will be able to upgrade their existing tier for a year and recieve lifetime insurance. The confusion for me is for ships that you buy IN ADDITION to the ships in the tiers.

For instance, I really want to get the retailator but I’m not sure if I have the funds at the moment. If I wait until after this weekend to purchase the retaliator, will it have litetime insurance/no garage or berthing fees? Or does this perk only apply to the existing or upgrading ships beloning to the pledge tiers. Basically I’m wondering if that perk will extend to individual ships bought in addition to the tier packages or if it only applies to ships bought or upgraded through the different tier packages?

Thanks for help clearing this up and thanks again for making this awesome game!
