We announced the star system stretch goals only a few hours ago and it’s already time to show you the first one! Congratulations on $3.1 million, pilots! Here’s what you’ve added to the map:
Odin System
Ownership: United Earth Empire
Planets: 4
Planetary Rotation: Osiris II 487 SED (Standard Earth Day)
Imports: Food, Medical Supplies
Exports: None
Black Market: Weapons, Gemstones
UEE Strategic Value Rank: Grey
Description: Odin is one of the oldest star systems visited by man. Fifty thousand years ago, it was a vibrant solar system remarkably similar to Earth or Terra. Since that time, Odin’s star has degenerated into a white dwarf, rendering its planets icy nightmare worlds.
Odin II is within the system’s minuscule green band and is home to a variety of temporary UEE “deep freeze” expeditions, with the lack of surviving vegetation making it an ideal site for a weapons laboratory. Smugglers occasionally choose to call the system home, but their stays are infrequent… Odin is too cold even for pirates and trained killers.
Odin II’s moon, Vili, is frequently used as a corporate weapons testing range. As a result, something of a black market for weapons technology has grown up in the region: much of it is junk, but pilots have reported finding occasional deals on discarded top-of-the-line military-grade surplus.
There is a thick asteroid belt close in, likely the remnants of a planet which did not survive the star’s failure. The UEE formally bans mining in the system, although little effort is paid to enforcing this edict. The field is largely uninteresting, but intrepid miners have been known to hit on substantive caches of gemstones, making their trips worthwhile.
Odin IV is a gas giant and home to a UEE-sponsored hydrogen rendering station and fuel depot. Fuel is remarkably cheap here for this part of the galaxy, although accommodations are notoriously spartan.
Known jumps to Baker, Helios and Osiris.
Next up, at $3.2 million: “Seven planets exist in this system. Unfortunately, the star is about to go supernova so no one has claimed it. A great place to have clandestine meetings.”

Great!!!!!!
Interesting!
Very tasty so good.
Wow, cool! It’s very nice having an update so soon! $4M here we come!
very, VERY neat! awesome update!
lol cant wait to see the next system
thx for the update like the small peaks from the smaller goals
OH YEAH…A new system.Next system, here we go.
Very nice ! I really like the “Strategic value” info, this will had incentives when protecting or marketing in systems
what a chilling new development…:}
How exactly does the UEE strategic ranking system work?
More, MORE, MOAR!
great! i love it!
This is awesome cant wait for the next one!
41st system! Awesome. Um, so what about the previous 40?
hope there is a hidden base in that asteroid belt!
Sudden get into Pirates base playground during explorations, worse still guns and missiles platforms on asteroids…
Thanks for this update! I hope this kind of info is included in the ship’s nav computer! I’d love to sit in my ship and browse through systems for possible exploration.
Now that’s a really great idea!
Or better yet, our computers start out blank and as we explore, visit markets and talk to NPCs/hear rumors it’s updated into our systems summary!
these little updates just make me punch the screen with wads of cash, so we can get the next one lol
Uh…
Odin System
Odin II is within the system’s minuscule green band
but the break down says: *Osiris* II 487 SED (Standard Earth Day)
I think I’ve spotted a typo.
Now a question the peak at the next one (Unfortunately, the star is about to go supernova) brought to mind. Is it eminent enough to occur within the game?
Looks like just typo for me, because there’s jump drive connection between odin system and osiris system. So maybe we can wait that next system will be osiris?
50 thousand years is too short a timescale to go from main-sequence star to white dwarf
I agree, but not for a civilization who didn’t start out the same time the star existed. I think this explanation is from when man started occupying the star system.
Wouldn’t it take billions of years for a star to become a white dwarf, passing through the red giant phase first?
http://scienceblogs.com/startswithabang/2012/10/01/the-lives-and-deaths-of-sun-like-stars/
What if an alien race had a weapons test? And tested it on the star? This could be a perfectly reasonable explanation, if the aliens were high-tech enough. And 50,000 years is quite enough time for a race to go extinct.
KM
The universe takes shape. I now know where to take the weapons I take of all those puny pirates.
why is this here? I did not click reply.
Maybe it was a very small star? Our sun is medium size I think…so maybe smaller suns burn quicker?
Other way around. Big stars burn bright and fast. Small stars burn dim but for a long time.
Red dwarfs (small low mass stars) can last hundreds of billions of years, and are the most numerous of stars. They burn low (they are dim) and slow.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dwarf
sadly for this universe right before all lights go out, we will be populated by red dwarfs and neutron stars, and some black holes who will shine eventually when they swallow some dead star mass, passing their event horizon, sadly we will have to look after a way out of this universe or perish in the cold dark void…hmm great plot for a end game setup way into the future of star citizen
Then maybe it was a really big star!
I knew people would complain about 50.000 years being too short a timescale.
It’s not a big deal and I’m sure that fiction, as everything else, is work in progress.
So just how important is the Grey UEE Strategic Value Rank? (Probaby not high)
Good update… may want to corect the 50.000 years
… and you may want to tell us somesting about the previus 40 star systems.
Why ruin the fun of learning during in-game activities?
ben mentioned it was largely meaningless
White Dwarf, 50k is too short apparently by a Long way – maybe some strange alien intervention…?
Mini updates, love em
4mil is going to seem to get here so Fast
Think that 50k years is not the stars life, but when people first got & started booming in that system?
It’s only the 30th century in the game, so some other races would have had to be using it for the other 49 thousand years.
As far as stellar evolution goes, it would be a lot more plausible if the line read “fifty million” instead of “fifty thousand”–i.e. the place was teeming with life until shortly after the dinosaurs died out on Earth.
its a gamwe maybe it went to white dwarf cause its a Hobbit or LOTR fan.
Next up, at $3.2 million: “Seven planets exist in this system. Unfortunately, the star is about to go supernova so no one has claimed it. A great place to have clandestine meetings.”
I’d like to see the threat of radiation thrown off from the sun threatening said clandestine meetings. I guess that I just like the idea of environmental threats to players such as the asteroids, ion storms and solar flares seen in the game FTL.
Isn’t this scene from the original RSI teaser trailer? Nice looking system though!
Way to go team and Backers, this is awsome. Now we have something to really aim for and to talk about.
Sweet
Hmmm I wonder will there be environmental shield damage/drain?
Freelancer did, so it would be no surprise if Star Citizen will have something similar too.
I remember going to the one system in Freelancer with a black hole in it, and trying to fly into the black hole. The rate of hull damage increased so much that I ran through a full supply of repair nanobots before I could get close to it even at maximum speed.
That makes sense, since a black hole destroys everything through spaghettification long before you reach the actual singularity.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaghettification
I remember the neutron star system (minefield and astroid belt) that’s “collidable” with only one of the original craft due to hull dedigration, but black hole? I think it’s time to reinstall Freelancer and do some more exploration.
more good news pls
There’s a black market?
Your tonton will freeze before the first marker! Give me creamciclces (orange)!
These guys will call you out on the science… just sayin.
Nice!
Anahan,
“wish”, there were some giving guys that will turn a blind eye, and donate a few mil, before the deadline date, as the interest is high in my opinion…4 eg the Odin System, all of us, star citizen’s worked so hard getting here, thank you, and thanks for the opertunity, to Chris Roberts, and all at RSI.
Awesome system, mostly are imports runs like food/medical supplies to the habitats, but Odin II’s moon, Vili and thick asteroid belt close is nice place to explore and tract. You will never know what u will find. Could be a fortunes or just the end of your story. Cant wait how appealing the MISC Freelancer will be….
“Odin is one of the oldest star systems visited by man.”
Have women since been allowed to visit? Maybe some enterprising female pilot could be the first one!
Very very cool! Hope we get info this detailed and specific on all the star systems.
Why does/would the UEE ban mining in this system?
Probably has something to do with the UEE weapons faculty. I would Imagine that the military doesn’t want to deal with miners when they are test firing weapons at such a target abundant belt.
I don’t know why they would ban mining in that system. But i’m guessing or read this
grey area – an intermediate area; a topic that is not clearly one thing or the other
gray area
area – a subject of study; “it was his area of specialization”; “areas of interest include…”
or gray area a place where people have a lot of problems and are not shore how to deal with it
I’m not shore to be honest but its UEE Strategic Value Rank: is Grey
so hence a grey area
Are the other 40 systems listed anywhere at the moment. Even brief descriptions like this one would be nice. It would give us a chance to ‘grow’ into the universe that we all will be playing in.
40 + systems .. release information on 1 system every 2 weeks that should help last the next 2 years. lol
I want to see supernova:D
Awesome… Now where did I park my “Lancer”
Odin seems to be an almost ‘useless’ sector, an hard hit against honest and lawfull Citizens of the Empire.
Piracy and Smuggling should happen in the outer rim, not in lawfull Empire area.
That system description pretty much screams ‘top secret’ and ‘death-trap’ to me. I need to get those coordinates asap ^^
Militarycadets come here to hone thire skills as pirat-busters.
excellent stuff, loving it
)
Reminds me of Hoth. Should start trading with eau d’tauntaun.
Connects to three other startsystems.. get´s interesting
Starsystems… Ups
Great news, can’t wait for the upcoming news & updates
Although there might be some info on the initial 40 star systems, no?
The Universe is full of mysterious and un-explainable stuff, perhaps cetain stars can go supernova without passing through all the usual phases…..
though i like the whole idea of a secret super weapon test on the star…..
hell imagine its a weapon fitted to carriers or capitol ships used for total genocide, destroying a solar system.
Squadron 42, you’ve got your work cut out, it seems.
oh the possabilities….O_O
Shouldn’t planet names have lowercase letters instead of roman numerals?
Right now the convention in astronomy is that the first discovered planet gets the designation ‘b’ (as in Odin b), and later planets are given subsequent letters.
The reason that they don’t use numbers in order of distance from the star is that more planets might be discovered at a later date, and that would mess things up.
But that is because they have to try and find it from here looking into the far distance. As the humans in the SC universe already live there, they know the exact numbers of planets. There is no planet not yet discovered in Odin. So I think its okay to give them roman numerals.
I know, and it’s a small matter anyway that will have practically no effect on the game whatsoever, but why not do it the right way if it doesn’t cost you anything? Of course it’s easy to find justification for a thing like this, but it’s one of those things that almost every sci-fi gets wrong in the *same way*. First instance I remember is Altair IV from the Forbidden Planet. If you are changing reality do it in an original way then. I find stories that keep to reality as much as possible more convincing (and immersive if you will).
But as I said, this is such a small thing that you shouldn’t pay much attention to these comments of mine. Just a pet peeve.
@devildozn3, Yeah i agree, though the system is pretty new/recent….
since with kepler and other methods they’re discovering planets by the truck-loads,
though realism is good, i prefer they shape this universe a little different from our own. having the role play fantasy element different from our own is what would keep me in here for years to come.
but i also agree to keep enough of the real physical world to enhance immersion.
now imagine as squadron pilots to pull off a Star Burst manouvre….ala star trek cadette style…..wouldn’tthat be awesom
Odin IV, that seems a nice place for Spartan-like pilots to refuel
Awesome! I’m really keen to learn about the next star system.
Lucily it’s not that far away anymore (or: I thaught my little script to track the star system goals too *g*).
Cool star system, if we get ship computer voice systems I would like James Earl Jones to be the voice actor who could tell me when jumping in, “You have entered the Odin System”.
Or the Holly male computer from Red Dwarf, “alright dudes, I think this is the Odin system”.
Would be a nice little extra for space traveling to star systems.
Norman Lovett (male Holly) would be available, and a lot cheaper than James Earl Jones.
http://www.normanlovett.co.uk/contact.htm
I notice the system has 4 planets, yet only 1 planet’s stats are listed. While in the description more than 1 planet is mentioned. I think they overlooked some essential detail.
I believe that is because it is the only one in that systems green belt with humans on it. The only interesting one perhaps.
Awesome, just awesome – can’t wait to see more
amazing details, landing on Odin II will be awesome.
HELL YEAH!!!! STILL ALIVE AND KICKIN! ….I LLLove IT!
Next system is close to going supernova? Oh boy! I hope it goes supernova randomly while people are flying around in the system, well not without some warning. HA
$3,198,492 already! Supernova, here we come!
