The expression takes up the title of a famous comedy film of 1966 shot by Mario Monicelli: L’armata Brancaleone. The film, set in italy in the eleventh century, tells the adventures, indeed rather grotesque, of a patchwork and small army of brigands led by a noble knight, now fallen into disgrace, Brancaleone da Norcia, whose purpose is to take possession of a fiefdom in Puglia.
