UEE Marine Concept Art

Greetings Citizens,
Today we’re pleased to show you the very first concept images of a UEE Marine from artist Rob McKinnon! Chris Roberts showed these images–and some others, which will be revealed in the coming days–over the weekend at his SXSW panel. Check back later in the week to find out more about Chris’ panels!

wow… looking good guys!

Definite Vin Diesel vibe here. :)

3. I cant pick which helmet I prefer!

4. To be honest i liked the original concepts better.

“I’ll be back!”

My favorite Helmet designs are number 1 and 4.

6. Avatar of Firefox14x Firefox14x says:

Looks awesome! Wonder if the marines would get personal shield generators? But just love all the different variations of helmets. Would be great to customize every aspect to allow to really have a unique look to your armor. Not everyone running around in top tier armor looking all the same

• Avatar of Brokinarrow Brokinarrow says:

More than likely though, Marines will be NPCs and not a player character job. In that regard, Marines wear uniforms and wear the same armor for a reason: they’re a military force :)

One suggestion I would add in: make sure the combat uniform makes physical sense. Try mocking up an actual uniform and run around in it, maybe play a game of paintball or something. Make sure the components make sense. While uniform A might look cool, you might find that it’s totally impractical because stuff get’s in the way, or bounces around too much etc.

I know this is a Space Sim, but as a Marine myself, I always love to see attention to detail given to the fictional Marines :D And, as this game is clearly striving to be as immersive as possible, it makes sense to me to go the extra mile on this type of thing.

7. Avatar of Brokinarrow Brokinarrow says:

Very nice, but remember, the most important piece of equipment to a Marine is his/her RIFLE! Some extra love and attention to detail would be warranted there ;)

8. I love helmet 4 because of how slim it looks, but number 3 is a close second. Cant say i really like number 1 or 2 though. The FOV on 1 seems small, and 2 looks kinda odd. 2 does look like it has some blast shielding that drops over the eyes though.

9. Avatar of Hotspur Hotspur says:

Not a real complaint as this is concept work, but I hope ranks in the UEE, both commissioned and non-commissioned will have their own insignia that are different from current day chevrons and bars etc.

I’d love to see the detail in little things like a well thought out rank structure in the UEE and even if it mirrors modern day in many ways the symbols could at least be different so it’s not overly drawn from one nation or the other.

• Avatar of Mule Mule says:

Chevrons have been in use for about 200 years as far as I know for military rank, I don’t imagine why in another few hundred they would change that system much. I think creating a system that is completely different for no apparent reason can damage the verisimilitude.

Considering Chris’ most famous games are literally named after an RAF rank (Wing Commander) I’d say there’s a precedent established to have marines called by the same ranks we are used to already!

• Avatar of Hotspur Hotspur says:

I’m fine with the ranks being the same names, that can ground things.

What bothers me here is that the chevrons are pointed up, which is an American thing (more countries as well but I don’t know them. Canada, the UK and the Commonwealth face theirs down. So to my eye these chevrons look just plain wrong.

Instead of saying ‘make your chevrons face the way of my modern day nation’, I thought a more universal approach would be to devise different rank insignia even if everyone is still salled Sergeant, Lieutenant, Colonel.

A good example where this was done well was in the new Battlestar series where their ‘collar dogs’ were their rank symbols and very recognizable despite being totally different from our current system. They used the same ranks as we do now, they just had different symbols.

It makes sense to me to have new insignia when Earth became a planet wide and later galaxy spanning government and military. Just food for thought, I’d rather everyone get something new than stay rooted to rank insignia particular to a single nation state.

• Avatar of Mule Mule says:

I get what you are saying there, as they are US facing echelons. Personally I’d be happy to see them done the brit way if only because of the Wing Commander reference :)

What I wouldn’t like is something out of left field that we will feel a need to learn to immerse ourselves…

• Avatar of Tim Tim says:

To be honest, I’ll be too busy trying to shoot them before being able to see what chevrons they have!

Would be funny if the game allowed you to steal uniforms as well as ships 8-)

“Hang on, you’re not the General!”

10. Avatar of Mule Mule says:

Just the right blend of realistic/fantastic to make for good sci-fi I think! Great work on this art, though his 1911/2011 looks a bit like a target pistol rather than a combat sidearm!

I love the helmets with the wider fields of view, definitely a bonus. If you have ever had to do anything requiring situational awareness in a crap gas mask before you’ll know what I mean!

11. Avatar of Loz Loz says:

The first and second helmets reduce peripheral vision. Third and fourth look more logical.

12. Avatar of Ferco Ferco says:

The number 4 “Reese” reminds me of something Tali would wear :)

13. Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

Excellent show, Rob. I’m really digging your style =)

14. Avatar of Karab Karab says:

#3 and #4 looks pretty nice, #1 is a distant 3rd in part due to FoV apparently being too small IMO (despite HUDs).

15. Avatar of Moffo Moffo says:

Very fine Artwork.
Will we see this level of detail in the final graphics?

16. Avatar of Spark Vizla Spark Vizla says:

Hey guys!

Man, I dont want to be that user but…well, imma be that user. Marine is an operator at LAND and SEA. Unless there’s going to be ground combat on the surfaces (ill help mod that in, thank me later ;) , then consider changing the term marine to something less (relatively) archaic of the time.

Just my thoughts. No less, well done.

• Avatar of Mule Mule says:

Spark,

These type of space opera games traditionally make heavy use of the “Space is an ocean” series of tropes which is why we stretch the definition of space ship to “Ships” like in an ocean-bourne navy. That is why the Bengal carrier is a “UEE Navy” ship even though in our present reality space is the domain of the air force and scientific outfits of the world.

Because these ships are “Navy” ships in this type of universe, the fighting men aboard are “Marines” as in soldiers that fight from naval ships. Sure it stretches the definition. The name marine refers directly to the ocean, etc… But it’s a lot more interesting than calling them “Security Forces” or something else generic!

17. Avatar of Mathias Mathias says:

Even if there is no game at the end of these 2 years, I will (almost) be happy at just looking the fantastic art created. Kidding! I need the game! Awesome concepts!

18. Avatar of Sentinel Sentinel says:

Saw #4, and thought, “I miss Tali.”

19. Avatar of Donniels Donniels says:

I prefer helmet no. 4, but i think the marines would prefer a bigger field of view. though it could be completely closed of, and the marine could look through VR googles on the inside with cameras all around the helmet.
Also though the marine looks kewl, it seems like a military force that would like to win hearts and minds also and i dont get that from the picture.

• Avatar of Ocean Ocean says:

Keep in mind it’s a re-imagining of the roman empire. They had a more realistic view of things I think. Try not to get today’s politics confused with a real military force. That “feel good” type of stuff you’re talking about is only helpful if the civilians are in charge or if you’re an occupying force. If there’s a choice to be made in form vs function, well any military worth it’s salt would choose function every time on mission critical equipment.

• Avatar of Delta68 Delta68 says:

“it seems like a military force that would like to win hearts and minds also and i dont get that from the picture.”

Your thinking the Army…

• Avatar of Hotspur Hotspur says:

Winning hearts and minds to this fella means to bullets to the heart and one to the brain of whoever gets in his way.

20. Avatar of Ocean Ocean says:

The last two helmets have that old cobra commander feel to it. Might look a little better (and meaner) if you reduced the height of the window while keeping the width. Or, keeping in mind that this is the future, some sort of lens in the helmet that allows for a normal viewing angle with minimal window space. #3′s art direction looks the best out of all of them though, aside from the huge full face window.

• Avatar of Brokinarrow Brokinarrow says:

I’ll have to disagree there. The less constricting the visor is on your field of vision the better. Even in the future, technology can be broken, fail, or be sabotaged. A good Marine needs to be able to continue to fight no matter what the situation, and having a smaller visor would seriously hinder anyone’s fighting capability if the tech gadgets break.

21. Avatar of deadbody deadbody says:

Wow, that looks mean! Excellent! I like all four Helmets, please include them all :D

• Avatar of Brokinarrow Brokinarrow says:

^ Seconded, all four could definitely have their place in the game. #1 would make a good EOD helmet, 2 could be a technician or something, 3 strikes me as a standard infantry helmet (best field of view), 4 could be for pilots perhaps?

22. They all look great.

3 and 4 are kind of generic. 1 and 2 I’m not sure what I’m looking at, side shot please?

23. Avatar of Kill3rCat Kill3rCat says:

Imo, 3 is my favourite. 4 is the runner-up. The others look a tad bit android/cyborg/robot kind of thing. Liking the Marine though. Nice work.

24. I like 1 and 3 but whatever concept seems most practical

25. Avatar of Boraxx Boraxx says:

I love the helmet designs.

What I would love to see with the helmets is that I can change my visor.
Just like regular pilots can.
It not only changes my look, maybe I wanna walk around the deck without being recognized, so I use an almost black visor, or I have a visor meant to give me better visuals in extreme light condition, ie around a star.

• +1 I would love #3 in all black with a black/dark tinted visor. Or one that has no “window” but goggles and/or several camera’s to change viewing from normal/night vision/thermal/movement detection/radar/etc. Really go for a cyborg type look, especially if you loose an eye and get a cyborg eye… that would ROCK!!!

• Avatar of Boraxx Boraxx says:

Btw I love all 4 designs no one over another one.
The way I see it, different helms can be worn by different squadrons, to set themselves apart. It would just be another way for people to pimp their avatar pilot.

26. Anything extra for subscripters, please?
have not seen any updates since Jum Point issue #2

27. Avatar of petpull petpull says:

i think #3 is the best;
remember that a marine needs to see what is going on; Therefor i think it is most important, that the marine has a wide range of view

28. Avatar of Killer Killer says:

I want to be one of these guys in the game!

Please let me. I’m in awe looking at this concept art.

29. Avatar of Sagron Sagron says:

I think I’d almost rather see a helmet along the lines of http://media.archonia.com/images/samples/68/84/106884_s2.jpg

(from the To which is pretty crappy, but has some decent cgi)
Gives extremely wide fov and has pixelled overlay on the glass for hud/targeting overlays.

30. I would NOT be pleased to see a fire team of these guys boarding my Constellation. Are the helmets different candidate designs or are we looking at operational variants (deep-space, hazmat, fireproof)?

Continuing the “Roman” theme of SC… one of the greatest strengths of the Roman Empire was the engineering skill of its legionaries. They could march on long patrol through the badlands of Germany for a year, leaving behind a network of roads, bridges, and forts as they pushed back the border of the Empire. They were well-disciplined, battle-hardened troops but their genius was in their ability to build, manage their own logistics, and operate in hostile territory for long periods of time. I’d love to see that ethos in some of the UEE designs.

31. Avatar of Mosern Mosern says:

Looking great, however…

I’m pretty sure the hand-held weapons 900 years in the future will be way different than we have today.

My guess for weapons in the future:

a. Weapons would have perfect aim. If you can see/sense your enemy, it will be dead.
b. The damage done by the weapon could be immediatly changed from stun to nuclear explotion. Depending on the need of the operator.
c. Only robots would be used in deadly combat.

However, this ain’t fun – so bring in the UEE solidiers instead.

32. Avatar of z3d z3d says:

3 is my favourite but it’d like to see side views as I could really like 1 as long as the side profile isn’t egg shaped but more sharpish, if that makes sense?

Great update again :)

33. Avatar of Killer Killer says:

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. @ Cloud Imperium

34. Avatar of UltimateEel UltimateEel says:

Liking that Number 3 helmet…
Good work!

35. Avatar of Chromasphere Chromasphere says:

I like 1 and 4 BUT:

There needs to be a thin strip at eye-level that goes further back along the sides for maximum periferal views. This is combat… you need fast periferal glances but also maximum protection. #1 would do that (and it would do it badass) IF it included a not-too-wide horizontal strip at eye-level that ran back along the helmet for maximum periferal perception.

36. Avatar of TheMatrix78 TheMatrix78 says:

Omg, that looks so nice, i cant wait to put on my uniform and helmet, exit my ship and shoot some stuff. ;D

37. Avatar of Hermit Hermit says:

Call them “Space Marines”

You know you want to. Don’t be afraid. You can do that without worrying about a C&D from Games Workshop, because they don’t own a generic sci-fi term which has been around since the 1930s. The dispute over the MCA Hogarth novel finally put Games Workshop in their place :)

So they’re UEE Space Marines!

38. Avatar of TuskenRaider TuskenRaider says:

The lips are wayyyy too big.

39. Holy shit, he looks poster child bad-ass! That’s who you have in the commercial to join the military. LOL.

40. Avatar of BaalorsBane BaalorsBane says:

Love the marine and helmets 3 and 4. Very good concept art!

41. Avatar of Terra Terra says:

I like 3 the most (2 is also good)

42. Avatar of x ZeroG x x ZeroG x says:

Looks good – I prefer 3 & 4.

43. Avatar of Milorgmannen Milorgmannen says:

Nr1 is the best, in the future, FOV have no meaning, camera/s inside, and full protection.

44. Avatar of Jake Jake says:

3 is just a bit too Halo for my tastes. 2 looks like something you’d actually see a pilot fly in.

45. Avatar of Robbels Robbels says:

Wauwwww I just love 3 and 4.
The other seem to have bad horizontal view.

Number 3 I would love to have as real motorcycle helmet!!
Put in blue tooth headset and I would cruise around in it all day long!!!!!
Great work Rob

46. Avatar of Starus Starus says:

Marines kick ass! My favourites are helmets 3 and 4.

47. Avatar of Gavatron Gavatron says:

I like it, but I think there’s too much detail. Should have a more streamlined design that looks more ‘cost-effective’…also all the bits and edges sticking out look like they could be a liability…

48. Avatar of bombspy bombspy says:

Looks really great, make it believable that you can survive in those suits in vacuum and other extrem conditions.

49. Avatar of Maus Maus says:

Number 3 looks awesome!!!

50. Avatar of Neo Neo says:

Helmet 4 in my opinion…and I hope that pistol’s LCD is double-sided, otherwise he’ll have problems twisting his hand to see it :)

51. Avatar of Stephenoh33 Stephenoh33 says:

3 and 4 make more sense as you need a helmet with wide viewing angle for dogfight.

52. Avatar of KappaTau KappaTau says:

I like them all.

I’m looking at No.1 in particular and assuming in my mind that the pieces that obstruct the FoV are filled with sensors/electronics that feed directly into the marine.

Perhaps this helmet can be radar based for extreme dark environs? That seems pretty cool to me as a concept.

53. Avatar of Docsolid Docsolid says:

2 or 4. But they all look great, as does the Marine.

54. Avatar of Rider Rider says:

I’m really digging helmet #1 and #4 – gives you that “jet pilot from the future” feel.

Not feeling hot or cold on the marine bodyshot though. Seems a bit too much standard sci-fi fare. There’s not really anything that stands out from him, aside from maybe the logo on the suit, but that’s small stuff.

55. Avatar of Blackeye Blackeye says:

Really good work !! i think i should by a new pc my GTX 285 wouldnt handel this graphics XD

56. Avatar of crazygnu crazygnu says:

Cool stuff, I would prefer Helmet #3 or #4.

57. Avatar of Mystifur Mystifur says:

Helmetwise: 3 & 4 look good

Uniform: Given that this also doubles as combat suit, I would put segmented plating over the air supply hoses.

58. Avatar of Warhawk32 Warhawk32 says:

Epic game that is truly EPIC(!!!)

59. Avatar of Luciant Luciant says:

3 & 4 are terrible imo, they look far to similar to master chief’s. 1 is ok, but like another poster said I prefer the concepts that are in the vault, in particular the very first concept named UEE_PILOT_SKETCH_001_RM.

60. Avatar of Panthern Panthern says:

Man I love the response that is given to the things that come out I can’t wait to have a lot of you on my wing in some really good dog fights

That being said I love the look of the Marine I like helmet 1 and 4 one just looks sick I just want one and 4 looks practical like something that would be military issued.

61. Avatar of Eidolonius Eidolonius says:

3 and 4

1 is too alien given the small size of the visor would cut off any peripheral vision. That could be a coding advantage, however, if you’re trying to increase speed by limiting pixels you can see.

2 might be easier to judge if there was a head in it. The three vertical bars are probably the back of the helmet and not something on the visor. I still find it a little to oval.

62. Avatar of Reach Reach says:

Love helmet 4 and the character looks amazing.

63. Avatar of dav75 dav75 says:

I do like Helmet 3 and 4 and the full body is great but I wouldn’t mind seeing different colours/patterns if possible on the full body.

64. Avatar of Valdo Valdo says:

For the helmets 3 & 4 are my favorites, 1 & 2 look nice but don’t feel very practical for humans in combat. The vision would be way too small.

As for the rest of the armor, I like the vibe. But it doesn’t look very practical to put on and run around with. A soldier has to be able to deploy very fast. There are also a lot of tubes going around his chest, don’t know if it makes looking around and shooting pretty easy.

65. Avatar of Rioku Rioku says:

3 is my choice

Greetings

66. Avatar of rattpunk rattpunk says:

I really dig both the full body and helmet concepts. Especially how the different helmets all seem to have functions that make them stand apart. 3 almost looks security/cop with the fullest FOV – 4 has a fighter pilot look with a narrower FOV – 1 looks like an augmented reality Spec OPs deal – 2 I’m not sure about but looks real spacey :)

Pretty slick pistol too,
Nice work guys.

67. Avatar of Everdark Everdark says:

1 looks like pilot, 2 looks like black ops, 3 looks like marine, 4 looks like infantry

they all look awesome imo

68. lot of talk on the helmets, and a lot more about the field of view, or lack of on helmet 1 and 2. I wonder if 1 and 2 don’t have a heads up display in them, maybe a projection on the inside, with the small window more for in the case of failure? I didn’t really like the bubble look in the original concepts I saw, I personally prefer 3, but 1 and 2 could be very interesting if they had an in-helmet display.

69. Avatar of Wormser Wormser says:

Like the looks. Don’t digg the lettering on the shades. Bad if the target sees such an all.

70. Avatar of Blackbird Blackbird says:

OK, who was talking about field of view issues?! …

71. Avatar of Baragoon Baragoon says:

That’s some mean looking polygons right there…

Does the UEE have a thing against hair?

72. Avatar of Quorum Of 4 Quorum Of 4 says:

I say go with helmet 3 or 4. Or you know go crazy and put them all in!

73. Avatar of Warlord Oden Warlord Oden says:

Damn saucy stuff, right here. :D

74. Avatar of V3XED V3XED says:

My eyes cant stop orgasming. The concept might be a little cliche, but im totally ok with that, and the concept art is incredible! As an aspiring concept artist I am thoroughly impressed

75. Looking awesome. Helmet number four looks really slick. Also, that pistol looks an awful lot like a gas pistol I have…

76. Lovin helmet number 4, with number 2 as a close second. Its great to see the amount of detail going into these early designs.

77. Avatar of elandys elandys says:

I can see a use for all the helmets.

1 is black ops – no insignia
2 is other faction
3 is special forces, goes well with the dark marine outfit, for instance
4 is regular army or land based navy pilots

78. Oh man that is badass!
I’m currently reading the Hyperion novels and this is EXACTLY how I pictured Colonel Kassad!! :D

79. Avatar of Xpo3 Xpo3 says:

Love the Helmets, Love the outfit, hate the guns.

80. Avatar of Aeroflux Aeroflux says:

Diggin Helmet #3…the displays on the guns are bit…2D in the sketch compared to the rest. Neat concept but the ammo count will just go to the personal HUD…

81. Avatar of Gears Gears says:

The suit is fantastic. The helmets — are showing good directions, but none of them quite scratch my particular itch, yet.

I like the clean look of #’s 3 & 4, but dislike the full face visors. Just like with the pilots’ helmets, I’d rather there be some sense of armoring rather than just MOAR GLASS 4 BETTAR FOV!!!!

More importantly, and more uniquely an issue for the UEE Marines vs. the pilots, I love the sense that #’s 1 & 2 give of dehumanizing the wearer. When you don’t have a full face visor, you’re obscuring their face and head and making them less recognizably human and, therefore, much more menacing and intimidating. I’m not too keen on the very round, insectoid look #1 has, though, and I’m not entirely sure what I’m looking at for #2.

Ideally, if I were consulted on the design, I’d ask the artist to take the clean lines and tighter silhouette of #4 and combine it with the tighter (shorter, certainly, if not necessarily narrower) and less open shape of #1′s visor to give me a fearsome looking helmet that obscures the wearer’s features.

82. OUTSTANDING! I love the look. I wouldn’t change a thing. Those helmets are fantastic.

83. Oops. I should add, I especially like helmets 1, 3 and 4 (3 is probably my favorite but so hard to choose!)

84. Avatar of Smileyface97 Smileyface97 says:

Very nice looking.
But I’m wondering; the glasses have displays on them right? So does this mean that there won’t be retinal displays? But who’s to say that you can’t have both right!

85. Avatar of PopRocks PopRocks says:

That number 3 has got to be the sexiest work of art I’ve seen for a helmet. Wish I had one in real life just to stare at all day.

86. Avatar of Ron M.Durus Ron M.Durus says:

3 and 4 seem like helmets you would see in a syfy video game like halo, 1 and 2 seem more realistic helmets that you can image a real pilot wearing. Honestly I’m torn between 1 and 2, but don’t get me wrong. I think all 4 are amazing and could find their place in this massive game.

87. very nice – I’m liking #1

88. Avatar of Greaser Greaser says:

Can we switch of the lighted elements? I don’t want to be a living target :-)

• Avatar of Alchemi Alchemi says:

Bingo! I’ve never been in a situation where my life was endangered because I had a flashy thing on me, but I’m fairly certain you don’t want a beacon on you during combat maneuvers. Having to light up your weapon to check the status seems counter-intuitive. If the handheld weapons have readouts / monitoring, they should be as inconspicuous as possible. (Display on the “outside” of the weapon seems to be a lousy idea unless there’s some really awesome buddy system for your squad mates to read your weapon’s display and let you know what it says. – or maybe that’s the ambi model)

:) And not to bash the mockup, but where is his index finger at? I can see the trigger, but….. (Hey, it’s alpha stuff, that’s cool :) )

Looking forward to more.

89. Wow, fantastic concepts! I really love those helmets. If I had to pick one of them though it would probably be #1 because it seems the most unique and will probably be more iconic since it is so different from the usual pilot helmet look.

Also the body suit looks bad@ss as well and oh my, dat pistol… f^ckin rocks! I want. NOW!

90. Avatar of Expiry Expiry says:

Why is his finger on the trigger of his pistol? That is a poorly trained space marine!

91. Avatar of Eera Eera says:

really love the skin.

now, with the kind of detail, i can’t imagine that the FPS content will be minor in Star Citizen.

92. Avatar of Mr Fuzzikens Mr Fuzzikens says:

That’s amazingly pretty art :D

I love it guys, keep up the good work!

93. Avatar of Exsecror Exsecror says:

Looking Good! The gear makes him look badass :)

94. Avatar of bmbfd bmbfd says:

I love to see the detail, but how will this scale in the greater picture when all the action is going full belt? How many FPS are we expecting to run at? Can the Cry engine cope with all this detail? I hope it can.

95. Avatar of TeXMeXN TeXMeXN says:

I must say that helmet number 3 looks like the most sound choice, viewed from a tactical and practical perspective. From earlier experience as a CQB soldier the field of view with number 1 and 2 is too damned small. Still, they look cool as hell guys!

96. Avatar of bmbfd bmbfd says:

Still, it is only concept art, it’s not “wysiwyg”

97. Avatar of Sozoshin Sozoshin says:

Badass Marine …
love the helmets

98. Avatar of ugore ugore says:

OMG…man that guy is a SHEPARD BADA$$ looking Mother…GJ CR and crew

99. Avatar of Borcula Borcula says:

Seeing the guns and the information on that.. does that mean that ammo information etc. wil appear on the guns?

I would like that WAY more then a HUD.

Do wonder if putting it on the side is the right placement. but then again.. its just concept art.

100. Avatar of BaronDeKalb BaronDeKalb says:

Coolest looking Marine of all time EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as helmets, I’m liking 4, but with a blue visor, like 3.

the helmets are very cool!!! Nice Scetch up

That pistol in the concept art looks a bit like an airsoft gun/race gun irl.
Specificly the WE Dragon.

104. Avatar of Xaris Xaris says:

I like 1 and 2 best because 1) they look the most intimidating/alien to me. 2) I would expect a futuristic marine to not care about field of view because he’s probably looking at a holographic, visually enhanced display from visual detectors. That’s right, in the future they’ll use Oculus Rift :) Also, I dislike the exposed piping around the throat of 4. It looks vulnerable.

These are fantastic; since I think they’re so cool I feel like being picky, so here are my complaints:

-I hope those green running lights on the suit turn off during combat. You don’t want to give people a lit-up target to shoot at.

-He’s posing with his weapons, I know, but for pete’s sake a well-trained marine should not have his finger on the trigger unless he’s about to fire.

-Why are there lit visual displays on the side of the weapon? Again, this illuminates you as a target, and wouldn’t it make more sense to put them on the back so the user can see them?

And last, this is an idea the picture inspires, not a complaint: It would be really cool to see marines carrying their rifles on a sling, then dropping them and quickly drawing their pistols for close range, or even drawing and firing the pistol with the off-hand, holding the rifle ready with the other, in intense situations. Most fps games with which I’m familiar don’t do much with weapon switching on AI in the first place, and tend to make weapon-switching involve a rifle suddenly disappearing or teleporting from your hands to your back — seeing use of multiple weapons correctly animated would be great.

105. Man those helmets look great! Awesome work Rob!

- Helmets 1 and 2 look like they have really limtied vision. 3 and 4 and great.

- someone on your art team must have a tube fetish. So many tubes on those suits.. I count 9. You’d think you want to protect all those vital tubes behind armor.

Gotta say, I’m a fan of helmet no. 3. And I like everything about the marine, except for the heads up display on his glasses. It would obscure his entire line of sight. That said, the rest of it looks fantastic.

Love them all!!! 1-2 for flight helmet and 3-4 for fps combat?

114. Avatar of Bergmeister Bergmeister says:

if i had to choose… 3, but i would prefer an old design like the helmets in the old Wing Commander parts

115. Avatar of Ghostwork Ghostwork says:

3 and 4 remind me too much of Halo. /shiver

Too generic.

2 is the most unique. Looks like some kind of camera in the center of the face mask. FOV could be adjusted by the wearer on the fly. If the helmet had a similar camera in the back, a marine could quickly check a nearly 360 degree panoramic view of his surroundings.

116. Avatar of affa affa says:

Seems 1 & 2 will limit peripheral vision a little too much. 3 is good and 4 is marginal. apart from that its awesome with a capital F.

117. Avatar of Myztkl-Kev Myztkl-Kev says:

sweet helmits. i hope we can customize paint schemes or logos on them at some point in SC life.

118. Honestly looks like he’s straight out of OCS with a big chip on his shoulders and something to prove. No dirt, no ware and tear on the battle suit, very green, very Hollywood!

There looks to be an over abundance / over compensation to make him look bulky. If combats on a ship or somewhere with tight enclosures wouldn’t you want freedom of movement to be a high priority?

Also the cords etc between the legs is impractical, ever tried running a few Ks with something tied on the inside of your thigh? You’d be bloody from the rubbing of it against your inner thigh.

What’s wrong with chest armor, helmet and a backpack. Maybe add knee and elbow pads if your a bit soft and don’t want to graze you knees :) .

Also whats with dark sunglasses in space, isn’t it dark enough! You can be the first thing that i’d be doing if someone boarded my ship is turning off the lights and going putting on NVGs.

So what do I like, well the colour is probably good against the night sky for camouflage. Why not make the uniforms change colour to match surroundings to make it harder to see them? If they can’t see you they can’t shoot you. The handgun looks like a nice model, pity can’t see more of the rifle. Finally the helmets, they look pretty good too, they should have a decent HUD and provide minimal life support as well.

Enough ranting. Feel free to disagree.

Knights out.

That is such a good looking marine. If we get this in the character creator, WE WILL WE WILL ROCK YOU!!

120. Avatar of Reade Reade says:

Well like modern day, you need to make a decision about flexibility and armour. Of course with space and other hostile environs you need a suit capable of handling them as well as to isolate sections that have been punctured.

So a certain amount of bulkiness would be expected. Albeit the amount of stuff on his abdomen would appear to prevent him from bending there. Something important as most soldiers look to get behind cover or get to the floor. Being unable to have much flexibility there, greatly reduces their ability to take those actions. Including getting up again.

Sensors, lights and other visual aids would be needed as well. Perhaps a modular configuration allowing mission specific attachments. Considering current tech and what could be down in the near future, the suite could easily have an exoskeleton to increase muscle actions and looks like it might have one.

The helmets 1 & 2 look more like an insect in appearance, with limited visuals.
3 & 4 looks better – I like 3′s more simplistic look while 4 shows a good placement of lights for dark locations; especially in cases of close interaction to panels and such.

Of course being the future there would be materials with strengths and characteristics we would be only be able to guess at. It comes down as to what we would believe in being presented with as feasible.

121. Avatar of Sethanus Sethanus says:

I occurs to me that the glass in the helmet could be a hud, I mean in real life there are screens that roll up, I don’t think it would be much of a stretch to have those screens be transparent when the marrine needs it like that.

Anyway back to the point I was making, I would like to see the helmet glass be a hud for the marrine, and for the sensors on the helmet to augment what he was seeing through the class.

Base line helmet, has thermal and low light sensors, and you see that in the glass as you look arround.

The next level of helmet has what the base line helmet has but with a rifle appiture showing where you gun is aiming, so you can shoot from the hip if you want.

The next lvl has all of the above, but includes a frequency sensor, so you can see when someone down range is transmitting. 2 or more marrines in a firefight can triangulate and enemy this way.

And so on and so forth.

This would probably be really cool for people playing with the Oculas Rift.

As a US Marine I must insist the Eagle Globe and Anchor be included! Marines would never let their heritage dilute over time. The Esprit De Corps is who and what we are without that they might as well be soldiers. I am almost certain the US Marines will love to have their Corps Portrayed in the future. James Forestall said the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima signified that there would be a Marine Corps for another 500 years. Perhaps it will be thousands of years.

• Avatar of Valaska Valaska says:

The united states was abolished and destroyed, the UEE formed afterwards, the marines as you know it aren’t these marines so its an entirely new military.

• Avatar of Valaska Valaska says:

Destroyed was the wrong word lol, they were all folded into one giant ass military and government. To me it would be a little… Jackassery, if one serving military established a heraldry for all others instead of making a new one to fit all adjoining members.

• Avatar of VonLowe VonLowe says:

The Royal Marines were the founders on Modern Marine Corps. They also use the Globe and Anchor. And EVERY Marine unit Spanish, British, American, Russian…Use the Globe and Anchor or some derivative there of. Actually the Russians I saw last wore oars but you get the point. Heritage plain and simple. So we form a new Marine Corps out of all the Nations forces. Who would they model them after? Royal and US Marines my friend. That is not Jackassery its fact.

This is meh. His gear pretty much looks like what we have today.
“Master Chief style” body armour is soon a reality. In 900 years I think it would be standard and every merc, regardless of income, would have one.

I know the designers are trying to keep it fun and cool, but so far I’m not that impressed by the technology I’m seeing.

• Avatar of Moriquende Moriquende says:

Oh dear. I just realized that the pistol is almost an exact model of a WE Black Dragon 7″, an airsoft pistol.

That was the best you could come up with?

BTW, a soldier would know to keep his finger off the trigger.

• Avatar of Valaska Valaska says:

There’s only so many glowing lights you can attach to something to make it look sci-fi. In 900 years no one can say where we’ll be, because technology is a fluid thing, we tend to flop back and forth between breatkthroughs and advancements, to set backs. Even now we have cheap, viable alternatives to so much military gear that isn’t put into use.

Besides, this isn’t unreal tournament or Global Agenda I assume, this tech on him could be very advanced but just look rooted in realism. And if you say the starships don’t impress you, or the TERA concepts then there’s just no pleasing you, go design your own Sci-Fi star wars or whatever the hell.
