Unlocked: Odin System

We announced the star system stretch goals only a few hours ago and it’s already time to show you the first one! Congratulations on $3.1 million, pilots! Here’s what you’ve added to the map:

Odin System

Ownership: United Earth Empire
Planets: 4
Planetary Rotation: Osiris II 487 SED (Standard Earth Day)
Imports: Food, Medical Supplies
Exports: None
Black Market: Weapons, Gemstones
UEE Strategic Value Rank: Grey

Description: Odin is one of the oldest star systems visited by man. Fifty thousand years ago, it was a vibrant solar system remarkably similar to Earth or Terra. Since that time, Odin’s star has degenerated into a white dwarf, rendering its planets icy nightmare worlds.

Odin II is within the system’s minuscule green band and is home to a variety of temporary UEE “deep freeze” expeditions, with the lack of surviving vegetation making it an ideal site for a weapons laboratory. Smugglers occasionally choose to call the system home, but their stays are infrequent… Odin is too cold even for pirates and trained killers.

Odin II’s moon, Vili, is frequently used as a corporate weapons testing range. As a result, something of a black market for weapons technology has grown up in the region: much of it is junk, but pilots have reported finding occasional deals on discarded top-of-the-line military-grade surplus.

There is a thick asteroid belt close in, likely the remnants of a planet which did not survive the star’s failure. The UEE formally bans mining in the system, although little effort is paid to enforcing this edict. The field is largely uninteresting, but intrepid miners have been known to hit on substantive caches of gemstones, making their trips worthwhile.

Odin IV is a gas giant and home to a UEE-sponsored hydrogen rendering station and fuel depot. Fuel is remarkably cheap here for this part of the galaxy, although accommodations are notoriously spartan.

Known jumps to Baker, Helios and Osiris.

Next up, at $3.2 million: “Seven planets exist in this system.  Unfortunately, the star is about to go supernova so no one has claimed it.  A great place to have clandestine meetings.”

    Uh…
    Odin System
Odin II is within the system’s minuscule green band
but the break down says: *Osiris* II 487 SED (Standard Earth Day)

    I think I’ve spotted a typo.
Now a question the peak at the next one (Unfortunately, the star is about to go supernova) brought to mind. Is it eminent enough to occur within the game?

  14. Avatar of Anchre Anchre says:

50 thousand years is too short a timescale to go from main-sequence star to white dwarf :(

  15. Avatar of jlpicard2 jlpicard2 says:

Wouldn’t it take billions of years for a star to become a white dwarf, passing through the red giant phase first?

  16. Avatar of Zabojnik Zabojnik says:

I knew people would complain about 50.000 years being too short a timescale. :D It’s not a big deal and I’m sure that fiction, as everything else, is work in progress.

  17. Avatar of Hood Hood says:

So just how important is the Grey UEE Strategic Value Rank? (Probaby not high)
Good update… may want to corect the 50.000 years

  18. Avatar of Korai Korai says:

White Dwarf, 50k is too short apparently by a Long way – maybe some strange alien intervention…?

    Mini updates, love em
4mil is going to seem to get here so Fast :)

    • Avatar of Vhan Vhan says:

Think that 50k years is not the stars life, but when people first got & started booming in that system?

      • Avatar of ijuin ijuin says:

It’s only the 30th century in the game, so some other races would have had to be using it for the other 49 thousand years.

As far as stellar evolution goes, it would be a lot more plausible if the line read “fifty million” instead of “fifty thousand”–i.e. the place was teeming with life until shortly after the dinosaurs died out on Earth.

  19. its a gamwe maybe it went to white dwarf cause its a Hobbit or LOTR fan.

I’d like to see the threat of radiation thrown off from the sun threatening said clandestine meetings. I guess that I just like the idea of environmental threats to players such as the asteroids, ion storms and solar flares seen in the game FTL.

Isn’t this scene from the original RSI teaser trailer? Nice looking system though!

    Anahan,
“wish”, there were some giving guys that will turn a blind eye, and donate a few mil, before the deadline date, as the interest is high in my opinion…4 eg the Odin System, all of us, star citizen’s worked so hard getting here, thank you, and thanks for the opertunity, to Chris Roberts, and all at RSI.

  28. Avatar of Aidle Mohd Aidle Mohd says:

Awesome system, mostly are imports runs like food/medical supplies to the habitats, but Odin II’s moon, Vili and thick asteroid belt close is nice place to explore and tract. You will never know what u will find. Could be a fortunes or just the end of your story. Cant wait how appealing the MISC Freelancer will be….

  31. Avatar of Cinder Cinder says:

Why does/would the UEE ban mining in this system?

    • Avatar of Breyyne Breyyne says:

Probably has something to do with the UEE weapons faculty. I would Imagine that the military doesn’t want to deal with miners when they are test firing weapons at such a target abundant belt.

    • I don’t know why they would ban mining in that system. But i’m guessing or read this
grey area – an intermediate area; a topic that is not clearly one thing or the other
      gray area
area – a subject of study; “it was his area of specialization”; “areas of interest include…”
or gray area a place where people have a lot of problems and are not shore how to deal with it

  32. Avatar of Breyyne Breyyne says:

Are the other 40 systems listed anywhere at the moment. Even brief descriptions like this one would be nice. It would give us a chance to ‘grow’ into the universe that we all will be playing in.

  33. Avatar of Darksword Darksword says:

40 + systems .. release information on 1 system every 2 weeks that should help last the next 2 years. lol

  36. Avatar of Burneyx Burneyx says:

Odin seems to be an almost ‘useless’ sector, an hard hit against honest and lawfull Citizens of the Empire.
Piracy and Smuggling should happen in the outer rim, not in lawfull Empire area.

  37. Avatar of CCC_Dober CCC_Dober says:

That system description pretty much screams ‘top secret’ and ‘death-trap’ to me. I need to get those coordinates asap ^^

  42. Avatar of Daworox Daworox says:

Great news, can’t wait for the upcoming news & updates ;)

Although there might be some info on the initial 40 star systems, no?

  43. The Universe is full of mysterious and un-explainable stuff, perhaps cetain stars can go supernova without passing through all the usual phases…..

though i like the whole idea of a secret super weapon test on the star…..

hell imagine its a weapon fitted to carriers or capitol ships used for total genocide, destroying a solar system.

Squadron 42, you’ve got your work cut out, it seems.

    oh the possabilities….O_O

  44. Avatar of devi1sdoz3n devi1sdoz3n says:

Shouldn’t planet names have lowercase letters instead of roman numerals?
Right now the convention in astronomy is that the first discovered planet gets the designation ‘b’ (as in Odin b), and later planets are given subsequent letters.
The reason that they don’t use numbers in order of distance from the star is that more planets might be discovered at a later date, and that would mess things up.

    • Avatar of Lancer Lancer says:

But that is because they have to try and find it from here looking into the far distance. As the humans in the SC universe already live there, they know the exact numbers of planets. There is no planet not yet discovered in Odin. So I think its okay to give them roman numerals.

      • Avatar of devi1sdoz3n devi1sdoz3n says:

I know, and it’s a small matter anyway that will have practically no effect on the game whatsoever, but why not do it the right way if it doesn’t cost you anything? Of course it’s easy to find justification for a thing like this, but it’s one of those things that almost every sci-fi gets wrong in the *same way*. First instance I remember is Altair IV from the Forbidden Planet. If you are changing reality do it in an original way then. I find stories that keep to reality as much as possible more convincing (and immersive if you will).
But as I said, this is such a small thing that you shouldn’t pay much attention to these comments of mine. Just a pet peeve.

  45. @devildozn3, Yeah i agree, though the system is pretty new/recent….

since with kepler and other methods they’re discovering planets by the truck-loads,

though realism is good, i prefer they shape this universe a little different from our own. having the role play fantasy element different from our own is what would keep me in here for years to come.

but i also agree to keep enough of the real physical world to enhance immersion.

now imagine as squadron pilots to pull off a Star Burst manouvre….ala star trek cadette style…..wouldn’tthat be awesom :D

  46. Avatar of Pororoca Pororoca says:

Odin IV, that seems a nice place for Spartan-like pilots to refuel :)

  47. Avatar of Cùran Cùran says:

Awesome! I’m really keen to learn about the next star system.

Lucily it’s not that far away anymore (or: I thaught my little script to track the star system goals too *g*).

  48. Avatar of Beachlight Beachlight says:

Cool star system, if we get ship computer voice systems I would like James Earl Jones to be the voice actor who could tell me when jumping in, “You have entered the Odin System”.
Or the Holly male computer from Red Dwarf, “alright dudes, I think this is the Odin system”.
Would be a nice little extra for space traveling to star systems.

  49. Avatar of Aggiekev Aggiekev says:

I notice the system has 4 planets, yet only 1 planet’s stats are listed. While in the description more than 1 planet is mentioned. I think they overlooked some essential detail.

  50. Avatar of Rebuc Rebuc says:

Awesome, just awesome – can’t wait to see more :)

  51. amazing details, landing on Odin II will be awesome.
